Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few parts of a building work harder than its envelope (also known as its facade). The envelope is the part of the building most visible from the outside--so it should be visually appealing--but it can also have the biggest effect on the well-being and safety of its occupants--so the envelope should be help heat and cool the building, allow light into it, and provide necessary structure. Too often, a building's envelope is more aesthetically striking than functional, or vice versa. A great building envelope, though, architecturally integrates all of its elements.

Book excerpt: Performance-Based Building Design This third book in a series of three dealing with building physics and its application, looks to the impact a performance requirements linked approach has on building design and construction. It starts with a resumption of what’s expected from buildings, followed by discussing a range of materials needed to guarantee a correct heat, air, moisture response. Then, looked is to preparing the building site, the excavations needed, the foundations, the below-grade parts and spaces, the structural systems commonly used, the floors, different types of outer walls, different types of roof assemblies, inside walls, the glazing, windows, outer doors, glass façades, bal-conies, all kind of shafts, chimneys, stairs, timber-frame construction, wall, floor and ceiling finishes. Each time again, not only the heat, air, moisture related metrics but also structural integrity, durability, fire safety, acoustics, maintenance, sustainability and buildability are dis- cussed. The whole ends with looking to the risks deficiencies may cause. For this new edition, all chapters have been critically reviewed, actualized and gifted with additional figures where needed, so incorporating the experiences gained from 38 years of teaching to architectural and building engineering students, from 36 years of research, and from 53 years of practice, curing damage cases due to failing performance.
Book Synopsis Glass & Interactive Building Envelopes by : Michel Crisinel
Download or read book Glass & Interactive Building Envelopes written by Michel Crisinel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of tomorrow's towns and cities will be based on new social, economic and technological ideals focused on improving the quality of life. To attain this objective, architects and engineers of today must improve the quality of buildings and establish new principles of building conception. The quality of interior space and the impact of a building on its surroundings depends strongly on the physical interface that separates the outer environment from the inner building space. The conception and realisation of this interface (the envelope) are, therefore, of prime importance.
Book Synopsis Applied Building Physics by : Hugo S. L. Hens
Download or read book Applied Building Physics written by Hugo S. L. Hens and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book AM Envelope written by Holger Strauss and published by TU Delft. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows the potential of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for the development of building envelopes: AM will change the way of designing facades, how we engineer and produce them. To achieve today’s demands from those future envelopes, we have to find new solutions. The term ‘AM Envelope’ (Additive Manufacturing Envelope) describes the transfer of this technology to the building envelope. Additive Fabrication is a building block that aids in developing the building envelope from a mere space enclosure to a dynamic building envelope. AM offers the opportunity to manufacture facades ‘just in time’. It is no longer necessary to store or produce large numbers of parts in advance. Initial investment for tooling can be avoided, as design improvements can be realized within the dataset of the AM part. AM is based on ‘tool-less’ production, all parts can be further developed with every new generation. The basic principle of AM opens a fascinating new world of engineering, no matter what applications can be found: to ‘design for function’ rather to ‘design for production’ turns our way of engineering of the last century upside down. A collection of AM applications therefore offers the outlook to our (built) future in combination with the acquired knowledge.

Book Synopsis Building Physics - Heat, Air and Moisture by : Hugo S. L. Hens
Download or read book Building Physics - Heat, Air and Moisture written by Hugo S. L. Hens and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad experiences with construction quality, the energy crises of 1973 and 1979, complaints about "sick buildings", thermal, acoustical, visual and olfactory discomfort, the need for good air quality, the move towards energy efficiency, decarbonization and sustainability ? all these have accelerated the development of a discipline that, for a long time, was hardly more than an academic exercise: building physics. The discipline embraces domains such as heat and mass transfer, building acoustics, lighting, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency, and, in some countries, fire safety. Through the application of physical knowledge and its combination with information coming from other disciplines, building physics helps to under-stand the physical phenomena governing building parts, building envelope, whole building and built environment performance ? called urban physics. Today, building physics has be-come a key player on the road to highly performing new buildings and renovations. This book deals with heat, air and moisture transport in building parts or assemblies and whole buildings with emphasis on the building engineering applications. Compared to the third edition, this fourth edition has been expanded in chapter 1 to include the physical determination of the thermal conductivity of materials, together with an in-depth discussion of all the effects of thicker insulation layers. In chapter 2, additional information has been added on wind pressure and the evaluation of condensation inside the building com-ponents, while a new chapter 4 on material properties has been included. The whole book, including the figures, has been revised and restructured where necessary.
Book Synopsis Performance Based Building Design 2 by : Hugo S. L. Hens
Download or read book Performance Based Building Design 2 written by Hugo S. L. Hens and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like building physics, performance based building design was hardly an issue before the energy crises of the 1970ies. With the need to upgrade energy efficiency, the interest in overall building performance grew. The term "performance" encompasses all building-related physical properties and qualities that are predictable during the design stage and controllable during and after construction. The term "predictable" demands calculation tools and physical models that allow evaluating a design, whereas "controllable" presumes the existence of measuring methods available on site. The basis for a system of performance arrays are the functional demands, the needs for accessibility, safety, well-being, durability, energy efficiency and sustainability and the requirements imposed by the usage of a building. In continuation of Vol. 1 this second volume discusses light-weight construction with wooden and metal elements, roofing systems, facades, and ends with finishes and the overall risk analysis. Most chapters build on a same scheme: overview, overall performance evaluation, design and construction. The work is absolutely recommended to undergraduates and graduates in architectural and building engineering, though also building engineers, who want to refresh their knowledge, may benefit. The level of discussion assumes the reader has a sound knowledge of building physics, along with a background in structural engineering, building materials and building construction. Where and when needed, input and literature from over the world was used, reason why each chapter ends listing references and literature.
Book Synopsis Eco-Architecture V by : C.A. Brebbia
Download or read book Eco-Architecture V written by C.A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the fifth International Conference on Harmonisation between Architecture and Nature (Eco-Architecture 2014). Eco-Architecture implies a new approach to the design process intended to harmonise its products with nature. This involves ideas such as minimum use of energy at each stage of the building process, taking into account the amount required during the extraction and transportation of materials, their fabrication, assembly, building erection, maintenance and eventual future recycling. Another important issue is the adaptation of the architectural design to the natural environment, learning from nature and long time honoured samples of traditional constructions. The papers in this book deal with topics such as building technologies, design by passive systems, design with nature, cultural sensitivity, life cycle assessment, resources and rehabilitation and many others. Also included are case studies from many different places around the world. Eco-Architecture by definition is a highly multi-disciplinary subject. Eco-Architecture V: Harmonisation between Architecture and Nature will therefore be of interest to, in addition to architects, many other professionals, including engineers, planners, physical scientists, sociologists and economists. Topics covered include: Design with nature; Energy efficiency; Building technologies; Ecological impacts of materials; Bioclimatic design; Water quality; Green facades; Ecological and cultural sensitivity; Education and training; Case studies; Design by passive systems; Adapted reuse; Life cycle assessment and durability; Transformative design; Sustainability indices in architecture.
