Book excerpt: Hartwell Glass left his home in Campbell County in 1889 and rode over the mountains to the new town of Buena Vista in Rockbridge County. Young, 25 years old and single, Hartwell kissed his mother and sister Olivia goodbye, embraced his father, and three older brothers and looked back at the large farm one more time. He had kept up with the exciting news of the boom taking place. Each account in his weekly newspaper built up his desire to see the boom himself. Was there a bright future awaiting him there? His entry into the new town led him into the area known as Green Forest. This is where the town got its start, thanks to Mr. Moomaw, and Green Forest was still the center of business with several stores, a large tannery, and a saddle factory already in operation. It was too late for Hartwell to buy stock in Buena Vista. All the stock had been subscribed. It was all gone after only ten days on the market in February, 1889. His only hope was to enter the mad rush to buy some lots, or even just one lot. Real estate agents were all over the place, selling, buying, and reselling building lots. Some were making huge profits. -- Pg. [1].

Download or read book BUENAVISTA written by Francisco C. Aspuria and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buenavista--an agricultural place transformed into a congested semi suburbanite setting because of progress. The book recalls the struggles of the poor but resilient early Kamarinians, mostly landless but hardworking peasants who toiled the land of the well-to-do landowners just to exist meagerly. This is the story of the rural people, derogatorily referred to as "mga taga bundok" (the mountain people). They worked hard not to prove their worth but to survive. They survived because they were resilient; they endured because they were God-fearing people. They are the people of the barrio, and they have nothing to be ashamed of. They are proud of who they are and what they are.
