Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vast expanse of the cosmos, where stars twinkle like distant dreams and galaxies stretch beyond imagination, lies the uncharted territory of human potential. This book, "Builders of the Space: Dyson Spheres and Megastructures," embarks on a journey through the realm of space engineering, where the boundaries of human knowledge and ingenuity meet the limitless possibilities of the cosmos. As we stand on the precipice of a new era of space exploration, the construction of megastructures in the far reaches of the universe has emerged as a beacon of human achievement. From the theoretical wonders of Dyson Spheres to the intricacies of interstellar highways, this book delves into the remarkable, the audacious, and the unprecedented. The quest to understand and harness the cosmos has been a defining characteristic of our species. Throughout history, we have looked to the stars with a sense of wonder and curiosity, seeking to fathom the mysteries of the universe. Now, in an age where technology and imagination converge, we are on the verge of realizing feats that were once the stuff of science fiction. "Builders of the Space" is not merely a book; it is a portal to a future where humans boldly venture beyond our pale blue dot, constructing wonders that defy the limits of our terrestrial existence. It is a testament to the brilliance of scientists, engineers, and visionaries who dare to dream of a universe transformed by human endeavor. Within these pages, you will encounter the disciplines that form the foundation of space engineering, the materials that withstand the harshness of space, and the challenges that accompany the construction of megastructures. You will explore the theoretical realms of Dyson Spheres and Matrioshka Brains, the practicalities of space highways, and the complexities of Mars colonies. And woven through it all is the thread of human ethics, responsibility, and the profound impact of our actions in the cosmos. "Builders of the Space" invites you to join us on this voyage into the unknown, to peer into the future of space exploration, and to envision a universe where the boundaries of our potential are limited only by the scope of our imagination. As you turn the pages of this book, may you find inspiration in the indomitable spirit of those who dare to build the cosmos, and may you be reminded that the universe is not just our destination—it is our destiny. The cosmos beckons, and we, the builders of the universe, answer the call. Büşra Arslan Haktanıyan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past five decades have witnessed often fierce international rivalry in space, but also surprising military restraint. Now, with an increasing number of countries capable of harming U.S. space assets, experts and officials have renewed a long-standing debate over the best route to space security. Some argue that space defenses will be needed to protect critical military and civilian satellites. Others argue that space should be a "sanctuary" from deployed weapons and military conflict, particularly given the worsening threat posed by orbital space debris. Moltz puts this debate into historical context by explaining the main trends in military space developments since Sputnik, their underlying causes, and the factors that are likely to influence their future course. This new edition provides analysis of the Obama administration's space policy and the rise of new actors, including China, India, and Iran. His conclusion offers a unique perspective on the mutual risks militaries face in space and the need for all countries to commit to interdependent, environmentally focused space security.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results are presented of studies being conducted by NASA on the construction of very large spacecraft. The various approaches are discussed for constructing spacecraft and their relative merits. It is observed that the Space Station Freedom has all of the basic design characteristics to permit its growth into an in-space construction facility for very large spacecraft. Also it is noted that if disturbances from construction operations are intolerable to other Space Station experiments, a co-orbiting construction facility could be built using previously developed Space Station truss hardware and systems. A discussion is also presented of a new PATHFINDER research initiative on on-orbit construction. This research effort is aimed at developing construction methods for very large spacecraft and includes the development of a 100 meter long space crane. Mikulas, Martin M., Jr. and Dorsey, John T. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book further develops Professor Seaford's innovative work on the study of ritual and money in the developing Greek polis. It employs the concept of the chronotope, which refers to the phenomenon whereby the spatial and temporal frameworks explicit or implicit in a text have the same structure, and uncovers various such chronotopes in Homer, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Presocratic philosophy and in particular the tragedies of Aeschylus. Mikhail Bakhtin's pioneering use of the chronotope was in literary analysis. This study by contrast derives the variety of chronotopes manifest in Greek texts from the variety of socially integrative practices in the developing polis - notably reciprocity, collective ritual and monetised exchange. In particular, the Oresteia of Aeschylus embodies the reassuring absorption of the new and threatening monetised chronotope into the traditional chronotope that arises from collective ritual with its aetiological myth. This argument includes the first ever demonstration of the profound affinities between Aeschylus and the (Presocratic) philosophy of his time.

Book excerpt: Looks at the operations of the International Space Station from the perspective of the Houston flight control team, under the leadership of NASA's flight directors, who authored the book. The book provides insight into the vast amount of time and energy that these teams devote to the development, planning and integration of a mission before it is executed. The passion and attention to detail of the flight control team members, who are always ready to step up when things do not go well, is a hallmark of NASA human spaceflight operations. With tremendous support from the ISS program office and engineering community, the flight control team has made the International Space Station and the programs before it a success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolving uses of writing to command assent and obedience in early China, an evolution that culminated in the establishment of a textual canon as the foundation of imperial authority. Its central theme is the emergence of this body of writings as the textual double of the state, and of the text-based sage as the double of the ruler. The book examines the full range of writings employed in early China, such as divinatory records, written communications with ancestors, government documents, the collective writings of philosophical and textual traditions, speeches attributed to historical figures, chronicles, verse anthologies, commentaries, and encyclopedic compendia. Lewis shows how these writings served to administer populations, control officials, form new social groups, invent new models of authority, and create an artificial language whose master generated power and whose graphs became potent objects.
