The terrific, almost maddeningly insistent cry of the facts that poured in upon us was that this Opening quarter of the twentieth century was, on every evidence, certain to be one of the half-dozen great decisive hours that have struck in recorded time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Contractors and Builders' Handbook The third book is given over to subjects that are specially interesting to the building fraternity, and yet are of a broader scope than anything dealing with strictly technical work would be. There are no men who can help to fight the terrific fire waste better than builders, and it is necessary to keep them acquainted with the actual situation that is a disgrace to the United States. The educational chapters will be found interesting and useful. There is no good reason why the building business, in one branch or another, should pay such a heavy proportion of taxes and get such little recognition from the high school and library authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garbage Crematories in America Until May 1904 the writer had not directed his attention to the construction of garbage crematories, although he had been deeply interested in kindred problems. It then unex pectedly devolved upon him to remedy defects in the design of garbage crematories already built, and to advise regard ing the prosecution of patents in which friends were interested. This work involved investigation of what has been done in the field of crematory construction - a study which has been carried on by two methods, namely, inspection of instal lations actually built, and analysis of features of design as discoverable from Patent Office records. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Builder, Vol. 84: Jan. To June 1903 The last chapters in the history of this most famous of cities are perhaps as singular, and exhibit as curious traits of humanity at large, as any written in the earliest ages. The Jewish immigration, apparently without a scope, the objectless rivalry of the Christian sects, the unforeseen consequences of a small German colonisa tion, are as remarkable in their degree as the Crusades or the Biblical stories. An unfortunate fate hangs over Jerusalem - its history is the most interesting in the world, but of all its innumerable phases hardly a fragment remains in any monumental or artistic form. It seems a city doomed to perish perpetually, with every successive generation of its inhabitants. It remains to be'seen if modern influences will have any effect in giving to the city monumental buildings of a more permanent character. Book excerpt: Lean Thinking was launched in the fall of 1996, just in time for the recession of 1997. It told the story of how American, European, and Japanese firms applied a simple set of principles called 'lean thinking' to survive the recession of 1991 and grow steadily in sales and profits through 1996. Even though the recession of 1997 never happened, companies were starving for information on how to make themselves leaner and more efficient. Now we are dealing with the recession of 2001 and the financial meltdown of 2002. So what happened to the exemplar firms profiled in Lean Thinking? In the new fully revised edition of this bestselling book those pioneering lean thinkers are brought up to date. Authors James Womack and Daniel Jones offer new guidelines for lean thinking firms and bring their groundbreaking practices to a brand new generation of companies that are looking to stay one step ahead of the competition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laws of Ohio, Vol. 4: Governing the Location, Construction, Installation and Inspection of Plumbing and Drainage Definition Plumbing is the art of installing in buildings the pipes, fixtures and other apparatus for introducing the water supply and removing liquid and water-carried wastes. It must be installed in accordance with scientific principles and natural laws. Relation to Health The value of plumbing to public health is important because it removes human wastes from the immediate neighborhood of buildings. Plumbing also furnishes the opportunity for the liberal consumption and use of pure wholesome water for drinking, bathing, culinary and other domestic purposes. Water Supply and Service Distribution The distribution of an adequate supply of water sufficient in volume and pressure to flush the various fixtures, is absolutely essential in maintaining a system of plumbing sanitary. Control A water service to a building is usually controlled by a combination of stop and waste cocks or valves. The first is known as a corporation stop which is tapped into the street main. The second, the curb stop, is located beneath the side walk, close to the curb, protected by an iron case box. Third, the main house or meter stop and waste, is located within the cellar wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drainage and Sanitation: A Practical Exposition of the Conditions Vital to Healthy Buildings, Their Surroundings and Construction, Their Ventilation, Heating, Lighting, Water and Waste Services There are many conditions which a really healthy building should fulfil. It should, for example, be placed in hygienic surroundings, be well built, free from damp, well planned, ventilated, warmed, and lighted, have an efficient water supply and good sanitary fittings, be well drained, and be kept free from accumulations of refuse. An attempt has been made to deal with the subject in a systematic manner. Thus, in the case of water supply, the matter is started at the various sources of supply, traced to the point of distribution, and laid on to the house. Then follow the sanitary fittings and waste pipes, through which the fouled water leaves the house and enters the drainage. From the drains, one goes on to the sewers, and from them, to the works for the dis posal Of sewage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Excavating Machinery As its title indicates, the scope Of this book is to describe excavat ing machinery Of various kinds and the uses for which it is devised. During the past decade the development Of reclamation work in the western and southern sections Of the country by private enter prise and by local, state and national governments, has awakened great and general interest. The rapid extension and improvement Of railroad systems and the expansion Of great cities by the filling in Of adjacent waste lands, and by sanitary and other municipal works, have called for the use Of the most efficient machinery. Designers and builders have been stimulated by this demand and many marked improvements have been introduced into present-day machinery for these purposes. The author has endeavored to de scribe the makes and types Of excavators commonly used in all classes of work except marine dredging. He has not attempted to describe or even mention every make of excavator, but every type has been treated in sufficient detail to give a clear idea Of its construction and field Of work. The author has been impressed by the careless methods used in the construction and repair of excavators. A new machine is built more in accordance with the forms Of previous ones of the same Class, rather than in accordance with the demands Of the particular piece Of work to which it is to be applied. Rule of thumb methods are used instead Of original design. In making repairs, it is the gen eral custom to replace the broken parts with new ones exactly like the old ones, or after repeated breaks, to make the weak member a little stronger. This is Often blind guesswork, and is expensive both to the contractor and the owner and should be replaced by scientific study and accurate workmanship.
