Book excerpt: Summary The Nigerian theatre milieu is trapped in a cobweb of strangulating strings. Little wonder, therefore, that its growth has been impaired over the years. The numerous multi-tribal thrusts in Nigeria disallow the full growth and development of theatre forms and trends. The university and other degree-awarding institutions engaged in theatre studies, have not carved out uniquely distinguishing styles that can be said to be theirs. The Nigerian theatre makers themselves are not style-driven and technique-creating. An ideal repertory of form can hardly be identified with them in a sustainable manner. The National Theatre set up as a symbol of the nation's cultural pride, now stands as a totem for the nation's creative shame; The state-owned Cultural Centre Boards are devoid of objectives in focused cultural promotions. Many graduates of the arts-prefer other creative businesses. A few die-hards are bedeviled by frustrating dilemmas as businessmen refuse to patronise theatre because they consider it a wasteful venture, while international agencies shun it because of its profit-making outlook.
Download or read book Builders written by Darren Thiel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building workers constitute between five and ten per cent of the total labour market in almost every country of the world. They construct, repair and maintain the vital physical infrastructure of our societies, and we rely upon and trust their achievements every day. Yet we know surprisingly little about builders, their cultures, the organization of their work or the business relations that constitute their industry. This book, based on one-year’s participant observation on a London construction site, redresses this gap in our knowledge by taking a close-up look at a section of building workers and businessmen. By examining the organizational features of the building project and describing the skill, sweat, malingering, humour and humanity of the building workers, Thiel illustrates how the builders were mostly autonomous from formal managerial control, regulating their own outputs and labour markets. This meant that the men’s ethnic, class and gender-bound cultural activities fundamentally underpinned the organization of their work and the broader construction economy, and thereby highlights the continuing centrality of class-bound culture and social stratification in a post-industrial, late modern world. Thiel outlines the on-going connections and intersections between economy, state, class and culture, ultimately showing how these factors interrelated to produce the building industry, its builders, and its buildings. Based predominately on cultural and economic sociology, this book will also be of interest to those working in the fields of gender and organizational studies; social class and inequality; migration and ethnicity; urban studies; and social identities.

Book Synopsis Builders and Deserters by : Peter Konecny
Download or read book Builders and Deserters written by Peter Konecny and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-10-19 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a student meant much more than simply attending classes. The new Soviet student was expected to engage in activities ranging from work in local Communist Party organizations to participation in collectivization brigades in the countryside. Builders and Deserters explores how student attempts to accommodate personal ambition and established cultural traditions with the numerous obligations that came from their privileged status led to a difficult relationship with the state. Konecny discusses changes in the higher education system and everyday life from the pre-revolutionary period to the beginning of World War II. He also considers the world of politics and political activism, training in and out of the classroom, and the ways in which students both conformed to and deviated from explicit standards of social conduct and "Communist morality" under Stalinism. This is the first comprehensive analysis of the important role played by students in the Soviet socialist revolution during the inter-war period. The breadth of subject matter and thematic issues will interest scholars and students of Soviet history, as well as specialists in comparative education and youth culture.

Although she was working three jobs, she teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. Celeste and her seven-year-old son, Henry, lived in a rundown apartment in a bad neighborhood. This prompted her to pray every day for God to help her provide for her son. Henry also prayed every day for his mother to be happy. None of their prayers, however, had been answered. While eating a TV dinner for her Thanksgiving meal, Celeste reached her breaking point. Defeated, she realized that only a miracle could turn things around. Frustrated, she went to her church and asked God why he had not been honoring her requests. This time God spoke to her, but it was not the answer she had expected.
