Book Synopsis It's Your Ship by : Captain D. Michael Abrashoff
Download or read book It's Your Ship written by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-15 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary New York Times bestselling tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas. When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of USS Benfold, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity. Knowing that responsibility for improving performance rested with him, he realized he had to improve his own leadership skills before he could improve his ship. Within months, he created a crew of confident and inspired problem-solvers eager to take the initiative and responsibility for their actions. The slogan on board became "It's your ship," and Benfold was soon recognized far and wide as a model of naval efficiency. How did Abrashoff do it? Against the backdrop of today's United States Navy, Abrashoff shares his secrets of successful management including: See the ship through the eyes of the crew: By soliciting a sailor's suggestions, Abrashoff drastically reduced tedious chores that provided little additional value. Communicate, communicate, communicate: The more Abrashoff communicated the plan, the better the crew's performance. His crew eventually started calling him "Megaphone Mike," since they heard from him so often. Create discipline by focusing on purpose: Discipline skyrocketed when Abrashoff's crew believed that what they were doing was important. Listen aggressively: After learning that many sailors wanted to use the GI Bill, Abrashoff brought a test official aboard the ship-and held the SATs forty miles off the Iraqi coast. From achieving amazing cost savings to winning the highest gunnery score in the Pacific Fleet, Captain Abrashoff's extraordinary campaign sent shock waves through the U.S. Navy. It can help you change the course of your ship, no matter where your business battles are fought.

Book Synopsis The Build-up by : William Carlos Williams
Download or read book The Build-up written by William Carlos Williams and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1968 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Build-up, Volume 3 of the Stecher Trilogy, picks up the thread of White Mule and In the Money. Although all of the novels deal with the triumphant rise of an immigrant family in the early 1900s, The Build-up is more concerned with the overwhelming drive and ambition of Joe Stecher's wife, Gurlie. After years of hard work, careful planning (and his wife's badgering) Joe's printing business is providing his family with a comfortable income. As soon as her financial goal is realized, Gurlie focuses her attention on another area. Her phenomenal energy is soon earning her all unassailable position as a social leader in a small New Jersey suburb. Her achievement is not without its heartache, however. This story is told with all the gentle humor and exacting detail that mark Williams's prose works.

Book excerpt: Change happens! Make it work for you. That's the theme of the book. In today's fast-paced world, organisations and the people who work there are going through rapid change. Most successful leaders are able to make the most of these dynamic environments. They understand themselves, understand others and understand how to manage and motivate behavioural change. It is through these core skills that they are able to prosper through change, and gather the influence they need to be successful. These skills are relevant for everyone - regardless of their role or hierarchical position However, Step Up has been written specifically for people who are more technically focused, but are at that stage in their career where they know they need to change if they want to advance. They can be accountants, financial planners, risk management experts, financial controllers, engineers, scientists or even doctors. They are people who associate with their technical craft first, even though they may now be in a leadership role. Author, and change management expert, Michelle Gibbings believes that there are skills, practices and techniques that individuals, teams and organisations can apply to make change work. She shares these in her new book and they include learning how to: - Own your mindset - Strengthen your integrity - Be agile and know the system - Appeal to human insight and motivate - Create a story - Nurture relationships - Communicate with influence - Negotiate wisely. Step Up is practically focused and theoretically based. Every idea that is presented has at its core some form of scientific research or evidence that backs up the position. It includes practical things that you can do to build your platform for influence. 'To my mind, change is about getting stuff done and to get stuff done in an organisation you need to be influential' says Gibbings.
Book Synopsis A Time to Tear Down and a Time to Build Up by : Michael V. Fox
Download or read book A Time to Tear Down and a Time to Build Up written by Michael V. Fox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pervaded as it is with pessimism, paradox, and a multitude of contradictions, Ecclesiastes has long been one of the most difficult books of the Bible to understand. As this study demonstrates, however, it is precisely these contradictions that make Ecclesiastes so meaningful and so powerfully relevant to life in the world. By looking carefully at the language and thought of Ecclesiastes, as well as at its uses of contradictions in probing the meaning of life, Fox confronts the problems that have confounded interpretation of this biblical book. He shows that by using contradiction to tear down holistic claims of meaning and purpose in the world and rebuilding meaning in a local, restricted sense instead, the author of Ecclesiastes shapes a bold, honest-and ultimately uplifting-vision of life. Based on solid scholarly insight yet readable by all, Fox's work provides some of the best commentary available on this challenging section of Scripture.

Download or read book Buildup written by Daniel Wirls and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight-year Reagan presidency not only initiated the largest peacetime military buildup in American history but also altered traditional partisan alignments and revised the policy agenda of the welfare state. In his insightful book, Daniel Wirls clarifies the relationship between defense policy and domestic policy during this period of significant political change when he examines three defense policies, the political coalitions behind them, and their interactions. Wirls discusses the use of the rhetoric and resources of national security to build and maintain Reagan's conservative coalition and undermine Democratic politics; the importance of the peace movement in the mobilization of liberal opposition to the Reagan revolution; and the adoption and promotion of military reform, particularly by members of Congress, in response to the clash between the peace movement and the Reagan administration. He probes the political competition among these institutions and coalitions by examining three major defense policy initiatives--the Strategic Defense Initiative for the Reagan administration, the nuclear freeze proposal from the peace movement and the Democratic party, and the attempts by the military reform lobby in Congress to change the Pentagon's procurement practices--and he weighs the impact of those forces on the defense debate and domestic politics. Treating an inadequately developed aspect of the political process, this book will be of great interest to political scientists and historians concentrating in American domestic politics, security affairs specialists, and military historians.
Book Synopsis Debt Build-up in Frontier Low-Income Developing Countries (LIDCs) since 2012: Global or Country-specific Factors and Way Forward? by : Constance de Soyres
Download or read book Debt Build-up in Frontier Low-Income Developing Countries (LIDCs) since 2012: Global or Country-specific Factors and Way Forward? written by Constance de Soyres and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the debt build-up that frontier low-income developing countries (LIDCs) have faced since 2012. First, it documents a 20-percentage point increase in the external and government debt-to-GDP ratios, a composition shift toward higher non-concessional debt, and a rise in interest rate payments. Second, using panel regressions, it shows that while both global and country-specific factors are correlated with debt-to-GDP ratios over 1998–2016, global factors dominate for the period 2012–16. Third, through a small open-economy model, it shows that the projected tightening in global financial conditions would reduce debt-to-GDP ratios by less than the increase associated with the expected rise in investment.

Book Synopsis Dangerous Flashpoints in East Asia: The Military Build-up by : Saghir Iqbal
Download or read book Dangerous Flashpoints in East Asia: The Military Build-up written by Saghir Iqbal and published by Saghir Iqbal . This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major changes in East Asia have placed the region near the top of the World’s strategic agenda. East Asia has until recently experienced the fastest regional economic growth rate in the world for many years. Economic co-operation has been flourishing and economic interests have become the major reason in reshaping East Asian international relations. However, there have also been changes in the security environment, due to many factors, such as the reduction of US forces in East Asia, the disintegration of the Soviet Union (the decline of the Soviet Union’s presence in the region had led to renewed attention to traditional and potential rivalries among the major East Asian powers), and the concern of China’s hegemonistic ambitions.

Book Synopsis What Caused the Global Financial Crisis by : Erlend Nier
Download or read book What Caused the Global Financial Crisis written by Erlend Nier and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates empirically the drivers of financial imbalances ahead of the global financial crisis. Three factors may have contributed to the build-up of financial imbalances: (i) rising global imbalances (capital flows), (ii) monetary policy that might have been too loose, (iii) inadequate supervision and regulation. Panel data regressions are performed for OECD countries from 1999 to 2007, so as to shed light on the relative importance of these factors, as well as the extent to which these factors might have interacted in fuelling the build-up. We find that the build-up of financial imbalances was driven by capital inflows and an associated compression of the spread between long and short rates. The effect of capital inflows on the build-up is amplified where the supervisory and regulatory environment was relatively weak. We find that, by contrast, differences in monetary policy cannot account for differences across countries in the build-up of financial imbalances ahead of the crisis.
