Book Synopsis Les Choses Espagnoles by : Claudia Jeschke
Download or read book Les Choses Espagnoles written by Claudia Jeschke and published by epodium. This book was released on 2009 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 19th century culture, Hispanomania creates Les Choses espagnoles; they exhibit themselves as themes and forms of appearance as well as structures and techniques. Hispanomania is a temporary fashion and functions as a metaphor; it reflects numerous sources which are arranged in a fantastic way. Hispanomania leaves traces in the materials of the performative arts i.e., in librettos, theories, and reviews. The book focuses on re-construction of several concepts and practices in ‘Spanish’ dancing: an overview of dance librettology is linked to the discussion of ‘staging Spanishness’; the connection between choreography and dance-theoretical discourse concerning the Spanish is pursued; performances of Otherness – especially as monsters and women – are discussed in their theatrical and cultural contexts – as is the investigation of dance criticism; the hitherto little acknowledged biography of the then popular and highly productive choreographer Henri Justamant is highlighted …

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a historical and theoretical examination of French baroque court ballet from approximately 1573 until 1670. Spanning the late Renaissance and the Baroque, it brings aesthetic and ideological criteria to bear on court ballet libretti, period accounts, contemporaneous performance theory, and related commentary on dance and movement in literature. It studies the formal choreographic apparatus that characterises late Valois and early Bourbon ballet spectacle and how its changing aesthetic ultimately reflected the political situation of the nobles who devised et performed court ballets.

Book Synopsis Dance [and] Theory by : Gabriele Brandstetter
Download or read book Dance [and] Theory written by Gabriele Brandstetter and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the identity of dance and that of theory are at risk as soon as the two intertwine. This anthology collects observations by choreographers and scholars, dancers, dramaturges and dance theorists in an effort to trace the multiple ways in which dance and theory correlate and redefine each other: What is the nature of their relationship? How can we outline a theory of dance from our particular historical perspective which will cover dance both as a practice and as an academic concept? The contributions examine which concepts, interdependencies and discontinuities of dance and theory are relevant today and promise to engage us in the future. They address crucial topics of the current debate in dance and performance studies such as artistic research, aesthetics, politics, visuality, archives, and the »next generation«.

Book Synopsis Ritual Design for the Ballet Stage by : Hanna Walsdorf
Download or read book Ritual Design for the Ballet Stage written by Hanna Walsdorf and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish ceremony in Le Bourgeois gentilhomme has been popular with audiences for almost 350 years and remains one of the bestknown scenes of early modern French theatre. This newly researched volume spotlights the Turkish ceremony in its original technicolor, presenting numerous important discoveries that have never before been published. It shows that even in a field as thoroughly investigated as the collaboration between Molière and Lully at the court of Louis XIV, there is still much new source material to be discovered, and many new connections to be made. As the multidisciplinary essays examine the burlesque Turkish scene from a social, political, textual and iconographic view point they unearth, time and again, flaws, omissions and errors transmitted in earlier scholarship. Ritual Design is a must-have volume that sets the record straight.

Book Synopsis Letters on Dancing and Ballets by : Jean Georges Noverre
Download or read book Letters on Dancing and Ballets written by Jean Georges Noverre and published by David Leonard. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre's Letters On Dancing and Ballets were first published in Stuttgart in 1760, and set forth his ideas for the reform of ballet, ideas which were considered revolutionary in their day and indeed anticipated changes to be carried out more than a century later by Laban, Fokine, and Jooss. At a time when court ballet had degenerated into a meaningless succession of conventional dances, Noverre advocated a unity of design and a logical progression from introduction to climax in which the whole was not sacrificed to the part and anything unnecessary to the theme was eliminated. Movement was to be defined by the tone and time of the music, and choreographers were advised to avoid over-complicated steps and turn to nature for natural means of expression which could be understood by all. He advocated also the reform of costume, and lived to see masks, full-bottomed wigs and cumbersome dresses abandoned in favor of attire better suited to the roles portrayed. Noverre's Letters can be said without exaggeration to be one of the most important dance books ever published, and through its influence Noverre can be seen as the grandfather of ballet as we know it.
