Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intertwined issues of Japanese `identity' and `normality' are at the centre of the tension between internal and external pressures on Japanese defence and security policies. With chapters on peace thought, the militarisation and demilitarisation of language as well as the `hard' aspects of the Japanese military build up in the 1980s and the response to the Gulf War in the 1990s, this study challenges many of the preconceived notions on Japanese defence and security policies and the policy making process in Japan.

Book Synopsis Social Work Ethics by : Eileen Gambrill
Download or read book Social Work Ethics written by Eileen Gambrill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights ethical issues in social work which are often overlooked as well as recurring clashes that influence how they play out, for example among different values and related moral judgements. A wide range of ethical issues are addressed such as the types of technologies incorporated into social work; issues raised by the common position of social workers as 'double agents' required to carry out state mandates while also honoring obligations to clients; and issues concerning the distribution of scarce resources. These topics are integrally related to other often neglected concerns such as harming in the name of helping; the ethics of claims making regarding what is true and what is not, and related concerns regarding empowerment and social justice. This collection, which includes essays from an array of professions and disciplines, is designed to bring these neglected topics to the attention of readers and to offer suggestions for addressing them in a manner that is faithful to obligations described in social work codes of ethics.
Book Synopsis Conservative Capitalism in Britain and the United States (RLE Social Theory) by : Raymond Plant
Download or read book Conservative Capitalism in Britain and the United States (RLE Social Theory) written by Raymond Plant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shock waves of conservative advances have reached into every corner of American and British politics. Parties of the right have prospered, while parties of the left have stumbled, retreated, and are now regrouping. The agenda for both right and left is set by the terms of the free-market doctrines that have displaced the post-war consensus politics of liberal capitalism. This volume describes and challenges the ideological basis of the free-market right. Though critiques of the policies of the Reagan and Thatcher governments are hardly in short supply, this major new study offers the most thorough and up-to-date analysis available. No other book considers in such depth conservative ideas and policies on both sides of the Atlantic. It provides the first clear account of the distinction between conservative and other forms of capitalism. It also examines the fault lines dividing opposing camps within conservative capitalism and their consequences for domestic policy in Britain and the US. Linking political theory and public policy, it is one of the few critical appraisals of the New Right based on a clear understanding of what the arguments for the free market really are. Finally, the authors demonstrate what the left needs to learn from its failures, how to remould its understanding of the relationship between politics and the market, and how to recapture the lost initiative.

Download or read book Dominican Republic written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dominican Republic is confronting the worst economic crisis in its recent history. This memorandum examines its long-term prospects, its public finances, pricing policy in food crops, and the incentive structure facing importers and exporters. It concludes that, unless major policy initiatives are taken, growth in the second half of the 1980s will not resume the high rates experienced in the early 1970s. The foreign trade regime should be reformed to eliminate imbalances in trade, to make import substitution more efficient and promote new exports. Disincentives facing exporters should be reduced to encourage exports. New taxes and improvement in the performance of public enterprises are necessary to reduce fiscal deficits; the public investment program, constrained by the lack of public savings, should concentrate on high-return projects already underway. The country's natural endowments favoring food production could be exploited more fully if government price distortions were eliminated.
