Book Synopsis The Communal Experience of the Kibbutz by : Joseph Blasi
Download or read book The Communal Experience of the Kibbutz written by Joseph Blasi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Blasidocuments and describes the workings of an existing kibbutz society to provide a model for Utopian thinking and clear up confusion concerning Utopian values. He details the history and development of Kibbutz Vatik (a pseudonym), providing a systematic record of kibbutz culture: daily life and social arrangements, economic cooperation and work, politics, education, and attitudes of community members.Despite its advantages as a model Utopia, the kibbutz is not a perfect society. Having eliminated the most serious forms of social, economic, political, and educational fragmentation and violence, the communal group is left with the complicated and mounting problems of keeping a fellowship alive and well. Blasi assesses the community's advantages and disadvantages, illuminating the interlocking dilemmas that cut across social and political concerns. The Communal Experience of the Kibbutz updates our knowledge of kibbutz life in light of recent research. It gives a detailed account of the Utopian community in the kibbutz and its activities. The special quality of the kibbutz, Blasi argues, lies not so much in its proven success vis-a-vis other communal societies, but in that it is a communal alternative that most Western peoples can readily visualize as a real option.

Book excerpt: Annotation Although growth of infrastructure services in Vietnam since the late 1980s greatly facilitated rapid growth in exports and gross domestic product (GDP), Vietnam's infrastructure still suffers from a number of major inadequacies. This report has three main objectives: to describe and assess the current status and performance of key infrastructure sectors; to describe and assess the policy, regulatory, and institutional environment for involving the private sector in those sectors; and to help policymakers in framing future reform and development strategies and to assist potential private sector investors in assessing investment opportunities.

Book Synopsis Unequal Partners by : Casey Ritchie Clevenger
Download or read book Unequal Partners written by Casey Ritchie Clevenger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of Catholicism, we think of Europe and the United States as the seats of its power. But while much of Catholicism remains headquartered in the West, the Church’s center of gravity has shifted to Africa, Latin America, and developing Asia. Focused on the transnational Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Unequal Partners explores the ways gender, race, economic inequality, and colonial history play out in religious organizations, revealing how their members are constantly negotiating and reworking the frameworks within which they operate. Taking us from Belgium and the United States to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sociologist Casey Clevenger offers rare insight into how the sisters of this order work across national boundaries, shedding light on the complex relationships among individuals, social groups, and formal organizations. Throughout, Clevenger skillfully weaves the sisters’ own voices into her narrative, helping us understand how the order has remained whole over time. A thoughtful analysis of the ties that bind—and divide—the sisters, Unequal Partners is a rich look at transnationalism’s ongoing impact on Catholicism.

This book was released on 2021-11-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth history of three US-based communal societies that operated in the late 1960s and 1970s—Soul City, Stelle and Twin Oaks—with an emphasis on their financing, marketing, and entrepreneurship processes. These communities reflect the diversity of people who were dissatisfied with the direction in which American society was heading—often underpinned by concerns over racism, sexism, the environment, and capitalism—and decided to take the radical step of joining a communal society. A moral economy approach offers a lens on how these communities were prevented from fully realizing their visions due to the confines of capitalism, as embedded in banking practices, zoning laws, and systemic racism.
