Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable story about a brother and sister's determination to attend school—and their inventive solution to get there safely. Features an afterword from Julian Lennon, and notes from co-authors Aaron Friedland and Ndileka Mandela. Every morning, Shaka and his little sister Nandi walk with their father to school. Though the journey is long and hot, they arrive at school happy to see their friends and ready to learn. Then one day, their father gives them terrible news: he has to go work in a mine far away, and they won’t be able to go to school anymore. The route is too dangerous for them to walk alone, so they'll have to stay home. But when they discover a yellow toy bus in the dirt, Shaka and Nandi let their imaginations run wild. Could they buy their own school bus? Or build one themselves? Their plans prove much harder than they thought—but just when they're about to give up, Shaka and Nandi come up with an ingenious solution to get to school, one that will take the whole community to help. With lively illustrations from Andrew Jackson Obol, The Walking School Bus is an engaging story that shows the challenges many children around the world face in accessing education, as well as the creativity and community spirit that can help overcome them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For students to be successful in school, they first have to be in school." With that simple statement, Jessica Sprick and Randy Sprick launch a compelling case for prioritizing student attendance. This comprehensive guide provides school and district-level administrators and teams with the background information, strategies, and tools needed to implement a multitiered approach to improving attendance and preventing chronic absence. The authors use the results of their work in schools throughout the United States to dispel the myth that educators have little control over student attendance and provide success stories from elementary and secondary schools that have reversed longstanding patterns of absenteeism. Citing extensive research, Sprick and Sprick share details about the shocking prevalence of chronic absence in U.S. schools and its effects on students, teachers, families, and the school community. They explain how to replace punitive approaches to absenteeism with effective methods that begin with universal supports and continue through Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions for students with more persistent problems. Specifically, they explain how to Build an effective school team to address absenteeism . Create systems to collect accurate data and set priorities. Develop an attendance initiative that generates student enthusiasm as well as staff, parent, and community support. Design and implement strategies that are tailored to specific schoolwide concerns and demographics that reach all students. Equipped with the information and tools presented in this book, educators can ensure wise use of staff and other resources—and create a culture of attendance that is the foundation of successful schools. This book is a copublication of ASCD and Ancora Publishing.

Book excerpt: A delightful new book from Tom Brandon, "2013 Steve Harvey Bus Driver of the Year," reminds us of the wisdom of children and their uncanny ability to teach adults a thing or two. Mr. Brandon's School Bus, published by NewSouth Books, collects in one volume the insightful and often humorous conversations children have had while riding on Brandon's big yellow school bus over the years. You know the things your child hears at home that you don't want repeated elsewhere? Tom Brandon says you can count on them to be told with gusto on the way to school. So climb on board and, as "Mr. Mucus" would say, "Sit back and enjoy the ride." Hey, there are some things you just can't make up. Of author Tom Brandon, Larry Lee, Alabama's foremost education blogger, says, "Each school bus is a little magic kingdom where fantasies come alive and the sweet innocence of childhood sometimes meets reality. With the keen eye and ear of a good storyteller, Tom Brandon has chronicled the great adventures of his riders with a talent that makes you see the smile and hear the giggles. Thanks to him for doing so."

Book excerpt: From the tobacco and cotton fields in North Carolina to working in middle management in a Fortune 500 company, Bales & Bolls chronicles E. J. Cashs journey to overcome the problems of her dysfunctional upbringing in the Jim Crow South of the forties and fifties. Struggling to survive the erratic behavior of her alcoholic father with his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality created fear, conflict, and confusion, as she grappled with his attempts to rape her, his voyeurism, and his brutal use of the belt. And her mothers silence strained their relationship, causing a breach difficult to overcome. Hers is a hard-fought journey breaking free from Jim Crow and its limitations from without and her fathers lewdness and her mothers complicity from within. Then she stumbled into a relationship with God, beginning a spiritual journey leading to the discovery of Gods transforming power of healing through repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
