Complete mappings of the shell imperfections and the prebuckling growth were obtained. The lightly ring-stiffened shells behaved in a manner similar to the isotropic shells that were previously tested. For these shells, the predominant prebuckling deformation consisted of a half-wave in the axial direction with several circumferential waves. The similarity of the lightly ring-stiffened shells and the isotropic ones suggests that the uniqueness of the buckling mode for stiffened shells may not greatly influence the prebuckling behavior. The heavily ring-stiffened shells showed a sizable amount of short wave length axisymmetric growth before buckling. Buckling in all cases resulted in an asymmetric pattern. The stringer-stiffened shells showed a prebuckling behavior also similar to the isotropic results. However, the buckling pattern consisted of longer axial wave lengths. Correlation of the experimentally obtained buckling loads with linear buckling theory showed good agreement in most cases. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report contains documentation for four computer programs used in the imperfection sensitivity analysis of cylindrical shells. The four programs are based upon Donnell's equation for cylindrical shells. The formulation of each program is worked in detail so others may make modification. Input and output instructions, together with the program listings, are provided. This report is in two volumes. Volume I discusses the development and applications of the programs, and Volume II is the user's manual.

These analyses are used to study one well characterized stringer-stiffened cylindrical shell. The ability of each analysis to predict the actual experimental buckling load is examined. In addition, the information obtained from each analysis is used when proceeding to a higher level of analysis complexity. Based upon this study, a procedure for calculating a "knockdown" factor is proposed, to replace the traditional empirical knockdown factor."

There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of·the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".

Book excerpt: This collection of papers, written by friends and colleagues of Josef Singer, presents a comprehensive and timely review of the theoretical mechanics of thin shell-structures. Topics of great current interest such as the buckling of composite plates and shells, the plastic buckling of thin-walled structures and the optimum design of buckling sensitive curved composite panels are examined by experts, using a great diversity of approaches, whereby theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results whenever possible.Other topics reviewed include the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of imperfect shells under different external static or dynamic loads and a variety of boundary conditions. Papers dealing with the vibration and the dynamic response of thin elastic bodies are also presented.A strong emphasis is made on the practical applications aspect in the theories presented. Thus engineers, research workers and students who are involved with the design and analysis of shell structures made of different materials, and subjected to various static and dynamic loads will find this volume an invaluable source of reference.

This symposium, one of several on various topics sponsored annually by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me chanics (IUTAM), was organized by a Scientific Committee consisting of B. Budiansky (Chairman), A. H. Chilver, W. T. Koiter, and A. S. Vol' mir. Participation was by invitation of the Scientific Committee, and specific lecturers were invited to speak in the areas of experimental research, buckling and post-buckling calculations, post-buckling mode interaction, plasticity and creep effects, dynamic buckling, stochastic problems, and design. A total of 29 lectures were delivered, including a general opening lecture by Professor Koiter, and there were 93 reg istered participants from 16 different countries. Financial support for the symposium was provided by IUTAM, in the form of partial travel support for a number of participants, and also by the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Re search, for additional travel support and administrative expenses. Meeting facilities and services were efficiently provided by the Science Center of Harvard University, and administrative support was gen erously provided by the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics of Harvard University. The scientific chairman enjoyed the invaluable assistance of his colleagues Professors J. W. Hutchinson and J. L.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory developed by W.T. Koiter for the initial postbuckling behavior of thin-walled shells is applied in an analysis of the imperfection sensitivity of ring-and-stringer stiffened cylinders subjected to axial compression. The cylinders are considered to be simply supported, and both eccentricity and torsional rigidity of stiffeners are taken into account. Values of a so-called imperfection sensitivity parameter are determined for particular stiffened cylinders, and the suitability of the parameter as a practical measure of imperfection sensitivity is examined. Theoretical results are correlated with available data for the experimental buckling loads of stringer stiffened cylinders. The evidence for the suitability of the parameter as a practical measure of imperfection sensitivity is judged to be promising but not conclusive. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the axial buckling load of cylinders formed by a process of plastic expansion due to internal pressure. Test cylinders 21.6 cm in diameter, 0.330 mm thick, were formed by plastic expansion from 15.23 cm diameter commercial, welded, type 304 stainless steel tubing. Buckling loads from 50 to 71 percent of the classical value showed a definite relationship with the local decrease in curvature due to the worst imperfections. Buckling loads were substantially higher than expected in relation to the amplitude of their geometric imperfections. The results indicate that the process of plastic expansion may provide a means of producing certain types of cylinders of unusually high buckling load at low cost.

Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and concern in a wide range of industries. This book presents a compilation and synthesis of a wealth of research, experience and knowledge of the subject. Information that was previously widely scattered throughout the literature is assembled in a concise and convenient form that is easy to understand, and state-of-the-art research findings are thoroughly examined. This book is useful for those involved in the structural design of silos, tanks, pipelines, biodigestors, chimneys, towers, offshore platforms, aircraft and spacecraft. Buckling of Thin Metal Shells is essential reading for designers, researchers and code writers involved with thin-walled metal shell structures.
