Book excerpt: The study of the seismic response of broad, anchored, cylindrical liquid-storage tanks has large practical significance because these structures are used in many critical engineering applications (petroleum industries, nuclear power stations, municipal water supply systems, wine industries ...). The performance of such tanks during recent earthquakes and in experiments has indicated that the existing codes for designing tanks are in need of improvement. Due to the complexity of the dynamic analysis, several researchers have used a static approach to predict the dynamic buckling load. It has been demonstrated that such a static analysis yields useful information. On the basis of this finding, an approximate analytical method is developed to study the buckling of broad, anchored, cylindrical liquid-storage tanks subjected to horizontal ground motion. The solution is based on the linearized Donnell's shell stability equations and Galerkin's approach. The smallest buckling load (or the critical load factor) is calculated using the inverse iteration method. Theoretical results are then determined for two cases of broad tanks presented as examples. The validity of the findings of the present work is checked through comparison with results obtained by the numerical Finite Element Method (FEM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes methods used to estimate forces and deformations in structures during future earthquakes. It synthesizes the topics related to ground motions with those related to structural response and, therefore, closes the gap between geosciences and engineering. Requiring no prior knowledge, the book elucidates confusing concepts related to ground motions and structural response and enables the reader to select a suitable analysis method and implement a cost‐effective seismic design. Presents lucid, accessible descriptions of key concepts in ground motions and structural response and easy to follow descriptions of methods used in seismic analysis; Explains the roles of strength, deformability, and damping in seismic design; Reinforces concepts with real‐world examples; Stands as a ready reference for performance‐based/risk-based seismic design, providing guidance for achieving a cost-effective seismic design.

Book excerpt: This innovative volume provides a systematic treatment of the basic concepts and computational procedures for structural motion design and engineering for civil installations. The authors illustrate the application of motion control to a wide spectrum of buildings through many examples. Topics covered include optimal stiffness distributions for building-type structures, the role of damping in controlling motion, tuned mass dampers, base isolation systems, linear control, and nonlinear control. The book's primary objective the satisfaction of motion-related design requirements such as restrictions on displacement and acceleration and seeks the optimal deployment of material stiffness and motion control devices to achieve these design targets as well as satisfy constraints on strength. The book is ideal for practicing engineers and graduate students.

Book excerpt: This book treats corrosion as it occurs and affects processes in real-world situations, and thus points the way to practical solutions. Topics described include the conditions in which petroleum products are corrosive to metals; corrosion mechanisms of petroleum products; which parts of storage tanks containing crude oils and petroleum products undergo corrosion; dependence of corrosion in tanks on type of petroleum products; aggressiveness of petroleum products to polymeric material; how microorganisms take part in corrosion of tanks and pipes containing petroleum products; which corrosion monitoring methods are used in systems for storage and transportation of petroleum products; what corrosion control measures should be chosen; how to choose coatings for inner and outer surfaces of tanks containing petroleum products; and how different additives (oxygenates, aromatic solvents) to petroleum products and biofuels influence metallic and polymeric materials. The book is of interest to corrosion engineers, materials engineers, oil and gas engineers, petroleum engineers, chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, failure analysts, scientists, and students, designers of tanks, pipelines and other systems for storage and transportation fuels, technicians. Book excerpt: Guide to Storage Tanks and Equipment has been designed to provide practical information about all aspects of the design, selection and use of vertical cylindrical storage tanks. Other tanks are covered but in less detail. Although the emphasis is on practical information, basic theory is also covered. Guide to Storage Tanks and Equipment is a practical reference book written for specifiers, designers, constructors and users of ambient and low temperature storage tanks. The book is aimed at everyone who has technical problems as well as those wanting to know more about all aspects of tank technology and also those who want to know who supplies what, and from where. Steel storage tanks are an important and costly part of oil refineries, terminals, chemical plants and power stations. They should function efficiently and be trouble free at their maximum storage capacity to ensure that these installations can have their planned maximum production capacity.
