Book Synopsis The Horse in the Ancient World by : Carolyn Willekes
Download or read book The Horse in the Ancient World written by Carolyn Willekes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domestication of the horse in the fourth millennium BC altered the course of mankind's future. Formerly a source only of meat, horses now became the prime mode of fast transport as well as a versatile weapon of war. Carolyn Willekes traces the early history of the horse through a combination of equine iconography, literary representations, fieldwork and archaeological theory. She explores the ways in which horses were used in the ancient world, whether in regular cavalry formations, harnessed to chariots, as a means of reconnaissance, in swift and deadly skirmishing (such as by Scythian archers) or as the key mode of mobility. Establishing a regional typology of ancient horses - Mediterranean, Central Asian and Near Eastern - the author discerns within these categories several distinct sub-types. Explaining how the physical characteristics of each type influenced its use on the battlefield - through grand strategy, singular tactics and general deployment - she focuses on Egypt, Persia and the Hittites, as well as Greece and Rome. This is the most comprehensive treatment yet written of the horse in antiquity.

Download or read book Riding Bucephalus written by Dr. William Kell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on this planet is lived just above your neck between your two ears. You are what you think. The Bible talks about the “mind of Christ”. That phrase is referring to the way Jesus thought. We are encouraged to download that mind, that way of thinking. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5) In other words, think like Jesus. Biblical Christianity has always contended that Jesus is God in the flesh. Jesus is God incarnate. When you think like Jesus, you are thinking like God. We know how Jesus thought. Just read the Scriptures. God does not know what defeat is experientially. He has never known anything other than victory. God does not know what fear is experientially. He has never known fear. Fear is a chaotic bundle of dark thoughts. Defeat is a series of fearful thoughts. Victory is a mental perspective. In this book, I am going to lay out a pattern for developing a victory mindset. Simply put, I want you to download the thinking of Heaven. Jesus’ thought system is from above. It is not of this world. My passion is that you invite and welcome as a valued and cherished guest the Kingdom invasion of the mind. Think like God.

Book Synopsis Language and Time by : Quentin Smith
Download or read book Language and Time written by Quentin Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a defense of the tensed theory of time, a critique of the New Theory of Reference, and an argument that simultaneity is absolute. Although Smith rejects ordinary language philosophy, he shows how it is possible to argue from the nature of language to the nature of reality. Specifically, he argues that semantic properties of tensed sentences are best explained by the hypothesis that they ascribe to events temporal properties of futurity, presentness, or pastness and do not merely ascribe relations of earlier than or simultaneity. He criticizes the New Theory of Reference, which holds that "now" refers directly to a time and does not ascribe the property of presentness. Smith does not adopt the old or Fregean theory of reference but develops a third alternative, based on his detailed theory of de re and de dicto propositions and a theory of cognitive significance. He concludes the book with a lengthy critique of Einstein's theory of time. Smith offers a positive argument for absolute simultaneity based on his theory that all propositions exist in time. He shows how Einstein's relativist temporal concepts are reducible to a conjunction of absolutist temporal concepts and relativist nontemporal concepts of the observable behavior of light rays, rigid bodies, and the like.

Book excerpt: Metaphysics: The Basics is a concise and engaging introduction to the philosophical study of some of the most important and foundational aspects of the world in which we live. Concerned with questions about existence, time, identity, change, and other basic elements of our common-sense and scientific ways of thinking about the world, metaphysics has long fascinated people. But to the uninitiated, many of the issues and problems can appear bewilderingly complex and intractable. In this lively and lucid book, Michael Rea examines and explains the core questions in the study of metaphysics—questions such as: What is the relationship between an object and its properties, or between an object and its parts? What is time, and is time travel possible? Are human beings free? What is it for an object or person to persist over time? This second edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a new chapter on the metaphysics of gender. With suggestions for further reading and a glossary of key terms, Metaphysics: The Basics is an ideal introduction for those coming to the subject for the first time.
