Book Synopsis Transition and Transgression by : Judith Inggs
Download or read book Transition and Transgression written by Judith Inggs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conveys the story of a society in the throes of restructuring itself and struggling to find a new identity. A particularly attractive aspect of this study is the focus on young adult literature and its place in post-apartheid South Africa, as well as its potential use in the classroom and lecture hall. Intersecting these two topics provides a compelling lens for refocusing debate on young adult fiction while offering a new and novel angle on debates in South Africa after the end of apartheid. The multilingual and multicultural South African society has resulted in fiction that differs from other parts of the English-speaking world. This work presents a holistic critique of South African young adult fiction and addresses issues such as change and transformation, identity politics, sexuality, and the issue of the right of white writers to represent and “write” characters of different races.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to International Children's Literature by : John Stephens
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to International Children's Literature written by John Stephens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating the aesthetic, cultural, political and intellectual diversity of children’s literature across the globe, The Routledge Companion to International Children’s Literature is the first volume of its kind to focus on the undervisited regions of the world. With particular focus on Asia, Africa and Latin America, the collection raises awareness of children’s literature and related media as they exist in large regions of the world to which ‘mainstream’ European and North American scholarship pays very little attention. Sections cover: • Concepts and theories • Historical contexts and national identity • Cultural forms and children’s texts • Traditional story and adaptation • Picture books across the majority world • Trends in children’s and young adult literatures. Exposition of the literary, cultural and historical contexts in which children’s literature is produced, together with an exploration of intersections between these literatures and more extensively researched areas, will enhance access and understanding for a large range of international readers. The essays offer an ideal introduction for those newly approaching literature for children in specific areas, looking for new insights and interdisciplinary perspectives, or interested in directions for future scholarship.

Book Synopsis Cannibal Talk by : Gananath Obeyesekere
Download or read book Cannibal Talk written by Gananath Obeyesekere and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-06-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this radical reexamination of the notion of cannibalism, Gananath Obeyesekere offers a fascinating and convincing argument that cannibalism is mostly "cannibal talk," a discourse on the Other engaged in by both indigenous peoples and colonial intruders that results in sometimes funny and sometimes deadly cultural misunderstandings. Turning his keen intelligence to Polynesian societies in the early periods of European contact and colonization, Obeyesekere deconstructs Western eyewitness accounts, carefully examining their origins and treating them as a species of fiction writing and seamen's yarns. Cannibalism is less a social or cultural fact than a mythic representation of European writing that reflects much more the realities of European societies and their fascination with the practice of cannibalism, he argues. And while very limited forms of cannibalism might have occurred in Polynesian societies, they were largely in connection with human sacrifice and carried out by a select community in well-defined sacramental rituals. Cannibal Talk considers how the colonial intrusion produced a complex self-fulfilling prophecy whereby the fantasy of cannibalism became a reality as natives on occasion began to eat both Europeans and their own enemies in acts of "conspicuous anthropophagy."
