Book excerpt: We set a preliminary 95% C.L. exclusion on the oscillation frequency of B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z[sup 0] decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC during the 1996-98 run. Three analyses are presented in this paper. The first analysis partially reconstructs the B[sub s][sup 0] by combining a fully reconstructed D[sub s] with the remaining charged B decay tracks. The second analysis selects a sample of events with a partially reconstructed charm vertex and a lepton track. The third analysis reconstructs b-hadrons topologically and exploits the b[yields] c cascade charge structure to determine the flavor of the b-hadron at decay. All three analyses take advantage of the large forward-backward asymmetry of the polarized Z[sup 0][yields] b[bar b] decays and information in the hemisphere opposite to the reconstructed B vertex to determine the b-hadron flavor at production. The results of the three analyses are combined to exclude the following values of the B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] oscillation frequency:[Delta]m[sub s]

Book excerpt: We have performed a sensitive search for B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z[sup 0] decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC between 1996 and 1998. B[sub s][sup 0] and[bar B][sub s][sup 0] events were produced by Z[sup 0][yields] b[bar b] decays where each side hadronized independently to b hadrons. The analysis determines the b hadron flavor at production by exploiting the large polarized forward-backward asymmetry of the b quark as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay. The final state b quark flavor is determined by the charge of a high p[sub T] lepton. A novel, highly efficient vertexing technique has been developed to locate the B decay vertex by exploiting the high p[sub T] lepton and the semileptonic decay topology. No significant mixing signal was found and the following ranges of the oscillation frequency of B[sub s][sup 0]-[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing are excluded at 95% CL from the analysis presented in this thesis:[Delta]m[sub s]

The Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM) has been confirmed by thousands of experimental measurements with a high precision. But the SM leaves important questions open, like what is the nature of dark matter or what is the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. By comparing high precision Standard Model calculations with extremely precise measurements, one can find the first glimpses of the physics beyond the SM – currently we see the first hints of a potential breakdown of the SM in flavour observables. This can then be compared with purely theoretical considerations about new physics models, known as model building. Both precision calculations and model building are extremely specialised fields and this outstanding thesis contributes significantly to both topics within the field of Flavour Physics and sheds new light on the observed anomalies.
