Book excerpt: Warning: this is not a religious book! Brothers, the first book in the Brothers Series, opens in Hell. A modern fantasy/romance, the book describes the efforts of Lucifer to win, wed and impregnate a human female in the hopes of siring the "Antagonist" and bringing about the "Rule of Chaos". This would allow Lucifer free reign over the Earth and its inhabitants. Lucifer's Father, The Old Man (aka T.O.M.), cannot allow this but, at the same time because of free-will, cannot openly prevent it. His solution is to send Michael the Archangel to woo the targeted female away from his satanic brother. Michael, whose talent lies not in charm but in military matters, balks but must finally submit to his Father's will. Much of the action takes place in Scajaquada, New York, a small town on Long Island. Perhaps the fact that it's a liberal community and has long accepted "outsiders" makes it an easy target for such outré doings. In any case, Catherine O'Connor is not aware of the identity of the doctor who is paying her court because Lucius Farrell is in reality Lucifer. Since Lucifer's main talent is charm, it's hard to Cathie to resist him....until she meets a clumsy young man named Michael Angeli who also has a secret identity. Adding spice to the above mixture is the presence of Lucifer's Lieutenant, Beelzebub, who is acting as his master's butler under the name "Beezly". Michael's fragile ego takes many hits and he sustains many shocks before the final outcome. Included in these shocks is the arrival of his nephew, Ashmadai, Lucifer's exiled son along with a fellow-demon named Otis. The human members of the town are not just window-dressing but take an active part in proceedings even though they haven't the slightest idea of the importance of the ongoing battle between the Brothers. Cathie's parents and brother, her best friend, Sarah, and her husband, a nurse named Nell who loves a demon and Nell's friend, Caroline, who has just rescued a demon herself. This is not a religious book nor meant to convey any message. It is, instead.....I hope, a rollicking good read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very traditional/untraditional novel. On the surface,it follows the lives of two brothers, close in age, who are bitter rivals in the end. We have the biblical Cain and Able reborn in the bodies of Billy and Bruce Aben. Bruce is the good brother. Single, middle class, with a white collar job, he leads a perfectly contented life in New York City. He takes two vacations a year, has his patented circle of friends and treasures playing the classical guitar. He prides himself on being the most decent person he knows. Billy on the other hand is the ultimate rebel. He hates middle class values; he abhors surrounding himself with comfort. The world to him is one big sham. Morality is for morons like his brother Bruce. The only thing that matters is making a quick buck any way you can; commodity trading, stock manipulation, outright theft are all permissible in Billys world. So there you have the brothers. One can only imagine their interaction. Brothers Of The Four Corners is a serious book with comedic overtones. There are elements of insanity combined with rivetting action/adventure sequences. The novel juggles a variety of issues simultaneously like: a family gone wrong; mans loneliness and alienation; religious intolerance; financial charlatanism and racketeering; racism in the guise of humanitarianism; and international espionage. In the end, these elements intertwine toward a twisted end. This makes for a really good read that will take you on a journey thats never boring.

This book is generally considered to be his masterpiece and probably greatest novel. Although it is the story of Fyodor Karamazov and his sons Alyosha, Dmitry, and Ivan, it is also a story of patricide and Dostoyevsky introduces a love-hate struggle with psychological and spiritual implications. There persists a search for faith, for God, throughout the novel which is the central idea of the work. Ivan’s repudiation of God’s world is elucidated in the famous “Legend of the Grand Inquisitor.” There is a response to Ivan that is contained in the preaching of the monk Zosima. It clearly states that the secret of universal harmony is achieved not by the mind but by the heart. Alyosha, Dostoyevsky’s attempts to create a realistic Christ figure. The focuses on Dostoyevsky’s theological and philosophical themes: the origin of evil, the nature of freedom, and the craving for faith. While tracing the dynamics of Ivan’s guilt, the author provides a psychological justification for Christian teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dmitri Karamazov and his father Fyodor are at war over both Dmitri’s inheritance and the affections of the beautiful Grushenka. Into this feud arrive the middle brother Ivan, recently returned from Moscow, and the youngest sibling Alyosha, who has been released into the wider world from the local monastery by the elder monk Zossima. Through a series of accidents of fate and wilful misunderstandings the Karamazovs edge closer to tragedy, while the local townspeople watch on. The Brothers Karamazov was Fyodor Dostoevsky’s final novel, and was originally serialised in The Russian Messenger before being published as a complete novel in 1880. This edition is the well-received 1912 English translation by Constance Garnett. As well as earning wide-spread critical acclaim, the novel has been widely influential in literary and philosophical circles; Franz Kafka and James Joyce admired the emotions that verge on madness in the Karamazovs, while Sigmund Freud and Jean-Paul Satre found inspiration in the themes of patricide and existentialism. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
