Book excerpt: In Memory of Don Edgar Lenz (1957-1983) In 1983, a recurring dream Paula had proved to be a precognitive warning. The sudden, shocking loss of her brother, Don, that year would come close to completely destroying Paula. She did not know, however, that his death would result in strange occurrences and outreach from him for the rest of her life. Three days after Don's funeral, Paula had an out-of-body experience with her brother's spirit while she was driving. The result was a visit to "infinity" and a change in her consciousness. Paula recounts stories about her brother from her family as well as from Don's closest friends, painting a picture of a beloved brother, son, and friend. She hopes her story will provide comfort to those who have experienced the loss of someone they love deeply.

Book Synopsis The Justice Facade by : Alexander Hinton
Download or read book The Justice Facade written by Alexander Hinton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Justice? Is it always just 'to come'? Can real experience be translated into law? Examining Cambodia's troubled reconciliation, Alexander Hinton suggests an approach to justice founded on global ideals of the rule of law, democratization, and a progressive trajectory towards liberty and freedom, and which seeks to align the country with so called universal modes of thought, is condemned to failure. Instead, Hinton advocates focusing on the individual lived experience, and the discourses, interstices, and the combustive encounters connected with it, as a radical alternative. A phenomenology inspired approach towards healing national trauma, Hinton's ground-breaking text will make anybody with an interest in transitional justice, development, humanitarian intervention, human rights, or peacebuilding, question the value of an established truth.
Book Synopsis Rites of Conquest by : Charles E. Cleland
Download or read book Rites of Conquest written by Charles E. Cleland and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, Michigan's native peoples, the Anishnabeg, thrived in the forests and along the shores of the Great Lakes. Theirs were cultures in delicate social balance and in economic harmony with the natural order. Rites of Conquest details the struggles of Michigan Indians - the Ojibwa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi, and their neighbors - to maintain unique traditions in the wake of contact with Euro-Americans. The French quest for furs, the colonial aggression of the British, and the invasion of native homelands by American settlers is the backdrop for this fascinating saga of their resistance and accommodation to the new social order. Minavavana's victory at Fort Michilimackinac, Pontiac's attempts to expel the British, Pokagon's struggle to maintain a Michigan homeland, and Big Abe Le Blanc's fight for fishing rights are a few of the many episodes recounted in the pages of this book. -- from back cover.

Download or read book False Prophets and Preachers written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1534, a radical group of Anabaptists, gripped with apocalyptic fervor, seized the city of Münster and established an idealistic communal government that quickly deteriorated into extreme inequality and theocratic totalitarianism. In response, troops hired by the city's prince-bishop laid siege to the city. Fifteen months later the besieged inhabitants were starving, and, in the dead of the night, five men slipped out. Separated from his fellow escapees, Henry Gresbeck gambled with his life by approaching enemy troops. Taken prisoner, he collaborated with the enemy to devise a plan to recapture Münster, and later recorded the only eyewitness account of the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster. Gresbeck's account, which attempts to explain his role in the bizarre events, disappeared into the archives and was largely ignored for centuries. Before now, Gresbeck's account was only available in a heavily edited German copy adapted from inferior manuscripts. Christopher S. Mackay, who previously produced the only modern translation of the main Latin account of these events, has adhered closely to Gresbeck’s own words to produce the first complete and accurate English translation of this important primary source.
