Book excerpt: First published in 1906, The Fool of Quality; a picaresque and sentimental novel by the Irish writer Henry Brooke, is the only one of his works which has enjoyed any great reputation. The somewhat shapeless plot is an account of the doings of young Harry Clinton, who, rejected by his decadent and aristocratic father, is educated on enlightened principles by his philanthropic uncle. Thus equipped to fight the evils of the world the innocent yet wise hero does his best to better the lot of the unfortunate Hammel Clement and his family, and other deserving cases, in the intervals between the author's frequent philosophical digressions and commentaries on the action. It is the first of five volumes.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Sensibility by : Markman Ellis
Download or read book The Politics of Sensibility written by Markman Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sentimental novel has long been noted for its liberal and humanitarian interests, but also for its predilection for refined feeling, the privilege it accords emotion over reason, and its preference for the private over the public sphere. In The Politics of Sensibility, however, Markman Ellis argues that sentimental fiction also consciously participated in some of the most keenly contested public controversies of the late eighteenth century, including the emergence of anti-slavery opinion, discourse on the morality of commerce, and the movement for the reformation of prostitutes. By investigating the significance of political material in the fictional text, and by exploring the ways in which the novels themselves take part in historical disputes, Ellis shows that the sentimental novel was a political tool of considerable cultural significance.

Book Synopsis Irish Materialisms by : Colleen Taylor
Download or read book Irish Materialisms written by Colleen Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Materialisms: The Nonhuman and the Making of Colonial Ireland, 1690-1830, is the first book to apply recent trends in new materialist criticism to Ireland. It radically shifts familiar colonial stereotypes of the feminized, racialized cottier according to the Irish peasantry's subversive entanglement with nonhuman materiality. Each of the chapters engages a focused case study of an everyday object in colonial Ireland (coins, flax, spinning wheels, mud, and pigs) to examine how each object's unique materiality contributed to the colonial ideology of British paternalism and afforded creative Irish expression. The main argument of Irish Materialisms is its methodology: of reading literature through the agency of materiality and nonhuman narrative in order to gain a more egalitarian and varied understanding of colonial experience. Irish Materialisms proves that new materialism holds powerful postcolonial potential. Through an intimate understanding of the materiality Irish peasants handled on a daily basis, this book presents a new portrait of Irish character that reflects greater empowerment, resistance, and expression in the oppressed Irish than has been previously recognized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceding that the latter half of the 18th century holds little of true literary value besides the works of Fanny Burney, Ernest Baker nevertheless finds that the period "teems with interest" the public's demand for fiction and the rapidly increasing production of novels reshaped the book market, and "writers who were poor novelists but persons of strong views or feelings" spawned various subgenres worthy of exploration.

Book Synopsis Index to Book Reviews in England, 1749-1774 by : Antonia Forster
Download or read book Index to Book Reviews in England, 1749-1774 written by Antonia Forster and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This index provides valuable information on the vast majority of reviews of poetry, fiction, and drama during the first 25 years of modern, formalized book reviewing in England. Forster introduces readers to the wealth of material in the two major review journals (Monthly Review and Critical Review), the two major magazines (Gentleman’s and London), and 11 other periodicals. She includes in her 3,023 entries information on format, price, and bookseller’s name taken from the books themselves. In her Introduction, Forster surveys some material concerning the reviewers’ public attitude to their self-appointed task to provide a background against which the reviewers’ literary judgments can be examined.
