Book excerpt: ‘I woke to the sight of a hospital ceiling. For that first blissful second, I forgot that I was paralysed.’ On 31 December 2014 Billy Hedderman suffered a catastrophic injury to his spinal cord while body-boarding on the Sunshine Coast, paralysing him almost completely from the neck down. When asked if he would walk again, his doctor simply said, ‘I dunno … maybe.’ Yet, incredibly, within just seven months of his injury, he was able to beat the odds and run a 10km race in under an hour. This is the powerful story of Billy’s recovery and a fascinating account of his service as an Officer in the elite Special Forces unit, the Army Ranger Wing of the Irish Army. It was from this service that he took the never-say-die attitude that helped him prevail against all medical expectations to recover and serve as an Infantry Officer in the Australian Army. It is a story of almost unbelievable personal resilience and mental toughness, which will amaze and inspire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with the rest of the nation and the world, C&T Publishing was shocked and saddened by the terrorist attacks on the United States. We have looked for appropriate ways to commemorate the victims and contribute to relief efforts. Now we are proud to announce a very special project designed to do both. C&T Publishing, in association with Quilts, Inc., is pleased to announce the publication of America from the Heart, a full-color catalog of the quilt exhibit of the same name seen at last Fall's International Quilt Festival. America from the Heart was an incredible, spontaneous exhibit of quilts made by people all over the world in response to the tragedies of September 11. It was an unforgettable exhibit of art quilts, first quilts, and everything in between. These quilts are truly works from the heart - created in the six weeks following September 11 as an expression of the artist's immediate, agonized feelings about the attacks. These works of art are both moving and a true declaration of America's strength and patriotism. America from the Heart includes images of the quilts from the exhibit, along with statements from the quilters who created them. Karey Bresenhan, founder of Quilts, Inc. and organizer of International Quilt Festival, wrote the foreword. C&T Publishing is proud to donate ALL profits from sales of America from the Heart to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund to provide higher education for the surviving spouses and children of September 11 victims.

When Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, she began a vital poor people’s environmental movement, focused on the empowerment of women, that soon spread across Africa. Book excerpt: This early work by William Ernest Henley was originally published in 1903 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'In Hospital' is a collection of poetry he wrote during a three year stay at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and is notable as one of the earliest examples of free verse written in England. William Ernest Henley was born on 23rd August 1849, in Gloucester, England. In 1867, Henley passed the Oxford Local Schools Examination and set off to London to establish himself as a journalist. Unfortunately, his career was frequently interrupted by long stays in hospital due to a diseased right foot which he refused to have amputated. Henley's best-remembered work is his poem "Invictus", written in 1888. It is a passionate and defiant poem, reportedly written as a demonstration of resilience following the amputation of his leg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in the New York Times’ preview of 2019 international literature “A wise, lonely novel . . . [and an] honest reflection of exile.” —The New Yorker In the tradition of Roberto Bolaño’s Savage Detectives, a celebrated classic and heart-wrenching story of a family torn apart by the forces of history, by one of Latin America’s most celebrated writers The late Mario Benedetti’s work was often ranked with “such esteemed Latin American writers as Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes and Julio Cortázar” (The Washington Post) and his novel The Truce has sold millions of copies around the world. His extraordinary novel Springtime in a Broken Mirror revolves around Santiago, a political prisoner in Uruguay, who was jailed after a brutal military coup that saw many of his comrades flee elsewhere. Santiago, feeling trapped, can do nothing but write letters to his family and try to stay sane. Far away, his nine-year-old daughter Beatrice wonders at the marvels of 1970s Buenos Aires, but her grandpa and mother—Santiago’s beautiful, careworn wife, Graciela—struggle to adjust to a life in exile. Published now for the first time in English, Springtime in a Broken Mirror tells with tenderness and fury of the indelible imprint politics leaves on individual lives. Generous and unflinching, it asks whether the broken bonds of family and history can ever truly be mended. Written by one of the masters of the Latin American novel, this is the story of a fractured continent, chronicled through the lives of a single family.
