Book excerpt: Trauma Reporting provides vital information on developing a healthy, professional and respectful relationship with those who choose to tell their stories during times of trauma, distress or grief. Amid a growing demand and need for guidance, this fascinating book is refreshingly simple, engaging and readable, providing a wealth of original insight. As an aspiring or working journalist, how should you work with a grieving parent, a survivor of sexual violence, a witness at the scene of a traumatic event? How should you approach people, interview them and film with them sensitively? Trauma Reporting features guidance from some of the industry’s most successful news correspondents and documentary makers, including Louis Theroux, Lucy Williamson, Tulip Mazumdar, Richard Bilton, Jina Moore and many more, all sharing their experience and expertise. It also features people who chose to tell their sensitive stories to journalists, giving readers invaluable insight into what helped and what harmed. The book also includes: What your interviewees may be going through and how best to respond, by trauma expert Professor Stephen Regel. A discussion on ethics, rules and regulations by Dr Sallyanne Duncan of the University of Strathclyde. Making sure you look after yourself, by Dr Cait McMahon of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. Insightful and innovative, this book is essential for new and established journalists across all media, students of journalism and broadcasting, and anyone who wishes to share the stories of those affected by trauma.

Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1939, the Irish Red Cross Society (IRCS) has played a key part in the medical, social, religious, cultural, political, and diplomatic history of twentieth-century Ireland. Over the decades, the IRCS provided first aid services both in war-time and peace-time, it pioneered public health and social care services, and acted as the state's main agency for international humanitarian relief measures. The IRCS implemented and developed vital public health and social care initiatives that were subsequently developed by the state. During the early 1940s, the Society's formation of a national blood transfusion service laid the foundations for the establishment of a national blood transfusion service. The Society's steering of a national anti-tuberculosis campaign in the 1940s brought the issue of the eradication of TB to the fore and helped to change public attitudes towards the disease. From the 1950s, the IRCS has also been to the fore in caring for the elderly in Ireland, and, for more than two decades, it was effectively the only organization in the state that campaigned and introduced innovative services for the aged. From its inception, the IRCS has been very involved with the settlement and needs of refugees and the provision of international humanitarian relief from Ireland. War-time overseas relief efforts and its post-war work for child refugees earned it significant international recognition and prestige. This history assesses from a national perspective the role, work, and historical impact of the IRC, and examines the important role that this voluntary organization played in modern Ireland.

Book excerpt: In February 1918, Lady Northcliffe, wife of the owner of The Daily Mail and The Times had the idea of raising funds for the Red Cross by asking women to give a pearl as a tribute to the dead and the wounded in the Great War. The plan was to create a necklace which would be auctioned at Christie's. However, the idea grew beyond her greatest expectations. It captured the public's imagination and over the next nine months nearly four thousand pearls poured in not just from Britain but from across the world. The pearls were discussed in drawing rooms, written about in The Times and even debated in Parliament. The story of the Red Cross Pearls is an historical gem which has never been told in detail before. Drawing on the archives of the Red Cross, Christie's and the Victoria and Albert Museum, this book traces the story of the Red Cross Pearl Appeal throughout the eventful year of 1918. Interweaving the story of the campaign with the personal stories behind individual pearls this book provides a snapshot of a world that was changed forever by the war
