Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this book provides an introduction to the history of agriculture in Western Europe, states the case for government intervention and analyses the operation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) during the late 20th Century. It concludes that the costs of the policy fell heavily on the poorer consumers, food prices were artificially high and surpluses sold at a loss on the world markets. In the light of Britain’s departure from the EU and the EU CAP this book, which also examined the prospects for the future has an enduring relevance.

This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee criticises the European Commission's proposed sweeping reforms of the CAP that would see the current complex and bureaucratic system of direct payments replaced by one that could be even worse. These changes include a new tier of environmental conditions, with penalties for farm businesses that do not comply or fail to meet new criteria for 'active' farmers, farm size and number of employees. The Committee sets out the key principles the UK government should promote. The first objective of the CAP should be to maintain and enhance the EU's capacity to produce food with a significant degree of self sufficiency and, in the long term, less reliance on income support from the tax payer. The UK's future food security is threatened by the low profitability of its agriculture. More than half of UK farm businesses would be unprofitable without the support they receive through the CAP. The Committee concludes that direct payments have a place within the CAP for as long as business conditions in agriculture fail to deliver a thriving and profitable industry. The CAP must deliver a competitive and viable agricultural sector that produces safe and high quality food with a lower environmental impact. The UK should press for the EU to argue more strongly for recognition of environmental and animal welfare production standards within trade agreements. The committee also warns that the EU proposal for a multi-tiered single farm payment will require expensive new computer systems and auditing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a stimulating account of agricultural policy which goes beyond a narrow concern with the mechanisms and operation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and instead constructs a broader canvas, developing an assessment of the relationship between national, international and supranational institutions and actors in the agricultural sector. Among the theses covered by the book are: the different national policy styles across Europe in this sector; the evolution of the CAP; safety and regulation, the environment, and technological developments in food production such as genetic engineering.
Book Synopsis New Limits on European Agriculture by : François Duchêne
Download or read book New Limits on European Agriculture written by François Duchêne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until about 1970, Western Europe was regarded as the great food-importing region of the world. Over the next 15 years it also became a major food exporter. This study, originally published in 1985, analyses the expansionary policies of individual nations, as well as those of the Community itself, which have helped produce this momentous reversal of Western Europe’s traditional role. The phenomenon in the international food market is reviewed within the context of the economic and political forces responsible for changes in Western European agriculture during the late 20th Century.
Book Synopsis The Common Agricultural Policy by : Wyn Grant
Download or read book The Common Agricultural Policy written by Wyn Grant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-06-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the Common Agricultural Policy which imposes high costs on taxpayers and consumers yet has proved very difficult to reform. Particular emphasis is placed on new developments affecting the shape of the CAP, including the outcome of the GATT Uruguay Round negotiations, Eastern enlargement, and developments in environmental policy. A distinctive feature of the book is the attention given to situating European agriculture within its global context and in relation to the food processing and agricultural supply industries.

Book excerpt: In October 1977, the Scottish Branch of the Royal Institute of International Affairs established a study group to consider the representation of Scottish interests abroad. The members of the group were drawn from the Scottish universities as well as from business and banking in Scotland. The study began with a series of discussion meetings at which the group as a whole was able to draw on the knowledge and experience of, among others, Mr Alick Buchanan-Smith MP; Mr Stanley Budd, Head of the Edinburgh Office of the Commission of the European Communities; Mr J. Allan Stewart, Scottish Secretary of the Confederation of British Industry; Mr A.S. Halford-MacLeod of the Scottish Council (Development and Industry); and senior officials of the Scottish Office. Individual members of the group then undertook a programme of interviews with representatives of the fishing industry, in particular Mr Gilbert Buchan and Mr David Aitchison of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, Mr James Lovie of the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation Ltd and Mr Robert Allan of the Scottish Section of the British Fishing Federation; with representatives of the agriculture industry, notably, Mr Michael Burnett of the National Farmers' Union of Scotland, Mr Dermot Gunn of the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society and Mr A.F. Roney-Dougal of the Scottish Landowners' Federation; and with representatives of Scottish local authorities and the relevant departments of the Scottish Office.
