Book Synopsis The Chinese War by : Lieutenant John Ouchterlony
Download or read book The Chinese War written by Lieutenant John Ouchterlony and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-11-16 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable account of the first of the 19th century 'Opium Wars' between Britain and China for control of the debilitating and dangerous but highly profitable drugs trade. The author, an Indian Army officer of the Madras Engineers, witnessed many of the events he describes. The action moves from Hong Kong, to Canton, Shanghai and finally Nanking, where the outgunned Chinese are compelled to sign a treaty ending the conflict. The author is critical of the 'ignorance' and 'cruelty' of the Chinese character, but praises their courage and cultural artefacts - such as the Great Wall and Nanking's Porcelain Tower. In his account of the Chinese astonishment at such western technology as steam-ships and horse-drawn guns he reflects the reality of a vast but backward civilisation encountering the fruits of the industrial revolution it would one day enthusiastically emulate. Well-illustrated with 53 engravings from original drawings by the author, and six maps.
Download or read book China Station written by Mark Felton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Author, who lives in Shanghai, sets out to demonstrate that the British military has been at the forefront of many of the great changes that have swept China over the last two centuries.??He devotes chapters to the various wars, military adventures and rebellions that regularly punctuated Sino/British relationships since the 1st Opium War 1839-1842. This classic example of Imperial intervention saw the establishment of Hong Kong and Shanghai as key trading centres. The Second Opium War and the Taiping and Boxer Rebellions saw the advancement of British influence despite determined but unsuccessful efforts by the Chinese to loosen the grip of Western domination. The Royal Navys might ensured that, by gunboat diplomacy, trading rights and new posts were established and great fortunes made.??But in the 1940s the British grossly underestimated Japanese military might and intentions with disastrous results. After the Second World War the British returned to find that the Americans had supplanted them. The Communists victory in the Civil War sealed British and Western fates and, while Hong Kong remained under British control until 1997, the end of British rule was almost inevitable. But the handover was a masterly piece of pragmatic capitalism and the former Colony remains an economic powerhouse with strong British influence.

Book Synopsis The Chinese War by : John Ouchterlony
Download or read book The Chinese War written by John Ouchterlony and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since April 1840, China saw herself fight one of the most gruesome wars ever in her history. The British had decided to expand further eastwards. And this time they had fixed their attention on China. But the Chinese too, a class of exceptional warriors, had decided not to give in without a fight to the very finish. And that is what makes this war an all-time classic. Not only did the author, Lieutenant John Ouchterlony, FGS of the Madras Army account for every formation and every foray by both armies during this war, he also captured the images of this historical event through some beautiful illustration, fifty-three of which have been recounted in this book. Surely, a pleasant read and a sight for the eyes.First published in 1844.

Download or read book Liberal Barbarism written by E. Ringmar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Liberal Barbarism, Erik Ringmar sets out to explain the 1860 destruction of Yuanmingyuan - the Chinese imperial palace north-west of Beijing - at the hands of British and French armies. Yuanmingyuan was the emperor's own theme-park, a perfect world, a vision of paradise, which housed one of the greatest collections of works of art ever assembled. The intellectual puzzle which the book addresses concerns why the Europeans, bent on "civilizing" the Chinese, engaged in this act of barbarism. The answer is provided through an analysis of the performative aspect of the confrontation between Europe and China, focusing on the differences in the way their respective international systems were conceptualized. Ringmar reveals that the destruction of Yuanmingyuan represented the Europeans' campaign to "shock and awe" the Chinese, thereby forcing them to give up their way of organizing international relations. The contradictions which the events of 1860 exemplify - the contradiction between civilization and barbarism - is a theme running through all European (and North American) relations with the rest of the world since, including, most recently, the US war in Iraq.
