Book excerpt: Self-initiation is killing our young men. Without strong mentors, boys are walking alone into a wilderness of conflicting messages about who they should be as men. It's no wonder that our sons are confused about what the world expects from them and what they should expect of themselves. The Intentional Father is the antidote. This concise book is filled with practical steps to help men raise sons of consequence--young men who know what they believe, know who they are, and will stand up against the negative cultural trends of our day. Jon Tyson lays out a clear path for fathers and sons that includes specific activities, rites of passage, and significant "marking moments" that can be customized to fit any family. It's not enough to hope our sons will become good men. We need them to be good at being men. This book shows how fathers, grandfathers, and other male mentors can lead the way.

Book excerpt: Bringing Up Father was an American comic strip created by cartoonist George McManus. Characters and storyThe humor centers on an immigrant Irishman named Jiggs, a former hod carrier who came into wealth in the United States by winning a million dollars in a sweepstakes.[2] Now nouveau-riche, he still longs to revert to his former working class habits and lifestyle. His constant attempts to sneak out with his old gang of boisterous, rough-edged pals, eat corned beef and cabbage (known regionally as "Jiggs dinner") and hang out at the local tavern were often thwarted by his formidable, social-climbing (and rolling-pin wielding) harridan of a wife, Maggie, their lovely young daughter, Nora and infrequently their lazy son Ethelbert later known as just Sonny. The strip deals with "lace-curtain Irish", with Maggie as the middle-class Irish American desiring assimilation into mainstream society in counterpoint to an older, more raffish "shanty Irish" sensibility represented by Jiggs. Her lofty goal-frustrated in nearly every strip-is to bring father (the lowbrow Jiggs) "up" to upper class standards, hence the title, Bringing Up Father. The occasional malapropisms and left-footed social blunders of these upward mobiles were gleefully lampooned in vaudeville, popular song, and formed the basis for Bringing Up Father.[3] The strip presented multiple perceptions of Irish Catholic ethnics during the early 20th century. Through the character Jiggs, McManus gave voice to their anxieties and aspirations. Varied interpretations of McManus's work often highlight difficult issues of ethnicity and class, such as the conflicts over assimilation and social mobility that second- and third-generation immigrants confronted. McManus took a middle position, which aided ethnic readers in becoming accepted in American society without losing their identity.[4] A cross-country tour that the characters took in September 1939 into 1940 gave the strip a big promotional boost and raised its profile in the cities they visitedThe comic reprints from Escamilla Comics are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old. These books are constantly updated with the best version available.

Book excerpt: The author of Why Men Are the Way They Are demolishes conventional wisdom about the nature of fatherhood and shows how the courts, media, and government create subtle, immensely powerful undercurrents that separate men from their children. Anyone who cares about the nature of fatherhood today, anyone interested in the legal and emotional issues that divide fathers from children, anyone viewing fatherhood from the perspective of a journalist, social worker, or lawmaker, and any single, married, or divorced parent needs to read this thoughtful and engaging book.Dr. Warren Farrell argues--with surprising and convincing evidence drawn from court cases, law-enforcement records, national statistics, and therapeutic case studies--that the judicial system, media, and government often make dads "the enemy." Fathers enjoy no parenting rights within the legal system and even in other, less typically confrontational arenas--such as the public education system--a wide range of unreported forces divide fathers from their children. For all its explosive conclusions, Father and Child Reunion ultimately calls for a rejoining of families and of children with parents who can care for them. Dr. Farrell has written what may be the most significant book on a vital issue facing men, parents, and families today.

That's not a bad word in my vocabulary. And he's the reason. Fundamentals are worth dying for and fighting for. But that fight has killed the Song in the hearts of many people. Book excerpt: Jolie Hoang grew up as one of ten children, part of a loving, prosperous Vietnamese family. All that changed when the communists took over in 1975; the family was harassed and lived in constant fear of being sent to the dreaded new economic zone. Desperate to ensure the family's safety and to provide a future for his children, Jolie's father arranged three separate escapes. The first was a failure that cost most of their fortune, but the second was successful -- six of his children reached Indonesia and ultimately settled in Canada. The father and his youngest daughter drowned during the disastrous third attempt. Alternately told from the author's perspective and that of her father's ghost, Three Funerals for My Father is a poignant story of love, grief and resilience that spans two continents and fifty years. It serves as both an intimate story of one family, and a testament to the collective experience of hundreds of thousands of boat people and millions of refugees.

Book excerpt: If the family unit is a fundamental building block of society, the nucleus of that unit is the father, and when he causes damage, the ripples affect everyone. Drawing from decades of first-hand experience and a wealth of academic research, this book delves into the depths of the catastrophe that is fatherlessness, laying it open from an academic and personal perspective, and presenting a thorough, practical solution. The book captures the core of The World Needs A Father's Master Trainer course in a format that is easy to access and digest, but it is also an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to be a better husband, father or mentor. It will challenge you, convict you, and encourage you to be the best father you can be within your context. While it is rooted in Christian ethics and values, the truth and practical value that it expresses is just as relevant to people of a secular inclination, adherents to other faiths, or those who subscribe to no particular faith at all. This version has been updated and expanded to include new research, provide deeper insights, and includes more practical tool to help you bring heaven home.
