Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameron Leon is a newly-hired worker for the Forster Foundation, a world-wide charitable organization led by a reclusive billionaire. To get the job, Cameron has to join a church. However, Cameron, still mourning the recent death of his brother Peter, decides he will only pretend to "get saved." In the process, he impersonates not only a Christian, but on occasion his brother. Cameron continues to receive tearful phone calls from Peter's widow, Cecelia, who wants to hear her late husband's voice. Cameron, a born mimic like his brother, flawlessly impersonates him but feels the need for a personal kind of cleansing. In the end, Cameron discovers not only how many faces he has, but how many there are among the people around him. In the end, he finds he has been impersonating someone - or Someone - all along. According to Thornton, BRILLIANT DISGUISES grew from a longing to see the inner life of a Christian in a fictional setting. But the only way to make such a familiar setting appear unfamiliar to Christian readers was to have the story told by someone posing as one. Thornton says, "Probably anyone who has attended an evangelical church, or any church for that matter, has a story of someone who volunteers for everything, is there for every service, has been a model of prayer and devotion for what seems like generations. It could be the Sunday School director or the lady who helps out in the kitchen or the organist. Then one Sunday, they come forward during the dedication and announce that they've never felt they were saved. I wondered how that could happen, and I figured it would help if we were dealing with a character who was a born mimic."

Book excerpt: Brilliant Disguises: Antique Love Songs for the Boss: 1978-1995 By: Ms. Jennifer Jazz Brilliant Disguises: Antique Love Songs for the Boss: 1978-1995 was written by a single mother who had a baby and was growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The music that was created at that particular time has never been replicated. It will never be duplicated. The artists who painted these visions gave their lives for the music. Some gave all—in the music world, too, not just on the battlefield. Their lyrics are handed down to generation after generation. Brilliant Disguises: Antique Love Songs for the Boss: 1978-1995 was part of that creative time in the United States. Ms. Jennifer Jazz carried her notebook around for 30 years, and this is what she was doing.

He's conquered the seven seas, hunted Moby Dick and rescued Charles Darwin; now the Pirate Captain and his crew are off on another adventure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many readers know Stephen King for his early works of horror, from his fiction debut Carrie to his blockbuster novels The Shining, The Stand, and Misery, among others. While he continues to be a best-selling author, King’s more recent fiction has not received the kind of critical attention that his books from the 1970s and 1980s enjoyed. Recent novels like Duma Key and 1/22/63 have been marginalized and, arguably, cast aside as anomalies within the author’s extensive canon. In Stephen King’s Contemporary Classics: Reflections on the Modern Master of Horror, Philip L. Simpson and Patrick McAleer present a collection of essays that analyze, assess, and critique King’s post-1995 compositions. Purposefully side-stepping studies of earlier work, these essays are arranged into three main parts: the first section examines five King novels published between 2009 and 2013, offering genuinely fresh scholarship on King; the second part looks at the development of King’s distinct brand of horror; the third section departs from probing the content of King’s writing and instead focuses on King’s process. By concentrating on King’s most recent writings, this collection offers provocative insights into the author’s work, featuring essays on Dr. Sleep, Duma Key, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Joyland, Under the Dome, and others. As such, Stephen King’s Contemporary Classics will appeal to general fans of the author’s work as well as scholars of Stephen King and modern literature.

It won’t be long before Siena becomes America’s new favorite spy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second chance . . . all of us have needed one at some point in our lives. As children, we beg our parents to give us "just one more chance." As adults, we turn our pleadings to God for another opportunity, just to start over again. In this revised and updated version of The God of Second Chances, author Stephen Arterburn takes us through his own journey of pleasure-seeking and ambition to a life-changing encounter with the reality of God's grace. Arterburn is painfully honest, sharing his personal experiences with sexual immorality that culminated in the abortion of his child. It was then, desperate and at the end of himself, that Arterburn cried out to God for a second chance. Through his willingness to share his struggles, Arterburn helps us to confront our failures and reach out for God's restorative touch. With a gentle humor, he encourages us to look beyond ourselves and discover the joy in serving others and investing in the things that really matter. In doing so, we will learn what it is to be restored to God through unconditional surrender and receive healing from the scars left by our own mistakes.

For over three decades, Springsteens musicwith his trademark poetic lyrics and his ability to find glory in the struggles of everyday lifehas attracted fans and critics from across the globe. In this book, author Jeffrey Symynkywicz shows that a large part of Springsteens enduring popularity is the deep sense in which his music connects to something essential to human experience. Springsteens music, Symynkywicz suggests, helps make sense of the many threads of our livesincluding our experiences of sin and redemption and of faith and hope. With a clear and inviting style, Symynkywicz treats each of Springsteens albums as a chapter, exploring the history and context of Springsteens music and the ways in which his songs express these spiritual themes.

Book excerpt: To love is to lose, life's ugly truth integral, terrible part of life, death preys on all, a fate worse than itself, sometimes it gets those closest to us. Soaring and sinking is a gripping visual poetry collection that narrates a complete story through the enmeshed ensemble of 24 poems of how the grieving heart sinks and soars, only to sink again. It has an underlying theme of deep melancholy and grapples with difficult topics like hyper independence, depression, loneliness, suicidal thoughts and how these compound and confound the experience of grief, loss and the life after. It strives to find meaning in this fleeting flimsy existence we all share as humans and gives a satisfying conclusion to this underlying, old-as-time question. A product of deep emotional turmoil, it brings a unique perspective to the experience of grief that is as common as life itself.
