It provides a comprehensive guide to the use of pesticides and the efforts of manufacturers to develop pesticides that are both effective and environmentally benign. The difficulties and hazards associated with their applications, their environmental effects, particularly in wate and the control of storage, uses and residue levels in non-agricultural habitat and in foodstuffs are also discussed.
Book Synopsis Molluscs as Crop Pests by : G. M. Barker
Download or read book Molluscs as Crop Pests written by G. M. Barker and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mollusc species currently constitute a major threat to sustainable agriculture. This threat is associated with cultivation of new crops, intensification of agricultural production systems and the spread through human trade and travel of species adapted to these modified environments. In some crops their significance is only now becoming apparent with the decline in the importance of other pest groups which can be effectively controlled. The book focuses on: toxicology of chemicals; deployment of molluscicides in baits; specific crop situations worldwide; current pest status of mollusc species and progress towards development of solutions.
Book Synopsis Pest and Disease Management Handbook by : David V. Alford
Download or read book Pest and Disease Management Handbook written by David V. Alford and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pest and Disease Management Handbook updates the 3rd edition of the Pest and Disease Control Handbook (1989). The structure of this important new book differs in several respects, acknowledging the advances that have been made in integrated crop management and the trends towards the more rational use of pesticides. Fully revised and up-to-date, the book commences with a new introductory chapter covering the principles of pest and disease management. Following chapters, each written by acknowledged experts in the field, cover a group of major temperate northern hemisphere crops. As well as comprehensive details of pest and disease management strategies, each chapter also includes a classification scheme for the cited pests and diseases. This important publication is a vital tool for all those involved in the crop protection / agrochemical industry including business managers, entomologists, agricultural scientists, plant pathologists and those studying and teaching BASIS courses. As an important reference guide for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying agricultural sciences, applied entomology and crop protection, copies of the book should be available on the shelves of all research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught. Pest and Disease Management Handbook is published for the British Crop Protection Council (BCPC) by Blackwell Science. BCPC is a registered charity having the principal objective of promoting the development, use and understanding of effective and sustainable crop protection practice. Dr David V Alford, based in Cambridge, UK, is a member of the BCPC board, with many years' experience working as a government entomologist.

Book Synopsis Aphids as Crop Pests, 2nd Edition by : Helmut F van Emden
Download or read book Aphids as Crop Pests, 2nd Edition written by Helmut F van Emden and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are among the major global pest groups, causing serious economic damage to many food and commodity crops in most parts of the world. This revision and update of the well-received first edition published ten years ago reflects the expansion of research in genomics, endosymbionts and semiochemicals, as well as the shift from control of aphids with insecticides to a more integrated approach imposed by increasing resistance in the aphids and government restrictions on pesticides. The book remains a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on the biology of aphids, the various methods of controlling them and the progress of integrated pest management as illustrated by ten case histories.
Book Synopsis Insect Pheromone Research by : R.T. Carde
Download or read book Insect Pheromone Research written by R.T. Carde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the "First International Symposium on Insect Pheromones," which was held at Wageningen, The Netherlands, from March 6 to March 11, 1994. Eighty participants from 17 countries attended the symposium, which turned out to be a unique forum for the exchange of the latest worldwide findings on insect pheromones, an opportunity to discuss and debate unsettled issues, and a mechanism to define new directions in pheromone research and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. The meeting comprised five sessions representing the breadth of disciplinary interest in pheromones, a typical charac teristic of this research area. In the sessions the following topics were presented: (1) control of pheromone production (organized by W. L. Roelofs), (2) sensory processing of pheromone signals (T. L. Payne), (3) neuroethology of pheromone mediated responses (T. C. Baker), (4) use of pheromones in direct control (A. K. Minks and R. T. Card6), and (5) evolution of pheromone communication (c. LOfstedt). All sessions started with a series of 30-minute lectures, after which ample time was reserved for discussion. In each session some participants were asked to serve as discussants and to initiate and stimulate discussion, and a rapporteur was recruited to make notes of these discussions and to summarize the general trends emerging from the session. The general program ming of the symposium was in the hands of R. T. Carde, A. K. Minks, and T. L. Payne.

Book Synopsis Multitrophic Interactions in Terrestrial Systems by : A. C. Gange
Download or read book Multitrophic Interactions in Terrestrial Systems written by A. C. Gange and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multitrophic interactions are now recognised as being of the utmost importance in understanding the complexity of the natural world. However, their complex nature had often been a barrier to their study as they require research teams composed of workers often with very disparate interests. This book therefore takes a multidisciplinary approach to complex interactions across many trophic levels and includes authors from disciplines as diverse as mycology, entomology, nematology, population ecology and theoretical ecology. Throughout, the direct and indirect interactions between organisms from different trophic levels are emphasised in comprehensive reviews, bringing a fresh, collaborative approach to community ecology. The book is ideal for those seeking an overview of our understanding of mulittrophic interactions as well as directions for future research.
