Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music in the Nordic Countries by : Fabian Holt
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music in the Nordic Countries written by Fabian Holt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries, a group of countries spanning a large area of northern Europe and the North Atlantic, present unique natural and cultural environments in which popular music has come to play a significant role. Research on the region's music has largely followed national narratives and ignored more complex geographies and transcultural issues. This first handbook of music in the Nordic countries explores the significance of popular music in the history of the region, with implications for broader debates about the region's uniqueness and its future. The chapters highlight music's place in media and tourism industries, in sustaining exotic images of the North, but also in more serious issues such as racism and environmentalism.
Book Synopsis Fashioned in the North by : Anna Dahlgren
Download or read book Fashioned in the North written by Anna Dahlgren and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume showcases new examples - previously untold stories of images, photographers, publications, and institutions - partly unknown outside the Nordic countries. The authors examine the reasons for and implications of this underexposure, taking on a photographic metaphor. While simultaneously challenging previously taken-for-granted ideas of the center and periphery in this field, the book also widens the study of fashion photography. Notably, the hybridity of approaches may enrich future studies of fashion photography. In Fashioned in the North, fashion photography is viewed as a transnational phenomenon and a material object, as well as a medium that is part of a media system and a result of archival systems and history writings. Furthermore, the book displays how studies of fashion photography can be so much more than stories of a few names and iconic images or studies of individual and periodic style. Indeed, the study of fashion photography may be a prism through which we can uncover cultural, social, economic, and ideological aspects of society at present and in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Casting Homeward, writer, naturalist, and educator Steve Ramirez takes the reader on a physical and philosophical journey to some of the most legendary rivers and wild landscapes in America. Imbued with fly-fishing throughout, this journey will seek to explore what makes certain places feel magical and meaningful. How do we define “iconic” when considering wild places that have seemingly held the ability to restore our souls and fill them with feelings of peace, belonging, awe, and gratitude? Each of these chosen regions has been considered an iconic destination for anyone who yearns for the wild places that are distinctly American. From the songbird-filled hardwoods of New England to the jack-pine Northwoods where wolves still sing in the night. From the Yellowstone Valley where bison feed next to tumbling trout streams to Bristol Bay where brown bears compete with anglers for salmon, steelhead, and leopard spotted rainbow trout. And each of these destinations has served as the birthplace of American literature that is intrinsically connected to the landscape and inspired by a love of the outdoors. In Casting Homeward, these legendary places will give us new stories—the stories of this century that are yet untold.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Jewish Writing in Sweden by : Peter Stenberg
Download or read book Contemporary Jewish Writing in Sweden written by Peter Stenberg and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together for the first time the works of Jewish authors writing in Swedish, who describe the special circumstances confronting Jews in the twentieth century in Sweden and Scandinavia. During the Second World War, Sweden?s small, long-established, and well-assimilated Jewish community was never subject to the open and ultimately fatal ethnic identification that most European Jews suffered. Older and middle-aged Swedish-born Jewish authors tend to think of themselves only as Swedes. Within the last few decades, however, Sweden has become an immigrant country, and a younger generation writes from a different perspective. Twenty of the twenty-two authors represented in this anthology are still very active, and many of the pieces were written in the last fifteen years. Each work chosen illustrates some aspect of Jewish identity in Sweden, either today or in the course of a century in which Sweden played a crucial, controversially neutral role in a war that had a catastrophic impact on Europe and led to the near-annihilation of the European Jews. This volume provides the complex historical framework in which these events occurred and elucidates the role played by the largest Scandinavian country within it. Contemporary Jewish Writing in Sweden brings together superb work by major writers in one of Europe's foremost national literatures and includes the first English translation of an excerpt from Peter Weiss's recently discovered 1957 Swedish novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [A] searing memoir. . . . An enduring, indeed universal, story. Robert Taylor, The Boston Globe Summoned with her mother to Gestapo headquarters in 1943, fourteen-year-old Cordelia Edvardson was given a terrible choice: to acknowledge her secret Jewish heritage and suffer the consequences or to see her mother charged with treason. Burned Child Seeks the Fire is the true story of the love between this mother and daughter, and a piercing example of the tragedies wrought by Nazi Germany. "A lacerating, beautifully translated memoir." Publishers Weekly, starred review "Mesmerizing. . . . [Has] the concise unreality of a horrifying fairy tale." Thomas Frick, Los Angeles Times Book Review "Behind [Edvardson's] deceptively simple prose is a complex and tragic story." Judith Bolton-Fasman, Newsday "Cordelia Edvardson's defiant tone challenges us to eschew simplified encounters with the literature and experiences of Holocaust survivors." Paul H. Hamburg, Jewish Book World "To see the horrors of the Holocaust through a child's eye is to experience hell. Cordelia Edvardson's astonishing story captures, with a terrifying reality, a child's response to the myriad atrocities of the Nazis and their murderous regime. Burned Child Seeks the Fire is compelling, horrifying, poetic in its intensity." Deborah Peifer, Bay Area Reporter

Book Synopsis Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey From Unknown DJ to Small-time DJ by : Harold Heath
Download or read book Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey From Unknown DJ to Small-time DJ written by Harold Heath and published by Velocity Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by former DJ/producer Harold Heath, ‘Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey From Unknown DJ to Small-time DJ’ is a biographical account of a DJ career defined by a deep love of music and a shallow amount of success. From the days of vinyl, when DJs were often also glass-collectors, to the era of megastar stadium EDM, it’s a journey of 30 odd years on a low-level, economy-class rollercoaster through the ups and downs of an ever-changing music industry. ‘Long Relationships’ is a love letter to DJing and to every small-town DJ who never made it to the big time but whose life was enriched and improved by DJing anyway. It’s packed with tales of gigs, clubs, raves, warehouses, music, record production and record deals, low-rent international travel, shady promoters, dodgy club security, magical dance floor moments and much more. If you ever DJed, if you ever lost yourself on a dance floor, or if you ever simply fell in love with the potential contained within a dark basement, a strobe and a sound system, then this story is your story.
