Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As much a sword as a shield, Brief-Writing Master Plan offers an unparalleled and unprecedented curriculum of written advocacy. It’s a sparkling, alchemical blend of doctrine, ethics, and skills. It recruits linguistics, logic, psychology, rhetoric, and semantics into the arsenal of learned advocacy. It contains the rhetorical wisdom of ages, pages, and sages. An advocate files a brief to persuade the judge to decide the lawsuit in favor of the advocate’s client. The keyword is persuade. Too often, advocates forget this and write to please themselves. They address themselves instead of the court. They write in chest-thumping prose and style. Advocates will do well to keep in mind that in advocacy, all that counts is persuading the judiciary. Hence, Brief-Writing Master Plan responds to the judicial wish list for advocates’ writing style and substance. This book is a transformative resource with the potential to accelerate court proceedings by easing judicial burdens and caseloads. A sober reflection on the advocate’s duty to the court, Brief-Writing Master Plan encourages professional candor, decency, and honesty. Writing as taught in this book will surely propel you to the top 1% of the global legal profession and secure your legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves to shed a light on the position of women in media and how these institutions shape the women’s contributions to national development. The authors argue that women are unsung heroes, driving the growth of nations. Nevertheless, their stories are seldom told, they are often stereotyped and marginalized within society. This form of discrimination serves to take away the voices of women in all social stratas, especially in the developing nations of Africa. It is little wonder that there is gender inequality, gender bias, and gender injustice in society. This book highlights literature which may be used to actualize gender equality and social justice for women. By creating a discussion around gender, society will begin to understand the value and importance of women in engineering development. Women are vital to social change.

Book excerpt: The Slave Trade and Culture in the Bight of Biafra dissects and explains the structure, dramatic expansion, and manifold effects of the slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. By showing that the rise of the Aro merchant group was the key factor in trade expansion, G. Ugo Nwokeji reinterprets why and how such large-scale commerce developed in the absence of large-scale centralized states. The result is the first study to link the structure and trajectory of the slave trade in a major exporting region to the expansion of a specific African merchant group - among other fresh insights into Atlantic Africa's involvement in the trade - and the most comprehensive treatment of Atlantic slave trade in the Bight of Biafra. The fundamental role of culture in the organization of trade is highlighted, transcending the usual economic explanations in a way that complicates traditional generalizations about work, domestic slavery, and gender in pre-colonial Africa.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book examines the relationship between the pattern of party formation in Nigeria and a mode of social, political and economic behaviour Richard Joseph terms 'prebendalism'. He demonstrates the centrality in the Nigerian polity of the struggle to control and exploit public office and argues that state power is usually viewed by Nigerians as an array of prebends, the appropriation of which provides access to the state treasury and to control over remunerative licenses and contracts. In addition, the abiding desire for a democratic political system is frustrated by the deepening of ethnic, linguistic and regional identities. By exploring the ways in which individuals at all social levels contribute to the maintenance of these practices, the book provides an analysis of the impediments to constitutional democracy that is also relevant to the study of other nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years I watched many work of arts take place and saw how those concerned took care of their problems. There I realized that management is truly an artistic work. A case in point: In the city of Calabar in the Cross River State of Nigeria, there was a tailoring company that employed only men, but the irony is that they made womens dresses. There were other womens tailoring companies managed by women, but for some reason, most women preferred buying from the only tailoring company managed by men in the city of Calabar. During the companys general meeting, an employee stood up and asked the company to employ a few women in the interest of progress. Many employees objected to the request that women be asked to come forward and fill out forms and be subjected to the same rigorous interview as any qualified candidate who wants to be employed; they suggested that the company may be moving toward the production of substandard dresses. The author of the idea refused to take no for an answer, because the management always turned down women candidates. A few months later, the president and the chief executive officer (CEO) joined the crusade of employing women. Months after the president and CEO joined in, two women were employed, and they brought in their own fresh perspectives, including dresses for big women (whom they never called fat women). About ten years later, there were more than seven branches of the company, most of which were managed by women. I think life itself is a container of arts and strategies. This book is made up of cases, artistic expressions, and strategic maneuverings to enable my readers to understand the core concepts of effective management.
