Book Synopsis Spirit of Resistance by : Jeroen Dewulf
Download or read book Spirit of Resistance written by Jeroen Dewulf and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to offer a complete story of the extraordinary proliferation of Dutch clandestine literature under the Nazi occupation. Clandestine literature was published in all countries under Nazi occupation, but nowhere else did it flourish as it did in the Netherlands. This raises important questions: What was the content of this literature? What were the risks of writing, printing, selling, and buying it? And why the Netherlands? Traditionally, the combative Dutch "spirit of resistance" has been cited, a reaction not only to German oppression but to German propaganda: while the Germans hoped to build bonds with their "Germanic" Dutch "brothers," clandestine literature insisted on their incompatibility. However, when reading clandestine literature, one should not forget that this "spirit of resistance" came rather late and did not prevent the transportation of seventy-three percent of the Netherlands' Jewish population to Nazi death camps -- the largest percentage in Western Europe. The Dutch case is complex: while the country proved to be remarkably resistant to Nazi propaganda, little was done to prevent the actual execution of Nazi policies. The complete story of Dutch clandestine literature therefore combines resistance and complicity, victory and defeat, pride and shame. Jeroen Dewulf is Queen Beatrix Professor of Dutch Studies in the Department of German at the University of California, Berkeley.
Download or read book Van Loon written by Cornelis Van Minnen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon his death, Hendrik van Loon was described in The Times obituary as 'one of the most engaging products of the marriage between Holland and the United States'. One of FDR's true and closest friends, van Loon emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States at age 20, in 1902. Working as a historian, journalist, illustrator, and radio commentator, van Loon immersed himself in American cultural life from the 1920s through the '40s, until his death three months before D-Day. Van Loon's professional relationships and friendships with such distinguished persons as Sinclair Lewis, Van Wyck Brooks, H. L. Mencken, Albert Einstein, Herbert Hoover, and Fiorello La Guardia bolster his place as a celebrity of his times. This biography is an exciting and nuanced portrait of a man deeply involved in American cultural life in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Crossing Cultures brings together scholars in the field of reception and translation studies to chart the individual and institutional agencies that determined the reception of Anglophone authors in the Dutch and Belgian literary fields in the course of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The essays offer a variety of angles from which nineteenth-century literary dynamics in the Low Countries can be studied. The first two parts discuss the reception of Anglophone literature in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively, while the third part focuses exclusively on the Dutch translation of women writers.

Download or read book Art and the Artist in Society written by Jane Elizabeth Alberdeston and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and Artist in Society is a compilation of essays that examine the nexus between artists, the art they create and society. These essays consider how art has changed its form and role both to accommodate newer trends and to fully participate in society. Divided into six thematic sections, the book examines the works of a diverse group of artists working in a range of art forms, such as writers Milan Kundera and Judith Ortiz Cofer, filmmakers Humberto Solás and Walter Salles, performers/photographer Daniel Joseph Martínez and feminist-activists Suzanne Lacy and Leslie Labowitz. The analyses of the work of these artists and other artists offer readers an opportunity to explore a number of important issues in art today, such as the representation of the Other, the exploration of alternative sources of knowledge and the construction of the self. For the array of works it analyzes, this book offers fascinating insights into the art and the artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Download or read book A History of the Encyclopaedia of Islam written by Peri Bearman and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of The Encyclopaedia of Islam is the back story of the decisions that shaped the preeminent reference work in the field of Islamic Studies and of the labor that went into it, a story that has not yet been told. It is a record of a monumental, century-long project, undertaken by the greatest scholars of its time; of friendships and rivalries; and of the extraordinary circumstances in which it took shape. As a product of and a contribution to a century's evolving view of Islamic history, civilization, and religion, this history sheds light onto the world of academia, of the individual scholars who contributed to the encyclopedia's success, and of a time-Europe before and after two world wars-and an age of publishing that dramatically changed in its lifetime.
Book Synopsis Neue Sachlichkeit and Avant-Garde by : Ralf Grüttemeier
Download or read book Neue Sachlichkeit and Avant-Garde written by Ralf Grüttemeier and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the aims of the book is to shed more light on the notion Neue Sachlichkeit in its appearance in a variety of fields as painting, architecture, music, photography and literature, in order to get a clearer idea of its scope. Several contributions will do so by analysing the heterogeneity in the use of the term concerning its function in the fight for recognition in the art-fields around 1930 - in other words, Neue Sachlichkeit will be analysed as a positioning strategy. Especially its participation in the broader discourse on modernity, as well as its international and intermedial dimension will be highlighted, often using the historical avant-garde as point of reference. From this perspective, the present volume wants to be read as a plea for a differentiated description of the many shared aspects and some differences between the avant-garde and Neue Sachlichkeit.

Book excerpt: In May 1970 the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands was celebrated in the King's Library of the British Museum with an ex hibition of Dutch clandestine printing. The books shown were part of the considerable collection assembled in the intervening years by Miss Anna Simoni in the course of her official duties in the Department. It has been decided that the size and quality of this collection justify the publication of a catalogue. For this, and the full indexes which have been provided, credit is also due to Miss Simoni. The British Library Board wishes to express its deep appreciation of the generosity of the donors and helpers whose names are mentioned in the introduction. K. B. Gardner Principal Keeper Department of Printed Books INTRODUCTION The Second World War saw German rule extended over many countries where most of the people were fundamentally opposed to the Nazi ide ology. In all these enslaved nations Resistance movements sprang up and they took various forms, one of the most important of which was the work of the illegal press. In the Netherlands, as elsewhere, under ground newspapers were of the greatest political importance. At the same time a large number of pamphlets helped to strengthen the peo ple's will to continue the struggle and to form public opinion on future developments.
