Download or read book Armies and Ecosystems in Premodern Europe written by Sander Govaerts and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the ecosystem concept as his starting point, the author examines the complex relationship between premodern armed forces and their environment at three levels: landscapes, living beings, and diseases. The study focuses on Europe's Meuse Region, well-known among historians of war as a battleground between France and Germany. By analyzing soldiers' long-term interactions with nature, this book engages with current debates about the ecological impact of the military, and provides new impetus for contemporary armed forces to make greater effort to reduce their environmental footprint.

Book excerpt: This book is the first thorough and overdue biography of one of the giants of science in the twentieth century, Jan Hendrik Oort. His fundamental contributions had a lasting effect on the development of our insight and a profound influence on the international organization and cooperation in his area of science and on the efforts and contribution of his native country. This book aims at describing Oort's life and works in the context of the development of his branch of science and as a tribute to a great scientist in a broader sense. The astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort from the Netherlands was founder of studies of the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way Galaxy, initiator of radioastronomy and the European Southern Observatory, and an important contributor to many areas of astronomy, from the study of comets to the universe on the largest scales.
Download or read book Emerging Memory written by Paul Bijl and published by Heritage and Memory Studies. This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch commentators repeatedly claim that their nation has forgotten its violent colonial past. In this compelling study, however, Paul Bijl demonstrates that photographs of colonial atrocities have appeared consistently in the Dutch public sphere and remain widely available in print, on television, and online. The nation, he argues, has not forgotten; rather, the Dutch have failed to absorb the meaning of these ubiquitous images and the scenes they depict. Ultimately, Bijl illuminates the shadowy zone between remembering and forgetting a zone populated by histories that do not correspond to the narratives we construct about the past.

Book Synopsis The Young Vermeer by : Edwin Buijsen
Download or read book The Young Vermeer written by Edwin Buijsen and published by W Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is world-famous for his scenes of daily life, such as a kitchen maid pouring milk, a woman having a music lesson, or a lady writing a letter. However, when Vermeer began painting around the age of 21, he focused primarily on traditional subjects derived from the Bible and classical mythology. Not only do these early works differ greatly from his later paintings in terms of subject matter, they also differ in style. The exhibition unites three paintings from the beginning of Vermeer's artistic career: the Mauritshuis' Diana and her nymphs of c. 1653-1654, is joined by Christ in the house of Martha and Mary (c. 1655) from the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, and The Procuress (1656) from the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden. These three paintings afford an image of the artist seeking his own style. All three paintings have recently been restored."
Book Synopsis Adriaen Brouwer by : Karolien de Clippel
Download or read book Adriaen Brouwer written by Karolien de Clippel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adriaen Brouwer was born around 1604 in Oudenaarde. Recent archival research has now confirmed this. At an early age, Brouwer moved to the Northern Netherlands, where he spent time in Gouda, Haarlem and Amsterdam. He lived out his final years in Antwerp, where he died in 1638. Even though his life was short and turbulent, this remarkable master left behind an impressive oeuvre, small in scale but of outstanding quality. Varied and innovative: these are the words that best describe his work. From an art-historical perspective, Brouwer's paintings are of exceptional importance: as a groundbreaking master, he forms a bridge between the Bruegelian tradition of the 16th century and the genre and landscape art of the 17th century. His artistic virtuosity and the different layers of meaning in his work make him one of the most fascinating artists of the 17th century in the Low Countries. Brouwer's fame in his own time and the appreciation he enjoyed from other masters like Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck stands in sharp contrast to the manner in which he is viewed today, where he still remains largely unknown to the general public. Adriaen Brouwer. Master of Emotions hopes to change this perception. Katrien Lichtert is curator of this ambitious exhibition. She has gathered around her an international team of art historians, who have analyzed and explained in depth the various aspects of Brouwer's work. The result is a book that finally does justice to the master of emotions. The book is published to coincide with the exhibition in Oudenaarde (15 September - 16 December 2018). Twenty-seven works by Brouwer from various private and public collections from all over Europe and the United States have been brought together for the very first time in Oudenaarde, the artist's native city: a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity.

Goodfriend, Firth Haring Fabend, Jaap Jacobs, Wim Klooster, Harry Macy, Jr., Dennis J. Maika, Simon Middleton, Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, Annette Stott, David William Voorhees, and Richard Waldron.
