Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubens and the Eloquence of Drawing re-examines the early graphic practice of the preeminent northern Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577–1640) in light of early modern traditions of eloquence, particularly as promoted in the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Flemish, Neostoic circles of philologist, Justus Lipsius (1547–1606). Focusing on the roles that rhetorical and pedagogical considerations played in the artist’s approach to disegno during and following his formative Roman period (1600–08), this volume highlights Rubens’s high ambitions for the intimate medium of drawing as a primary site for generating meaningful and original ideas for his larger artistic enterprise. As in the Lipsian realm of writing personal letters – the humanist activity then described as a cognate activity to the practice of drawing – a Senecan approach to eclecticism, a commitment to emulation, and an Aristotelian concern for joining form to content all played important roles. Two chapter-long studies of individual drawings serve to demonstrate the relevance of these interdisciplinary rhetorical concerns to Rubens’s early practice of drawing. Focusing on Rubens’s Medea Fleeing with Her Dead Children (Los Angeles, Getty Museum), and Kneeling Man (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen), these close-looking case studies demonstrate Rubens’s commitments to creating new models of eloquent drawing and to highlighting his own status as an inimitable maker. Demonstrating the force and quality of Rubens’s intellect in the medium then most associated with the closest ideas of the artist, such designs were arguably created as more robust pedagogical and preparatory models that could help strengthen art itself for a new and often troubled age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A re-creation of the glorious and seductive visual world of eighteenth-century Europe through the life of one of its most notorious figures. In 18th-century Europe, the shape-shifting libertine Giacomo Casanova seduced his way across the Continent. Although notorious for the scores of amorous conquests he recorded in his remarkably frank memoirs, Casanova was just as practised at charming his way into the most elite social circles. In his travels across Europe and through every level of society from the theatrical demimonde to royal courts, he was also seduced by the visual splendours he encountered. This volume accompanies the first major art exhibition to recreate Casanova's visual world, from his birthplace of Venice to the cultural capitals of Paris and London and the outposts of Eastern Europe. Summoning up the people he met and the cityscapes, highways, salons, theatres, masked balls, boudoirs, gambling halls, and dining rooms he frequented, it provides a survey of important works of eighteenth-century European art by masters such as Canaletto, Fragonard, Boucher, Houdon and Hogarth. Twelve essays by prominent scholars illuminate multiple facets of Casanova's world as reflected in the arts of his time, providing a fascinating grand tour of Europe conducted by a quintessential figure of the eighteenth century as well as a splendid visual display of the spirit of the age.

Book excerpt: An important collection of interviews with contemporary artists, musicians and writers in dialogue with Beirut and Cairo today, These Are the Tools of the Present is not an overview of the art scenes in these cities, but a picture of how artists think about being active in the contexts of these two cities. It offers insight into the circumstances that structure their stories, and the often-accidental influences that shaped the development of their practices. Published on the occasion of Meeting Points 8, Both Sides of the Curtain, a biannual international multidisciplinary arts event taking the Arab world as a starting point to pose questions about art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technical examinations of Early Netherlandish art have propelled in-depth studies of key works far beyond traditional connoisseurship methods. Ingenious new applications, as well as a prodigious amount of comparative technical documentation, have changed our views of standard workshop practices, including issues of materials and techniques, and details about the precise nature of collaboration. The studies presented in this book illustrate the variety of approaches and findings in what can be called the new connoisseurship. Here the reader will find alternative methods of evaluating Jan van Eyck's Saint Barbara and Ghent Altarpiece, Dirk Bouts's canvas paintings, Jacb Cornelisz van Oostsanen's Berlin Sketchbook, the Evora Altarpiece and the Saint Anne Altarpiece from Gerard David's workshop, Jan Gossart's Malvagna Triptych, and a triptych by Pieter I Claeissens. These individual studies will be of interest not only to aficionados of Early Netherlandish painting, but also to students who are keen to learn about the pivotal role of technical studies for this period of art history.

Book excerpt: Lucian Freud's artwork is both intimate and raw. The viewer is confronted with corpulent figures, nudity, and glimpses into the psyches of those he portrayed. The painter, who died in 2011, was the grandchild of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud. The UBS Art Collection contains the majority of etchings from Freud's last creative phase, as well as one watercolor and two paintings--a total of fifty-four works of the highest quality that are simultaneously delicate and bold. The fact that the exhibition is held in Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau is of particular significance, as the city was Freud's birthplace, from which he was forced to flee with his parents in 1933. With the help of the UBS Art Collection, it is as if the artist now returns home. Exhibition: 22.7.-22.10.2017, Martin-Gropius-Bau

Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 20th century a lively and profitable exchange developed between artists in the United States and Mexico. The Americans were full of enthusiasm for the Mexican synthesis of history and modernity and their social commitment, which contrasted strongly with the consumer culture in the U.S. The Mexican artists in turn found important financiers across the border. The volume shows through paintings, drawings, photographs and graphical works from the Harry Ransom Center in Austin and other important museums how this intercultural network brought forth a large number of world-famous artists.00Exhibition: Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin, United States (11.09.2017-01.01.2018) / Museum of the City of New York, United States (2018).

Book excerpt: "Perhaps more than any other painter, Sandro Botticelli (about 1445-1510) exemplifies the artistic achievement of Renaissance Florence in the 15th century. "Botticelli and the Search for the Divine," organized by the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William & Mary and Italy's Metamorfosi Associazione Culturale, explores the dramatic changes in the artist's style and subject matter--from poetic depictions of classical gods and goddesses to austere sacred themes--reflecting the shifting political and religious climate of Florence during his lifetime."--Exhibition website.
