Book Synopsis Estate Landscapes : Design, Improvement and Power in the Post-medieval Landscape by : Jonathan Finch
Download or read book Estate Landscapes : Design, Improvement and Power in the Post-medieval Landscape written by Jonathan Finch and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting study of the social and landscape phenomena of the Estate Landscape. In recent years, the post-medieval landscape has attracted new interest from archaeologists, historians, and geographers concerned to understand the development of the historic environment. One of the key structuring elements within these landscapes from the sixteenth century until the aftermath of the Second World War was undoubtedly the landed estate. However, it was not until the late nineteenth century that any systematic attempt to quantify the presence of these estates was undertaken, prompted by the move to democratic reform and the persistent link between political power and landed wealth. Yet the importance of the landed estate in structuring power, social relationships, and both agricultural and industrial production was not limited to the UK. From the eighteenth century, the link between the UK estates and patterns of landholding and exploitation in the colonies became increasingly complex and recursive. This volume explores the relationships between the form and structure of British and Colonial estate landscapes, their agricultural management and the political structures and social relationships they reproduced. The articles address themes as diverse as the creation and development of the agrarian landscape, improvement, ornamental landscapes and gardens and estate architecture. Overall, it highlights the wealth and diversity of existing scholarship and suggests new directions for post-medieval archaeology in this dynamic area of research.

Download or read book Revival Type written by Paul Shaw and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating account of the design inspirations and technical transformations that have shaped the digital typefaces of the 21st century In this fascinating tour through typographic history, Paul Shaw provides a visually rich exploration of digital type revival. Many typefaces from the pre-digital past have been reinvented for use on computers and mobile devices, while other new font designs are revivals of letterforms, drawn from inscriptions, calligraphic manuals, posters, and book jackets. Revival Type deftly introduces these fonts, many of which are widely used, and engagingly tells their stories. Examples include translations of letterforms not previously used as type, direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces, and looser interpretations of older fonts. Among these are variations on classic designs by John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, William Caslon, Firmin Didot, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, and Nicolas Jenson, as well as typefaces inspired by less familiar designers, including Richard Austin, Philippe Grandjean, and Eudald Pradell. Updates and revisions of 20th-century classics such as Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro, and Neue Haas Grotesk (Helvetica) are also discussed. Handsomely illustrated with annotated examples, archival material depicting classic designs, and full character sets of modern typefaces, Revival Type is an essential introduction for designers and design enthusiasts into the process of reinterpreting historical type.

Book Synopsis A Manual of Oil Painting by : John Collier
Download or read book A Manual of Oil Painting written by John Collier and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " 'The art of painting in oils, ' says the author of this little handbook, "is a very difficult one, and not the least of its difficulties consists in the great uncertainty that exists as to the proper methods to be pursued." So far as results recommend a particular method, Mr. Collier's modus operandi is abundantly recommended. His system, as set forth here, is a modification of Mr. Poynter's, from whose teaching in the Slade School it is directly derived. But Mr. Collier does not restrict students to his own method, and in this manual he gives those of other artists, as well as his own, and the rules in force in the South Kensington Schools. His own method is a direct one, and beginners in the art of oil painting will receive valuable assistance from the suggestions he gives. The work is divided into two parts, dealing respectively with practice and theory. The second part is as interesting to the general reader as it is helpful to the student; for, besides containing the rules governing aerial perspective, it includes a very lucid description of Young's undulatory theory of light; -- a theory which explains Achromatopsia and other puzzling anomalies in colour sensation." --The Ruskin Reading Guild Journal, Volume 1
