Book excerpt: George Myers was one of the great Master Builders of the Victorian Age. Born in 'Hull in 1803, he gained renown as 'Pugin's Builder' and - from his workshops in Hull and then in London - directed a nationwide contracting business. Myers executed many of Pugin's buildings, such as cathedrals in Newcastle, Birmingham, Nottingham and Southwark and the Medieval Court for the Great Exhibition of 1851. In fact Myers undertook work for nearly 100 other architects. This included the original camp at Aldershot, military hospitals and the Staff College, Broadmoor Hospital and restoration work at the Guildhall, the Towers of London, Windsor Castle and extensive work for the Rothschilds. He died in London in 1875. This book, based on original research, provides a fascinating account of mid-19th century England and some of its most interesting figures. It contains hitherto unpublished drawings by Pugin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on change and continuity within the architecture of the Southern and Northern Low Countries from 1530 to 1700. Instead of looking at both regions separately and stressing the stylistic differences between the classicist North and the baroque South, the book establishes a new, common history of architecture for both parts of the Low Countries during the 17th century. Their reception of Antiquity in the guise of the Italian Renaissance, first introduced in Court circles in the early 16th century, constituted the common heritage on which they built after the political separation. The book also reassesses the position of Netherlandish architecture in the international debate on the Renaissance north of the Alps. Krista De Jonge is professor of architectural history at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. She has published extensively on early modern Netherlandish architecture, including Burgundian and Habsburg court residences and the Renaissance problematic. Konrad A. Ottenheym is professor for architectural history at Utrecht University. His research is focussed on Dutch early modern architecture and its international connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story, 'Come Lasses And Lads', was originally published in 1884 as one of Randolph Caldecott's sixteen 'Picture Books'. These were published in pairs each Christmas from 1877 until Caldecott's death in 1886. Randolph Caldecott (1846 – 1886) was one of the most important British illustrators of the Victorian period. He transformed the world of decorated children’s books, with his delicate yet considered drawings and imaginative subject choices. Caldecott selected all the stories and rhymes he illustrated (and occasionally wrote) and frequently added to the stories himself. His delightful style and humour can still be enjoyed by young and old alike. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of llustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage classic illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterful history of the monumental architecture of Alexandria, as well as of the rest of Egypt, encompasses an entire millennium—from the city’s founding by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. to the years just after the Islamic conquest of A.D. 642. Long considered lost beyond recall, the architecture of ancient Alexandria has until now remained mysterious. But here Judith McKenzie shows that it is indeed possible to reconstruct the city and many of its buildings by means of meticulous exploration of archaeological remains, written sources, and an array of other fragmentary evidence. The book approaches its subject at the macro- and the micro-level: from city-planning, building types, and designs to architectural style. It addresses the interaction between the imported Greek and native Egyptian traditions; the relations between the architecture of Alexandria and the other cities and towns of Egypt as well as the wider Mediterranean world; and Alexandria’s previously unrecognized role as a major source of architectural innovation and artistic influence. Lavishly illustrated with new plans of the city in the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine periods; reconstruction drawings; and photographs, the book brings to life the ancient city and uncovers the true extent of its architectural legacy in the Mediterranean world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available again in paperback, this first survey of building types ever written remains an essential guide to vital and often overlooked features of the architectural and social inheritance of the West. Here Nikolaus Pevsner shares his immense erudition and keenly discerning eye with readers curious about the ways in which architecture reflects the character of society. He describes twenty types of buildings ranging from the most monumental to the least, from the most ideal to the most utilitarian. More than seven hundred illustrations illuminate the text. Both Europe and America have been covered with examples chosen largely from the nineteenth century, the crucial period for diversification. Included are national monuments, libraries, theaters, hospitals, prisons, factories, hotels, and many other public buildings; churches and private dwellings have been excluded for practical reasons. The author is concerned not only with the evolution of each type in response to social and architectural change, but also with differing attitudes toward function, materials, and style.

Book excerpt: This catalogue of over 3,000 items presents a huge variety of ephemera from ancient Corinth, fascinating for the glimpses of daily life in an ancient city which they offer us. The book presents a miscellany of figurines, vessels and furniture, jewelry and dress accessories, seals and stamps, keys and locks, glass panes and inlay, loomweights, writing implements, surgical tools, musical instruments, religious paraphernalia, military accoutrements, and tools. The chronological range of the material is from the 8th century B.C. to the Turkish period. The largest group of objects belong to the Byzantine period and the next largest to the centuries of Roman rule. Of special interest are the sections on glass vessels, on loomweights, on finger rings, and on lead seals.
