Download or read book The Iconic North written by Joan Sangster and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-05-21 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent archaeological discoveries in the polar region have reanimated stock images of the intrepid explorer who braves the elements to bring modernity to a frigid northern wasteland. The Iconic North reveals that ideological assumptions, economic priorities, and a shift in government strategy in the postwar era all influenced how northern culture was represented in popular Canadian imagery. Whether it was film, television, or women’s autobiographies, the “primitive” North was often portrayed as the mirror opposite to the “modern” South. In crisp and elegant prose, Joan Sangster redirects current debates about the geopolitical prospects of the North by addressing how women and gender relations have played a key role in the history of northern development.Drawing on archival and cultural sources, Sangster shows how gender, race, and colonialism shape our understanding of northern peoples, economies, and government policy. This work reveals how assumptions about both Indigenous and non-Indigenous women shaped gender, class, and political relationships in the circumpolar north – a region now commanding more of the world’s attention.

Download or read book Life Among the Qallunaat written by Mini Aodla Freeman and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Among the Qallunaat is the story of Mini Aodla Freeman’s experiences growing up in the Inuit communities of James Bay and her journey in the 1950s from her home to the strange land and stranger customs of the Qallunaat, those living south of the Arctic. Her extraordinary story, sometimes humourous and sometimes heartbreaking, illustrates an Inuit woman’s movement between worlds and ways of understanding. It also provides a clear-eyed record of the changes that swept through Inuit communities in the 1940s and 1950s. Mini Aodla Freeman was born in 1936 on Cape Hope Island in James Bay. At the age of sixteen, she began nurse's training at Ste. Therese School in Fort George, Quebec, and in 1957 she moved to Ottawa to work as a translator for the then Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. Her memoir, Life Among the Qallunaat, was published in 1978 and has been translated into French, German, and Greenlandic. Life Among the Qallunaat is the third book in the First Voices, First Texts series, which publishes lost or under appreciated texts by Indigenous writers. This reissue of Mini Aodla Freeman’s path-breaking work includes new material, an interview with the author, and an afterword by Keavy Martin and Julie Rak, with Norma Dunning.

Book Synopsis The Creator’s Game by : Allan Downey
Download or read book The Creator’s Game written by Allan Downey and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gift from the Creator – that is where it all began. The game of lacrosse has been a central element of many Indigenous cultures for centuries, but once non-Indigenous players entered the sport, it became a site of appropriation – then reclamation – of Indigenous identities. Focusing on the history of lacrosse in Indigenous communities from the 1860s to the 1990s, The Creator’s Game explores Indigenous-non-Indigenous relations and Indigenous identity formation. While the game was being stripped of its cultural and ceremonial significance and being appropriated to construct a new identity for the nation-state of Canada, it was also being used by Indigenous peoples for multiple ends: to resist residential school experiences; initiate pan-Indigenous political mobilization; and articulate Indigenous sovereignty and nationhood on the world stage. The multilayered story of lacrosse serves as a potent illustration of how identity and nationhood are formed and reformed. Engaging and innovative, The Creator’s Game provides a unique view of Indigenous self-determination in the face of settler-colonialism.

Download or read book Contemporary Criminological Issues written by Carolyn Côté-Lussier and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Criminological Issues tackles some of today’s most pressing social issues, from the criminalization of Indigenous peoples to interpersonal violence, border control, and armed conflicts. This book advances cutting-edge theories and methods, with the aim of moving beyond the scholarship that reproduces insecurity and exclusion. The breadth of approaches encompasses much of the current critical criminological scholarship, serving as a counterpoint to the growth of managerial and administrative criminologies and the rise of explicitly exclusionary and punitive state policies and practices with respect to ‘crime’ and ‘security.’ This edited collection featuring two books, one in English and one in French, includes important contributions to knowledge and public policy by eminent experts and emerging scholars. This book is published in English.
