Some contend that the importance of attitude towards mathematics is its connection to achievement; McLeod (1992) found a low but significant correlation between these two factors - thus, more positive attitude may produce a higher level of achievement... There is a school of thought that society in general and girls in particular, consider mathematics as a male domain - that Mathematics is either too mechanical or too technical for girls. Girls are also considered as not being able to think or work scientifically (Agholor, 1993). The failure to make mathematics appealing and safe for ALL is turning the potential for social profit into grave deficit, the cost of which the average taxpayers will bear both financially and socially (Ogden and Germinario, 1988, p. xvii). This book investigates the attitudes of students towards the study of mathematics with the radar on women in particular to ascertain whether indeed their fewer numbers in mathematics is due to stereotyped attitudes and myths.

Book excerpt: Despite decades of efforts to promote gender equality, most leadership positions in business, politics, education, and even NGOs are occupied by men, and most people still work in occupations dominated by one sex. This book argues that gender imbalances in leadership and occupations are not simply a moral issue or an economic issue, but a governance issue. Gender imbalances persist in large part because the very people with the authority and influence to do something about them know very little about gender and how it works in their organizations and in society at large. Gender imbalanced governance is an expression of entrenched ideas about masculinity and femininity that lead to poor decision making. Improving the quality of governance requires action to counteract the main justifications for the status quo. Based on interviews and conversations with leaders and managers in Europe and the United States, the book presents seven of the most common explanations for persistent gender imbalances and shows how they are based on common stereotypes and myths about men's and women's abilities and preferences. This book provides a guided tour of current research about gender from a multi-disciplinary perspective. I feel we should explore whether there is a specific thrust to mat- matics education in the here and now, and be very practical about it. For me education is the enhancement of knowledge and understanding, and there is a strong and unbreakable link between the two. There seems l- tle point in acquiring knowledge without understanding its meaning. Nor is it enough to gain a deep understanding of problems without gaining the appropriate knowledge to work for their solution. Thus knowledge and understanding are each necessary conditions for the process of education, but only when they are linked will the process bear fruit. Only in the b- anced interplay of knowledge and understanding can we expect to achieve genuine education.
