Book excerpt: Bridging the Services Chasm provides a comprehensive framework companies can use to make critical service strategy decisions that have rapidly become the difference between product success and market failure. Based on the analysis of technology providers, this book leverages a combination of public record, unique survey data, and direct interaction to clearly define the critical role services is now playing in the success of product companies. In 1991, Geoffrey Moore published Crossing the Chasm. This seminal work framed and defined the specific challenges that companies face as they attempt to drive new product offerings to market. Since then, a new set of strategy challenges for product-centric companies has become evident. And there is a new chasm that companies must decide how to cross: The Services Chasm. Bridging the Services Chasm frames the services strategy decisions product companies can no longer afford to defer and provides a clear path for action.

Book excerpt: A guide to designing and implementing VPLS services over an IP/MPLS switched service provider backbone Today's communication providers are looking for convenience, simplicity, and flexible bandwidth across wide area networks-but with the quality of service and control that is critical for business networking applications like video, voice and data. Carrier Ethernet VPN services based on VPLS makes this a reality. Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a pseudowire (PW) based, multipoint-to-multipoint layer 2 Ethernet VPN service provided by services providers By deploying a VPLS service to customers, the operator can focus on providing high throughput, highly available Ethernet bridging services and leave the layer 3 routing decision up to the customer. Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) is quickly becoming the number one choice for many enterprises and service providers to deploy data communication networks. Alcatel-Lucent VPLS solution enables service providers to offer enterprise customers the operational cost benefits of Ethernet with the predictable QoS characteristics of MPLS. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Again and again social change movements--on matter s from the environment to women's rights--have been run by middle-class leaders. But in order to make real progress toward economic and social change, poor people--those most affected by social problems--must be the ones to speak up and lead. It can be done. Linda Stout herself grew up in poverty in rural North Carolina and went on to found one of this country's most successful and innovative grassroots organizations, the Piedmont Peace Project. Working for peace, jobs, health care, and basic social services in North Carolina's conservative Piedmont region, the project has attracted national attention for its success in drawing leadership from within a working-class community, actively encouraging diversity, and empowering people who have never had a voice in policy decisions to speak up for their own interests. The Piedmont Peace Project demonstrates that new ways of organizing can really work. Bridging the Class Divide tells the inspiring story of Linda Stout's life as the daughter of a tenant farmer, as a self-taught activist, and as a leader in the progressive movement. It also gives practical lessons on how to build real working relationships between people of different income levels, races, and genders. This book will inspire and enrich anyone who works for change in our society.

Research and development in these areas have been going on for some time, reaching the stage of products. The objectives of HSNMC 2004 (International Conference on High Speed Networks and Multimedia Communications) were to promote research and development activities and to encourage communication between academic researchers and engineers throughout the world in the areas related to high-speed networks and multimedia communications. The seventh edition of HSNMC was held in Toulouse, France, on June 30– July2,2004. Therewere266submissionstoHSNMCthisyearfrom34countries, which were evaluated by program committee members assisted by external - viewers. Each paper was reviewed by several reviewers. One hundred and one papers were selected to be included in these proceedings. The quality of s- missions was high, and the committee had to decline some papers worthy for publication. The papers selected in this book illustrate the state of the art, current d- cussions, and development trends in the areas of networks, telecommunication and multimedia applications. The contributions published in this book und- line the international importance of the related ?eld of research. They cover a variety of topics, such as QoS in Di?Serv networks, QoS analysis and m- surement, performance modelling, TCP modelling and analysis, MPLS for QoS provision, scheduling and resource allocation, routing, multicast, security and privacy issues, peer-to-peer applications, video applications, software and m- dleware for networks, mobile networks, mobility, satellite, mobile IP, wireless networks, WLAN, ad hoc networks, 3G/UMTS, IEEE 802.

Charting the multiplicity of Anzaldúa's impact within and beyond academic disciplines, community trenches, and international borders, Bridging presents more than thirty reflections on her work and her life, examining vibrant facets in surprising new ways and inviting readers to engage with these intimate, heartfelt contributions. Bridging is divided into five sections: The New Mestizas: "transitions and transformations"; Exposing the Wounds: "You gave me permission to fly in the dark"; Border Crossings: Inner Struggles, Outer Change; Bridging Theories: Intellectual Activism with/in Borders; and "Todas somos nos/otras": Toward a "politics of openness." Contributors, who include Norma Elia Cantú, Elisa Facio, Shelley Fisher Fishkin, Aída Hurtado, Andrea Lunsford, Denise Segura, Gloria Steinem, and Mohammad Tamdgidi, represent a broad range of generations, professions, academic disciplines, and national backgrounds. Critically engaging with Anzaldúa's theories and building on her work, they use virtual diaries, transformational theory, poetry, empirical research, autobiographical narrative, and other genres to creatively explore and boldly enact future directions for Anzaldúan studies. A book whose form and content reflect Anzaldúa's diverse audience, Bridging perpetuates Anzaldúa's spirit through groundbreaking praxis and visionary insights into culture, gender, sexuality, religion, aesthetics, and politics. This is a collection whose span is as broad and dazzling as Anzaldúa herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) aims to raise the level of abstraction in software system specifications and increase automation in software development. Modelware technological spaces contain the languages and tools for MDE that software developers take into consideration to model systems and domains. Ontoware technological spaces contain ontology languages and technologies to design, query, and reason on knowledge. With the advent of the Semantic Web, ontologies are now being used within the field of software development, as well. In this thesis, bridging technologies are developed to combine two technological spaces in general. In particular, this thesis focuses on the combination of modelware and ontoware technological spaces. Subsequent to a sound comparison of languages and tools in both spaces, the bridging technologies are used to build a common technological space, which allows for the hybrid use of languages and the interoperable use of tools.
