Book Synopsis Three Dangerous Men: Russia, China, Iran and the Rise of Irregular Warfare by : Seth G. Jones
Download or read book Three Dangerous Men: Russia, China, Iran and the Rise of Irregular Warfare written by Seth G. Jones and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How three key figures in Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran built ruthless irregular warfare campaigns that are eroding American power. In Three Dangerous Men, defense expert Seth Jones argues that the US is woefully unprepared for the future of global competition. While America has focused on building fighter jets, missiles, and conventional warfighting capabilities, its three principal rivals—Russia, Iran, and China—have increasingly adopted irregular warfare: cyber attacks, the use of proxy forces, propaganda, espionage, and disinformation to undermine American power. Jones profiles three pioneers of irregular warfare in Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran who adapted American techniques and made huge gains without waging traditional warfare: Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov; the deceased Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani; and vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission Zhang Youxia. Each has spent his career studying American power and devised techniques to avoid a conventional or nuclear war with the US. Gerasimov helped oversee a resurgence of Russian irregular warfare, which included attempts to undermine the 2016 and 2020 US presidential elections and the SolarWinds cyber attack. Soleimani was so effective in expanding Iranian power in the Middle East that Washington targeted him for assassination. Zhang Youxia presents the most alarming challenge because China has more power and potential at its disposal. Drawing on interviews with dozens of US military, diplomatic, and intelligence officials, as well as hundreds of documents translated from Russian, Farsi, and Mandarin, Jones shows how America’s rivals have bloodied its reputation and seized territory worldwide. Instead of standing up to autocratic regimes, Jones demonstrates that the United States has largely abandoned the kind of information, special operations, intelligence, and economic and diplomatic action that helped win the Cold War. In a powerful conclusion, Jones details the key steps the United States must take to alter how it thinks about—and engages in—competition before it is too late.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Balkan Peninsula, history’s long-disputed bridge between Asia and Europe, the receding Byzantine empire has left behind a patchwork of warring peoples who fight over everything, from their pastures of sheep to the authorship of their countless legends. One such gruesome tale declares that a castle under construction cannot be finished until a young mason’s bride has been walled up alive, one breast left exposed to suckle her growing infant even after her death. Myth becomes perverse reality when a mason is plastered into a bridge over a strategically important river, where his will not be the last human sacrifice.

Book excerpt: The study of history, like the study of a landscape, should begin with the most conspicuous features. The famous men of ancient times are the mountain peaks of history. It is logical then that the study of history should begin with the biographies of these men. Prominent educators, appreciating these truths, have long recognized the value of biography as a preparation for the study of history and have given it an important place in their scheme of studies. The series of historical stories to which this volume belongs was prepared in conformity with the foregoing recommendations and with the best practice of leading schools. It has been the aim of the authors to make an interesting story of each man's life and to tell those stories in a style so simple that pupils in the lower grades will read them with pleasure, and so dignified that they may be used with profit as text-books for reading. In this book, you will find important biographies every man should read at least once in their lives: Romulus, Nero, Julius Caesar, Marcus Aurelius, Pericles, Socrates, Alexander the Great...

Book Synopsis The Pistoleer - Bristol 1643 by : Skye Smith
Download or read book The Pistoleer - Bristol 1643 written by Skye Smith and published by Skye Smith. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cover Flap The last week of July 1643 brought disaster to the rebellion against Charles I. On the 25th they lost Bristol, England’s second richest industrial port. On the 28th they lost Gainsborough and thus all Lincolnshire was in jeopardy. London’s propaganda sheets were scrambling to find any good news in these losses, and so they made heroes out of two unknown militia officers for standing fast when vastly outnumbered by royalist cavalry. Captain Robert Blake in Bristol and Colonel Oliver Cromwell in Gainsborough. The military reputations of both men were made – and then so was history. About the Author Skye Smith is my pen name. In 1630 some of my Manchester Puritan ancestors sailed away to Massachusetts on one of Robert Rich's ships. The Pistoleer is a series of historical adventure novels set in Britain in the 1640's. I was encouraged to write them by fans of my Hoodsman series. This is the eighth of the series, and you should read at least the first novel 'HellBurner' before you read this book because it sets the characters and scene for the entire series. The sequence of the books follows the time-line of the Republic of Great Britain. The chapter headings identify the dates and places. The Appendix gives historical insight in the form of an FAQ. Enjoy. Other Novels By The Same Author: The Hoodsman – 12 historical adventures set in the Norman conquest. Maya’s Aura – 8 new age adventures while tripping around the world. Knut – many historical adventures set in the Viking Era. The Pistoleer – 9 historical adventures set in the English Civil War. The Pistoleer #1 – HellBurner (1638 – 1640) The Pistoleer #2 – Slavers (1640 – 1641) The Pistoleer #3 – Pirates (1641 – 1642) The Pistoleer #4 – Edgehill (1642) The Pistoleer #5 – Brentford (1642) The Pistoleer #6 – Invasion (1642 – 1643) The Pistoleer #7 – Roundway Down (1643) The Pistoleer #8 – Bristol (1643) The Pistoleer #9 – Lyme (1644)
