Book excerpt: Volume 4 of Advances in Medicinal Chemistry is comprised of six chapters on a wide range of topics in medicinal chemistry, including molecular modeling, structure-based drug design, organic synthesis, peptide conformational analysis, biological assessment, structure-activity correlation, and lead optimization. Chapter 1 presents an account about amino acid-based peptide mimetics corresponding to b-turn, loop, helical motifs in proteins as a probe of ligand-receptor and ligand-enzyme molecular interactions. Chapter 2 addresses new facets of the medicinal chemistry of the important anticancer drug Taxol® (paclitaxel). Chapter 3 relates an account of the search for new drugs for the treatment of malaria based on the natural product artemisinin. Chapter 4 applies computational chemistry to the evaluation of compound libraries for biological testing. Chapter 5 describes the construction of a 3-dimensional molecular model of the human thrombin receptor, the first protease-activated G-protein coupled receptor (PAR-1), as a means to explore the intermolecular contacts involved in agonist peptide recognition. Finally, Chapter 6 describes the research conducted at Merck on inhibitors of farnesyl transferase as a potential treatment for human cancers.

Book excerpt: Volume 4 of Advances in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry consists of five chapters that review specific aspects of fly and mammalian development. In Chapter 1, Y. Mishina and R. Behringer discuss various aspects of Müllerian-inhibiting substance (MIS) in mammals, from a brief history of its discovery to recent studies of the MIS gene in transgenic and knock-out animals. In Chapter 2, C. Rushlow and S. Roth discuss the role of the dpp-group genes in dorsoventral patterning of the Drosophila embryo. In Chapter 3, M. Yip and H. Lipshitz discuss the terminal (asegmental termini) gene hierarchy of Drosophila and the genetic control of tissue specification and morphogenesis. In Chapter 4, R. Bachvarova discusses induction of mesoderm and the origin of anterior-posterior polarity in the mouse embryo, using the frog embryo as a paradigm. In Chapter 5, P. Vogt discusses human Y chromosome function in male germ cell development.

Book excerpt: Advances in Nanoporous Materials is a collection of comprehensive reviews of lasting value to the field. The contributions cover all aspects of nanoporous materials, including their preparation and structure, post-synthetic modification, characterization and use in catalysis, adsorption/separation, and all other fields of potential application, e.g., membranes, host/guest chemistry, environmental protection, electrochemistry, sensors, and optical devices. "Nanoporous materials" comprise all kinds of porous solids that possess pores in the range from about 0.2 nm up to 50 nm, irrespective of their chemical composition, their origin (natural or synthetic), and their amorphous or crystalline nature. Typical examples are zeolites and zeolite-like materials (e.g., crystalline microporous aluminophosphates and their derivatives), mesoporous oxides such as silica, metal organic frameworks, pillared clays, porous carbons, and related materials. - State-of-the-art reviews keep coverage current - Broad scope provides a full topical overview - Contributions from renowned experts lend authority to the material

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years there has been a shortage of flight opportunities for biological and medical projects. And those that were available usually had severe restrictions on instrumentation, number of subjects, duration, time allotted for performing the experiments, a possibility for repetition of experiments. It is our hope and expectation that this will change once the international Space Station is in full operation. The advantages of a permanent space station, already demonstrated by the Russian Mir station, are continuous availability of expert crew and a wide range of equipment, possibility of long-term experiments where this is waranted, increased numbers of subjects through larger laboratory space, proper controls in the large 1-G centrifuge, easier repeatability of experiments when needed. The limited number of flight opportunities during recent years probably explains why it has taken so long to acquire a sufficient number of high quality contributions for this seventh volume of Advances in Space Biology and Medicine. While initially the series wassailed at annually appearing volumes, we are now down to a biannual appearance. Hopefully, it will be possible to return to annual volumes in the future when results from space station experimentation at beginning to pour in. The first three chapters of this volume deal with muscle. Fejtek and Wassersug provide a survey of all studies on muscle of rodents flown in space, and include an interesting demography of this aspect of space research. Riley reviews our current knowledge of the effects of long-term spaceflight and re-entry on skeletal muscle, and considers the questions still to be answered before we can be satisfied that long-term space missions, such as on the space station, can be safely undertaken. Stein reviews our understanding of the nutritional and hormonal aspects of muscle loss in spaceflight, and concludes that the protein loss in space could be deleterious to health during flight and after return. Strollo summarizes our understanding of the major endocrine systems on the ground, then considers what we know about their functioning in space, concluding that there is much to be learned about the changes taking place during spaceflight. The many problems of providing life support (oxygen regeneration and food supply) during extended stay on the Moon, on Mars, or in space by means of plant cultivation are discussed by Salisbury. The challenges of utilizing electrophoresis in microgravity for the separation of cells and proteins are illustrated and explained by Bauer and colleagues. Finally, the chapter on teaching of space life sciences by Schmitt shows that this field of science has come of age, but also that its multidisciplinary character poses interesting challenges to teaching it.

Book excerpt: In this book we attempt to summarize the present state of knowledge in the field of photoimmunology and to provide the background necessary to put this knowledge into perspective. This objective requires descriptive overviews in photobiology, immunology, and dermatology. Our hope is to facilitate interdis ciplinary communication and to stimulate interest in photoimmunology. Section I, Principles of Photoimmunology, describes (1) basic interactions between UV and visible radiation and biologic matter, (2) the optical properties of human skin, and (3) normal and abnormal responses to UV radiation. Basic principles of selected aspects of immunology and photobiology are explained. Section II, Experimental Photoimmunology, describes molecular, cellular, animal, and human studies in photoimmunology. Section III, Clinical Photo immunology, presents evidence of the involvement of photoimmunologic mechanisms in diseases of the skin and blood and examines the possible involve ment of immunologic mechanisms in therapeutic photomedicine. The funda mental principles outlined in this book should prove useful for decades to come. However, our expectation is that the experimental data will be outdated in a short period of time. The potential of photoimmunology is great enough and the serious study of photo immunology is recent enough that this should be the case. This book is dedicated to the goal of continuing rapid growth in the field of photoimmunology .
