Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In This Intimate Historical Epic, the Heart-wrenching Dilemmas of The Meeting Place Come to Rest on...The Sacred Shore Oceans and circumstances have forced families apart. For the banished French Acadians drifting in exile, the shore means safety--though it is a safety at a terrible price. For the lonely British nobleman, the shore holds a single chance to secure his legacy. For Andrew and Catherine Harrow, the shore marks a tragic separation. An extraordinary set of journeys awaits them all, each as intricate and perilous as the coastline itself. New beginnings are connected to all that has come before. And the past penetrates into what is yet to come. The common thread is a yearning to discover their identities in their families, in their communities, and in their God.

Book excerpt: Acadian Redemption, the first biography of an Acadian exile, defines the 18th century society of Acadia into which Joseph dit Beausoleil Broussard was born in 1702. The book explains his early life events and militant struggles with the British who had, for years, wanted to lay claim to the Acadians' rich lands. The book discusses the repercussions of Beausoleil's life that resulted in the evolution of the Acadian culture into what is now called the Cajun culture. More than 50 vintage photographs, maps, and documents are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acadians remain one of the few North American historical minorities which has been able to survive as a distinct ethno-cultural and linguistic group. This fact is all the more striking since this people suffered a deportation and dispersion, and it does not possess its own territory, nor does it have a government of its own. Acadians therefore have continually had to face the issue of autonomy in all its varied forms. The central issue addressed by this book is an inquiry into the nature of the process which has maintained the unique Acadian minority in existence right up to the present day. This study differs from other multidisciplinary analyses of this community principally because it studies the historical continuity of the dynamic of autonomy that has evolved since the beginning of Acadia. The research for this complete chronological framework encompasses a number of intersecting disciplinary approaches at the historical, political, socio-cultural and existential levels. These differing perspectives are harmonized by their common objective of defining the process of autonomization, and the counter-process of heteronomization, which lie at the heart of each of the periods studied. These approaches allow critical openings between the framework of social history, power relationships and the fundamental aspirations of the minority.

Book excerpt: Three centuries ago on the coast of Nova Scotia intrepid Frenchmen built a wealthy fur-trading colony they called Acadia. On one side of the beautiful Baye Franoise reigned aristocratic Sicur d'Aulnay. On the other, the rebel Charles La Tour and his wife, a retired actress, held sway. There was fierce enmity between them, and in France, wily old Cardinal Richelieu was pleased that it should be so. But to the Acadians the escalating violence brought only fear and suffering. And before long, La Tour and d'Aulnay *and everyone they each held dear *were to be trapped in the machinery of hatred they had set in motion. . . . ACADIA is the thrilling true story of real men and women *ancestors of the Louisiana Cajuns *who gambled on a dream and an unforeseeable destiny. It is distinguished historical novelist Alfred Silver's finest work.
