Book excerpt: The apostle Paul wrote his most personal letter while abused and abandoned in a Roman prison. He wrote to believers who lived in the shadow of the Roman tyrant, Nero. And yet this letter, Philippians, is the most joy-filled epistle in the Bible. Weaving together modern stories and historical detail, Dr. David Jeremiah explores Philippians verse by verse, showing us what it means to be joyful in spite of circumstances. Whatever you are facing today, Count It All Joy will inspire you to find the joy that Jesus promises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born for Adversity examines the sometimes turbulent, often impassioned relationships between siblings. Well-known stories from the Bible and mythology are re-told throughout the book, interwoven with the tale of two brothers on their journey through life. Whether born into a family from ancient times or in modern culture, brothers and sisters have faced similar challenges throughout the millennia—jealousy, control, judgment, protection, forgiveness, and love—all common facets in the labyrinth of sibling relationships, the outcomes ever hinging upon choices of the mind and heart. Born for Adversity follows the lives of Jackson and Jesse McAlister. Raised in a Christian, blue-collar family in the mid-twentieth century, Jackson and Jesse struggle to find their way into adulthood. Their disparate natures clash when their decisions lead to trouble on both sides. Then, a dark secret emerges to nearly destroy all hope, and a young woman tugs at both their hearts, forcing them to face each other and their true feelings. Discover the possibilities borne of unconditional love and the disasters wrought from envy and hatred. Whether in ages past or present day, true forgiveness blazes a trail through the tangles of sibling rivalry, ending in ties that bind forever strong and true.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel "diaries" of Bishop George Bell from 1933 to 1939 provide insights into the crisis of German Protestantism in those years. Throughout the middle years of the twentieth century George Bell, bishop of Chichester 1929-57, was deeply involved in the ecumenical movement and the political life of Europe. His sustained commitment to German affairs was demonstrated by his ten visits to Germany, between 1928 and 1957. They are documented in extensive travel "diaries", some of them purely personal and others circulated confidentially to fellow church leaders at the time. Together with other related sources, they provide extraordinary insights into the struggles of the German churches during and after the Third Reich. Equally, they demonstrate the profound difficulties which English Christians faced in coming toterms with a very different Protestant Christianity, and a disturbingly violent political culture. ANDREW CHANDLER teaches in the Department of History at the University of Birmingham.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus said, “Tribulation or persecution arises because of the word” (Matthew 13:21, NKJV). This implies, while everyone has troubles, committed Christians have them for different reasons. “Because of the word” means we are learning God’s Word, living it, and spreading its saving light. “Christian difficulties” are adversities Satan sends to destroy our faith and usefulness to God. Yet God permits them to build Christian character—if we respond properly. Spiritual Truths for Overcoming Adversity explores the deep ministry of adversity, revealing God’s loving guidance and wise purposes in all our difficulties. Its biblical insights illuminate God’s path through every shadowy valley and help us stop fighting and start cooperating with God, so He can mature our faith, draw us nearer, and use us more fruitfully. Search this Word-light, and let it search you. Obey it, and it will change you. Share it, so it can shine through you! Book Review 1: "Words fail me to express how much the Lord spoke to me through this book . . . and comforted me and strengthened me and guided me to withstand my sufferings and adversities." -- Evangeline Spurgeon, India Book Review 2: "Using Scriptures, this book will teach you how to understand and overcome your spiritual battles. This book is full of Godly wisdom. I praise God for . . . using it to open my heart and mind to know how to overcome." -- E. Brennan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the Church of England's understanding of the Third Reich and its impact on the reactions to and memory of the Holocaust in Britain. Argues that the Anglican Church did not engage with the Third Reich through the prism of the persecution of the Jews. English Christians commonly perceived Nazism as significant through its anti-Christianity, as an attack on Christian culture, and not through its antisemitism. In the 1930s the Church was opposed to war, but when Nazi antisemitism became much more pronounced after 1938, the Church incorporated this persecution into its image of Nazism as anti-Christian. While there was some concern for Jewish victims (especially on the part of George Bell and William Temple), particular concern was expressed for the German Christian victims of totalitarianism. This led the Anglican Church, after the war, to favor reconstruction of West Germany as a buffer against communism and anti-Christianity. The Church objected to war crimes trials as being opposed to "Christian forgiveness" vs. the "Jewish" value of vengeance, a view which sought to reduce the significance of Nazi antisemitism and the Holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade ago, Jerry Sittser prayed for the protection of his family, yet three of his loved ones--his daughter, his wife, and his mother--died in an automobile accident. What went wrong? "Why wasn't my prayer answered?" he asks. "It is no longer an abstract question to me. What should we do and how should we respond when our prayers--prayers that seem right and true and good--go unanswered?" In When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer, Sittser continues exploring the issues he addressed in A Grace Disguised. He asks, "Why doesn't God answer our prayers? What, if anything, can we do about it?" Sittser is intensely committed to exploring the Christian faith, especially when it doesn't seem to "work." In this thoughtful and beautifully written book, he moves beyond easy answers and religious formulas to explore the goodness and greatness of a God who cannot be controlled but can be trusted. When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer takes an honest and probing look at the problem of unanswered prayer. In doing so, it draws us ever deeper into a relationship with the God who is the end of all our prayers, the object of our faith, the one who fulfills our deepest longings.
