Book excerpt: The deep forest and broad savannah, the campsites, kraals, and villages—from this immense area south of the Sahara Desert the distinguished American folklorist Roger D. Abrahams has selected ninety-five tales that suggest both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the people who live there. The storytellers weave imaginative myths of creation and tales of epic deeds, chilling ghost stories, and ribald tales of mischief and magic in the animal and human realms. Abrahams renders these stories in a narrative voice that reverberates with the rhythms of tribal song and dance and the emotional language of universal concerns. Book excerpt: "Angell and Pinn have selected a set of lively and significant examples of social protest literature from A.M.E. Church periodicals and demonstrated that these newspapers and journals represent a critically important location in which African Americans debated vital questions of the day."--Judith Weisenfeld, Barnard College Although the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church has long been acknowledged as a crucial institution in African American life during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, relatively little attention has been given to the ways in which the church's publications influenced social awareness and protest among its members and others, both in the United States and abroad. Filling that gap, this volume brings together a rich sampling of A.M.E. literature addressing a variety of social issues and controversies. As the editors observe, the formation of independent black churches in the early nineteenth century was not just a religious act but a political one with ramifications extending into every area of life. The A.M.E. Church, as a leader among those new denominations, made the educational, moral, political, and social needs of black Americans a constant concern. Through its newspapers and magazines--including the A.M.E. Church Review and the Christian Recorder--the church produced a steady flow of news articles, editorials, and scholarly essays that articulated its positions, nurtured intellectual debate, and contributed to the ongoing struggle for racial equality. Drawing together writings from the Civil War era to the eve of World War II, this book is organized thematically. Each chapter presents a selection of A.M.E. sources on a particular topic: civil rights, education, black theology, African missions and emigrationism, women's identities, and socialism and the social gospel. Among the writers represented are such notable figures as W. E. B. Du Bois, Henry McNeal Turner, Ida B. Wells, Amanda Berry Smith, and Benjamin Tucker Tanner. An invaluable new resource for researchers and students, this book demonstrates both the variety and vitality of A.M.E. social and political thought. The Editors: Stephen W. Angell is associate professor of religion at Florida A&M University and author of Henry McNeal Turner and African-American Religion in the South. Anthony B. Pinn is associate professor of religious studies at Macalester College. He is the author of Why Lord? Suffering and Evil in Black Theology and Varieties of African American Religious Experience and editor of Making the Gospel Plain: The Writings of Bishop Reverdy C. Ransom.

Book excerpt: I am advised by my publishers that this book is to be included in their catalogue of humorous publications, and this friendly warning gives me an opportunity to say that however humorous it may be in effect, its intention is perfectly serious; and, even if it were otherwise, it seems to me that a volume written wholly in dialect must have its solemn, not to say melancholy, features. With respect to the Folk-Lore series, my purpose has been to preserve the legends themselves in their original simplicity, and to wed them permanently to the quaint dialect-if, indeed, it can be called a dialect-through the medium of which they have become a part of the domestic history of every Southern family; and I have endeavored to give to the whole a genuine flavor of the old plantation...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Remus Stories (1906) by Joel Chandler Harris (1845-1908), with illustratrions. Uncle Remus is a collection of animal stories, songs, and oral folklore, collected from Southern United States African-Americans. Many of the stories are didactic, much like those of Aesop's Fables and the stories of Jean de La Fontaine. Uncle Remus is a kindly old former slave who serves as a storytelling device, passing on the folktales to children gathered around him. Br'er Rabbit ("Brother Rabbit") is the main character of the stories, a likable character, prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a lump of tar and puts clothing on it. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the "tar baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as Tar Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and becomes stuck.

Book excerpt: In contemporary race and sexuality studies, the topic of animality emerges almost exclusively in order to index the dehumanization that makes discrimination possible. Bestial Traces argues that a more fundamental disavowal of human animality conditions the bestialization of racial and sexual minorities. Hence, when conservative politicians equate homosexuality with bestiality, they betray an anxious effort to deny the animality inherent in all sexuality. Focusing on literary texts by Edgar Allan Poe, Joel Chandler Harris, Richard Wright, Philip Roth, and J. M. Coetzee, together with philosophical texts by Derrida, Heidegger, Agamben, Freud, and Nietzsche, Peterson maintains that the representation of social and political others as animals can be mitigated but never finally abolished. All forms of belonging inevitably exclude some others as "beasts." Though one might argue that absolute political equality and inclusion remain desirable, even if ultimately unattainable, ideals, Bestial Traces shows that, by maintaining such principles, we exacerbate rather than ameliorate violence because we fail to confront how discrimination and exclusion condition all social relations.

Contrary to that popular notion, religion has played a prominent role throughout the history of America's mass media. It was integral to the founding and development of the media during the formative stages, and much of the essential character of the media has religious underpinnings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set is a thematically-arranged encyclopedia covering the social, political, and material culture of America during the Jim Crow Era. What was daily life really like for ordinary African American people in Jim Crow America, the hundred-year period of enforced legal segregation that began immediately after the Civil War and continued until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965? What did they eat, wear, believe, and think? How did they raise their children? How did they interact with government? What did they value? What did they do for fun? This Daily Life encyclopedia explores the lives of average people through the examination of social, cultural, and material history. Supported by the most current research, the multivolume set examines social history topics—including family, political, religious, and economic life—as it illuminates elements of a society's emotional life, interactions, opinions, views, beliefs, intimate relationships, and connections between individuals and the greater world. It is broken up into topical sections, each dealing with a different aspect of cultural life. Each section opens with an introductory essay, followed by A–Z entries on various aspects of that topic.
