This is your path.” She stood for a moment longer, staring into the darkness. “Breeze, trust me. This is the way you need to go if you want to get home.” Lowering her eyebrows, she stared at him. “Why should I trust you?” He shrugged. “Maybe you should. Maybe you shouldn’t, but the only way you’ll know is if you step into the dark.”
Book Synopsis Floating on a Malayan Breeze by : Sudhir Thomas Vadaketh
Download or read book Floating on a Malayan Breeze written by Sudhir Thomas Vadaketh and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens after a country splits apart? Forty-seven years ago Singapore separated from Malaysia. Since then, the two countries have developed along their own paths. Malaysia has given preference to the majority Malay Muslims—the bumiputera, or sons of the soil. Singapore, meanwhile, has tried to build a meritocracy—ostensibly colour-blind, yet more encouraging perhaps to some Singaporeans than to others. How have these policies affected ordinary people? How do these two divergent nations now see each other and the world around them? Seeking answers to these questions, two Singaporeans set off to cycle around Peninsular Malaysia, armed with a tent, two pairs of clothes and a daily budget of three US dollars each. They spent 30 days on the road, cycling through every Malaysian state, and chatting with hundreds of Malaysians. Not satisfied, they then went on to interview many more people in Malaysia and Singapore. What they found are two countries that have developed economically but are still struggling to find their souls.

Download or read book Burning the Breeze written by Lisa Hendrickson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WILLA Literary Award Finalist in Creative Nonfiction Finalist, Evans Handcart Award In the middle of the Great Depression, Montana native Julia Bennett arrived in New York City with no money and an audacious business plan: to identify and visit easterners who could afford to spend their summers at her brand new dude ranch near Ennis, Montana. Julia, a big-game hunter whom friends described as "a clever shot with both rifle and shotgun," flouted gender conventions to build guest ranches in Montana and Arizona that attracted world-renowned entertainers and artists. Bennett's entrepreneurship, however, was not a new family development. During the Civil War, her widowed grandmother and her seven-year-old daughter--Bennett's mother--set out from Missouri on a ten-month journey with little more than a yoke of oxen, a covered wagon, and the clothes on their backs. They faced countless heartbreaks and obstacles as they struggled to build a new life in the Montana Territory. Burning the Breeze is the story of three generations of women and their intrepid efforts to succeed in the American West. Excerpts from diaries, letters, and scrapbooks, along with rare family photos, help bring their vibrant personalities to life.

Download or read book Sistah Vegan written by A. Breeze Harper and published by Lantern Books. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sistah Vegan is a series of narratives, critical essays, poems, and reflections from a diverse community of North American black-identified vegans. Collectively, these activists are de-colonizing their bodies and minds via whole-foods veganism. By kicking junk-food habits, the more than thirty contributors all show the way toward longer, stronger, and healthier lives. Suffering from type-2 diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, and overweight need not be the way women of color are doomed to be victimized and live out their mature lives. There are healthy alternatives. Sistah Vegan is not about preaching veganism or vegan fundamentalism. Rather, the book is about how a group of black-identified female vegans perceive nutrition, food, ecological sustainability, health and healing, animal rights, parenting, social justice, spirituality, hair care, race, gender-identification, womanism, and liberation that all go against the (refined and bleached) grain of our dysfunctional society. Thought-provoking for the identification and dismantling of environmental racism, ecological devastation, and other social injustices, Sistah Vegan is an in-your-face handbook for our time. It calls upon all of us to make radical changes for the betterment of ourselves, our planet, and--by extension--everyone.

Book Synopsis Surrender Tomorrow by : Alphonso Johnson
Download or read book Surrender Tomorrow written by Alphonso Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, Surrender Tomorrow, is about a long bus trip where people are shown who they really are. They are upwardly mobile blacks who do not always make the best decisions. One of the main characters is Francois, who has one foot in the crime world and the other in the legit one. Francois has family that he has to impress, like his father, back home in Orlando, Florida, who look up to him. However, the mob is chasing him, and they are curious bunch with funny names like Cool Breeze from the old Blaxploitation movies from the seventies. And there is Surrender Tomorrow herself, who is a real woman, but you are never sure if she is not mobbed up. This novel started out by being a book of short stories. Right when you think you figured out who Francoiss father is and his involvement with a young woman, you get pulled right back into the caper. It is a ride of sorts that, when you read about crimes happening, one seldom guesses the characters. These are the characters, and they are a comical bunch. It goes to show how Francoiss family comes to grips with having a son who might be doing the wrong thing and traditional folkways of new immigrants migrating to America. For some people, they are willing to risk all for love, others money.

Book excerpt: For Meade Breeze, returning to the place he considers home could prove dangerous-especially now that unscrupulous developers are destroying the once pristine Cayo Costa. Breeze has been through this before. Little can stop greedy men from robbing resources from the many to sell to the wealthy few. They tried it in the Glades and on Captiva Island, as well as many other far-flung locations-but Breeze was always one step ahead. Living completely off the grid has its advantages. It makes a person invisible to all but a select few. When heavy equipment ends up mired in saltwater and a construction dock is destroyed, Breeze becomes the number one suspect. But where is he? Who is he? Grainy security photos only show a maniac at the controls of the heavy equipment, wearing a dark hoodie and mask-it could be anyone. With the local sheriff gunning for him and the U.S. Marshals Service trying to keep him under wraps, Breeze soon learns that being invisible isn't all it's cracked up to be.
