Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I first heard of Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI) in January of 1997 at the office of a Pediatric Gastroenterologist who had just performed a procto-sigmoidoscopy and biopsy on my 7 week old son. He told me that Maxs digestive problem was MSPI and that it would be much easier for me if I stopped breastfeeding now and put him on a special formula. Of course, at that moment my head was spinning; I had finally found out the reason my son had been screaming the first 7 weeks of his life and though I wanted to continue breastfeeding I did not want to cause him anymore pain. The Doctor told me that there was a diet I could follow to continue breastfeeding, but that it was very difficult to follow. Wanting to make the best choice for my son I stopped breast-feeding that day and started him on formula. In retrospect, the physician was right, even though I regret that I did not continue breastfeeding, with the demands of a new infant, and trying to figure out a complicated diet, would have been completely overwhelming. I knew though, that if I had any more children, I would try any diet possible in order to breastfeed. So, during the first few months of my pregnancy with my second son, Nate, I began preparing for the MSPI diet. Determined that I would not lack for good things to eat, and that I would find chocolate that was acceptable on this diet, I started shopping. Little by little, I found many alternatives for the food I previously enjoyed (the only exception being cheese!). I found chocolate, cake, brownies, casseroles, pasta, rice milk, rice, breads, fast food, eating out, and so much more, even a substitute for ice cream! It just took a lot of planning and a bit of ingenuity. This book is intended for the mother that has just heard her infant has milk soy protein intolerance and to begin the diet right away. This will help the mother find food she can eat, and thus continue breastfeeding her child.

Now it's been completely revised and updated in a new fourth edition—non-doctrinaire, informative, and friendly, it is the most accessible and authoritative book, as much required reading for expecting and new mothers as a pregnancy guide and baby name book. All healthy mothers should consider breastfeeding for the first year of a baby’s life, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and this is the book that will help women give their babies the healthiest start possible. Written by Sally Wendkos Olds and a new co-author, Laura Marks, M.D., The Complete Book of Breastfeeding, Fourth Edition offers a comprehensive introduction to breastfeeding—how to get ready before the baby arrives; how to involve fathers and siblings; and the best diet and foods for mom. There are sections on dealing with problems at the hospital; extensive information on exclusive pumping (EPing); the best systems for giving supplementary bottles to a breastfed baby; the safest sleep scenarios for babies; breastfeeding in public, including laws affecting breastfeeding mothers. New data about preterm infants is presented, and special situations—multiples, breast cancer, overweight and large-breasted women, breast surgery, tattoos and piercings—are also discussed in detail. An expanded chapter on weaning features sections on breastfeeding past infancy. Also new is an appendix of online resources.

Book excerpt: The hot topic these days is foods that do more than just nourish your body. Antioxidants, prebiotics, probiotics- all are in the news. Through the ages, certain foods and herbs have been promoted to new mothers to increase their milk supplies. These foods and herbs, called galactogogues, likely increase milk production by increasing prolactin or oxytocin to initiate the breastmilk letdown reflex and aid in breastmilk ejection. Pharmacist Frank Nice and his wife, Myung Hee, have pulled together over 200 recipes featuring major and minor galactogogues in this cookbook. Dr. Nice includes dosage, uses, and cautions about each of the galactogogues. They have included many old family favorites passed down from their Polish and Korean ancestors. Some recipes include unusual ingredients - Stinging Nettle Pesto with Ravioli, Corn Bread with Red Clover Blossoms, Hot Chocolate Mousse with Marshmallow Root Fluff. Others have ingredients that are quite common - Pineapple Raisin Oat Bran Muffin, Sauteed Brussels Sprouts with Garlic and Olive Oil, Avocado Shrimp Salad, Chicken Tacos. All have been taste-tested and confirmed to be delicious! If you are a new mom struggling with milk supply or if you just want to insure that your milk supply stays strong, try some of these recipes. Even if you aren't breastfeeding, the recipes in this cookbook are worth trying!

Book excerpt: After labor, it’s time for rest: A gentle guide to zuo yuezi, the ancient Chinese practice of postpartum self-care, including sixty simple recipes. The first forty days after the birth of a child offer an essential and fleeting period of rest and recovery for the new mother. Based on Heng Ou’s own postpartum experience with zuo yuezi, a set period of “confinement” in which a woman remains at home focusing on healing and bonding with her baby, The First Forty Days revives the lost art of caring for the mother after birth. As modern mothers are pushed to prematurely “bounce back” after delivering their babies, and are often left alone to face the physical and emotional challenges of this new stage of their lives, the first forty days provide a lifeline—a source of connection, nourishment, and guidance. This book includes sixty simple recipes for healing soups, replenishing meals and snacks, and calming and lactation-boosting teas, all formulated to support the unique needs of the new mother. In addition to recipes, this warm and encouraging guide offers advice on arranging a system of help during the postpartum period, navigating relationship challenges, and honoring the significance of pregnancy and birth. Fully illustrated, it is a practical guide and inspirational read for all new mothers and mothers-to-be—the perfect ally during the first weeks with a new baby. “Bringing our attention back to the importance of the postpartum period for new mothers helps to create space for this essential period of integration and recovery . . . an invaluable companion during the first 40 days and beyond.” —Ricki Lake & Abby Epstein, filmmakers, The Business of Being Born
