Book excerpt: Violence. I’m addicted to it. It’s how I feel alive. It’s the only thing that’s real any more. And now I have to sit around and discuss it like it’s physics or calculus. I can’t do it. I can’t pretend that it’s some sterile academic topic. Violence isn’t sterile. It isn’t calm. It’s pulsing. It’s alive. It’s my drug. Until I met Abby, I never wanted anything beyond the next fight. Never considered that I might finally find a way back to the land of the living. Now? Now I find myself dreaming of a woman with golden eyes. But I can never be with her. Because I am not whole. And I never will be again. But I cannot stay away. And loving her might finally be what breaks me.

Book excerpt: A swoony, small town romance from USA Today Bestselling Author J.H. Croix! My rules: No players. No flirts. No cocky jerks. My exception: Dawson Marsh. Dawson might be every girl’s crush in this small town, but not mine. I can appreciate him from a distance, and that suits me fine. Except that one time he kissed me. Up close and personal. Once is a mistake. But the second time? Sublime. The man should come with some kind of a warning sign: Not safe for work! Hot to the touch! But what kind of girl can’t handle a little friends with benefits action, right? The one who missed the most important warning: Danger, risk of falling. Evie & Dawson’s story is perfect for readers who love small town romance, firefighters, broody alpha heroes, smart sassy heroines, friends to lovers, opposites attract, slow burn, emotional romance with a dash of angst, plenty of swoon, and a deeply protective grumpy hero. *A full-length, standalone romance.

For twelve years, I lived alone in my cabin, building a life with my two bare hands. I was free from their rules, their policies, and their lies. They are a cult. My father is their leader. To protect my brother's widow, I'm making her my wife. It's her only way out. But drawn to the purity in her deep blue eyes and the innocence of her gentle voice, I wonder if I'm not the biggest monster of them all. I have to save her from them and myself. Because every second I spend with this timid woman, I fight the urge to claim her. Own her. Make her truly mine. And I know it's wrong. I will break her fall--if I don't break her first.

Book excerpt: A highly original theory of how the mind-brain works, based on the author's study of single neuronal cells. In I of the Vortex, Rodolfo Llinas, a founding father of modern brain science, presents an original view of the evolution and nature of mind. According to Llinas, the "mindness state" evolved to allow predictive interactions between mobile creatures and their environment. He illustrates the early evolution of mind through a primitive animal called the "sea squirt." The mobile larval form has a brainlike ganglion that receives sensory information about the surrounding environment. As an adult, the sea squirt attaches itself to a stationary object and then digests most of its own brain. This suggests that the nervous system evolved to allow active movement in animals. To move through the environment safely, a creature must anticipate the outcome of each movement on the basis of incoming sensory data. Thus the capacity to predict is most likely the ultimate brain function. One could even say that Self is the centralization of prediction. At the heart of Llinas's theory is the concept of oscillation. Many neurons possess electrical activity, manifested as oscillating variations in the minute voltages across the cell membrane. On the crests of these oscillations occur larger electrical events that are the basis for neuron-to-neuron communication. Like cicadas chirping in unison, a group of neurons oscillating in phase can resonate with a distant group of neurons. This simultaneity of neuronal activity is the neurobiological root of cognition. Although the internal state that we call the mind is guided by the senses, it is also generated by the oscillations within the brain. Thus, in a certain sense, one could say that reality is not all "out there," but is a kind of virtual reality.

With insight and clarity, he encourages us to make health a daily habit.” - David Feldshuh, M.D., Ph.D., Pulitzer nominee for Miss Ever Boys’ based on the Tuskegee Study, professor of theater at Cornell University, and practicing emergency room physician. “If we are going to help make a healthy world it is essential that men become kind and soft and step down from the altar of power. These things were not spoken in medical school maybe because most all the teachers were male, and psychiatry did not address the unhealthy features of the male personality. Thank you, Peter, for showing the possibility for a healthier world, making healthier men.” - Patch Adams, M.D., a physician, comedian, social activist, clown, and founder of the Gesundheit! To share this type of information with senior men is an admired goal of Dr. Dorsen and myself. I recommend Dr. Dorsen’s sequel to Dr. D’s Handbook as a helpful guide to anyone interested in this age group.” - Barry Mink, M.D. was catcher for the Cincinnati Reds out of high school with 40 years as a practicing internal and sports medicine at the Aspen Clinic. Dr. Mink has been the team physician for the US Biathlon Team and Nordic team physician at both the 1980 and 1994 Winter Olympics. “I came to this book for the information, but I stayed for the inspiration. There is lots of new information, even for an experienced physician. But more importantly, this book offers the inspiration to implement a healthy lifestyle as we pass from our 60s and beyond.” - Edward Feinberg, M.D., MPH, chairman emeritus department of ophthalmology; faculty retina-vitreous service.

Book excerpt: I thought I could do this. I thought I could leave the war behind. I was wrong. I can’t do this. I can’t go to class and pretend like everything is normal. That I’m normal. I’m not. I’ve lost everything that matters to me. But I made a promise. And if I’m going to keep that promise, I have to focus. I have to pretend that I belong on this southern campus that drips with old money. And I have to pass stats. That’s where Beth comes in. I’m terrified she’ll see through me. That the careful lies and easy smile won’t be enough to convince her that everything is fine. That she’ll see how broken I really am. But there’s something about her that draws me closer. A sadness in her eyes that am powerless to resist. I should walk away. Protect her from the broken, darkness in me. Before we both fall into something neither of us can control Stay focused. Get a job. Save her father’s life. Beth Lamont knows far too much about the harsh realities of life her gilded classmates have only read about in class. She’ll do whatever it takes to take care of her father, even if that means tutoring a guy like Noah - a guy who represents everything she hates about the war, soldiers and what the Army has done to her family. Noah Warren doesn’t know how to be a student. All he knows is war. But he’s going to college now to fulfill a promise and he doesn’t break his promises. Except he doesn’t count on his tutor being drop dead gorgeous and distracting as hell. One look at Beth threatens to unravel the careful lies Noah has constructed around him. A simple arrangement turns into something neither of them can deny. And a war that neither of them can forget could destroy them both.
