Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are the cause of many legends, myths, and fairy tales. And they still live among us. Human bones are showing up in various concrete structures, all stemming from a site that has been shut down for years. Where exactly are they coming from? Olmsly Morrow thinks it’s more than just foul play by humans, so he calls on Trenna Cross and Reece Kamrose, although Reece has no idea why he’s been tapped for a super-secret government job. He’s just a farmer. Right, and Trenna is just an actress as well. In truth, Trenna is also a coh, having trained all her life to fight Breachers. But Reece is not; he has no “abilities.” So why was he called and partnered up with Trenna? Whatever the reason, they’re committed to solving the murders of the gang members, and ridding San Antonio of its otherworldly infestation. Through it all, Trenna and Reece know there’s an undeniable connection, and how nice would it be to be with someone who truly knows who and what she is? But a relationship could never last between the two, right? They’re too far away, too different from each other…or are they?

Book excerpt: Boothe lives life on the road, traveling wherever he’s needed to cleanse the area, never knowing where that may be. He’s an exorciser, blessed by the church and trained to remove demons who have possessed humans. He didn’t know taking a break in a small-town bar would change his life forever. Lady Parr, a bartender at Brewski’s, has seen her fair share of belligerent customers. When one is particularly difficult, a tattooed, bearded stranger steps in to help. She’s intrigued by Boothe, and although it’s more forward that she’s ever been, she doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to get to know him better. But what she learns while in his hotel room changes everything she thought she knew about the world she lives in. Now that Lady knows what Boothe does for a living, he realizes she’s the first woman who hasn’t run screaming. There’s just something about her. She’s special, but he can’t bring her into his life. It’s not safe…although it doesn’t take long to discover she’s not safe without him. The demons are targeting her now, but why? She’s like a magnet, drawing them to her. The same way they’re drawn to him. Could it be…?

Book excerpt: Wanting to wind down after a week-long seminar, U.S. Federal Marshal Stokker Teague finds himself in a hotel bar with plans to celebrate with a few drinks. Seeing a cute female sitting alone a few tables away, he’s interested and decides to make his move to see if she’ll bite. He’s got some time to kill before his flight home in a couple of day, so why not? Diane takes the bait, but their one-night stand ends up being so much more than either of them expected. Diane knows she’s getting sidetracked from her job but this time it can wait. She deserves some fun, even though she’s sure it won’t last. When time starts ticking on a job, Diane must strike when the opportunity presents itself. She takes her shot and runs. It breaks her heart to leave Stokker, but she convinces herself it couldn’t last. Her job would always keep them apart—except it seems fate has other plans. They keep running into each other no matter how much she wants to stay away and keep Stokker from finding out the truth. When Stokker discovers who Diane really is and what she is, he’s torn between his job and his heart. Does he turn her over to the police for murder, or should he allow her to keep delivering her brand of vigilante justice?

Book Synopsis Colour-Coded by : Constance Backhouse
Download or read book Colour-Coded written by Constance Backhouse and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-11-20 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. Winner of the Joseph Brant Award, presented by the Ontario Historical Society
