Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A concise guide linking the history of trumpet to performance . . . includes information on band music, bugle calls, orchestral repertoire, and jazz.” —American Reference Books Annual Unlike the violin, which has flourished largely unchanged for close to four centuries, the trumpet has endured numerous changes in design and social status from the battlefield to the bandstand and ultimately to the concert hall. This colorful past is reflected in the arsenal of instruments a classical trumpeter employs during a performance, sometimes using no fewer than five in different keys and configurations to accurately reproduce music from the past. With the rise in historically inspired performances comes the necessity for trumpeters to know more about their instrument’s heritage, its repertoire, and different performance practices for old music on new and period-specific instruments. More than just a history of the trumpet, this essential reference book is a comprehensive guide for musicians who bring that musical history to life. “A compendium of trumpet history with short, fact-filled chapters. It will serve both amateur and professional musicians alike, and few could read this text without learning something. Fanfares and Finesse is a thorough sampling of trumpet topics, including something of interest for every trumpet player, brass enthusiast, or curious reader.” —Pan Pipes “Trumpet players in a wide variety of situations and at many levels will find a great deal of useful information, presented in a clear, engaging, reader-friendly way yet backed by solid research. While some topics are covered in more depth than others, Koehler’s breadth of vision and thoroughness are commendable . . . For all trumpeters and anyone who teaches them.” —Choice

Book excerpt: Looking for music to utilize as an alternative to requiring your full band to play for a graduation ceremony? Are you asked to provide music for graduation ceremonies at lower grade levels other than senior graduation? If so, you can easily program this arrangement with other ensemble music. Focus on a small brass ensemble or the brass section of your band. This work will be loved by everyone. This arrangement of The Grand March from Verdi's opera Aida is intended to accompany and complement Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches 1 and 4. They are the popular, recognizable, and traditional prelude and recessional works played at graduation ceremonies. This work could easily be used before or after the graduates' promenade, or during the ceremony as a featured work. The arrangement is scored for brass quintet (2 trumpets, Horn, and 2 trombones). However, it includes parts for Tuba and T.C. Baritone. The Horn in F part doubles the 2nd Trombone and Tuba and T.C. Baritone double the 3rd Trombone providing flexibility of use. The range in the first trumpet part extends once to a high C. This arrangement is in Concert Key of Bb Major with a short contrasting section in Db. It is a relatively easy arrangement, playable by capable middle level and high school players as a quintet or a brass ensemble with varied number of performers. The purchaser of this volume is free to make copies of the parts for rehearsal and performance purposes. So, once you've prepared the parts for the first rehearsal/performance, file this volume away and it will be there, complete, without missing parts, for years to come. Scroll below to videos to see and hear the score as played in Finale.

Book excerpt: Trumpets and Other High Brass is a series of books available in five volumes, illustrated with instruments from the Utley Collection at the National Music Museum and other major collections. Informed by the most current scholarship and new imaging technologies, it will comprise a comprehensive history of the trumpet and related instruments and a complete photographic catalog of the Utley Collection. Volume 1 traces the development of high brass instruments without valves or keys from antiquity through the 20th-century Baroque trumpet revival. It covers ethnic instruments from many cultures, the emergence of the trumpet in Europe and dominant designs of the 16th through 18th centuries. The inclusion of military and signal trumpets, bugles, and such oddities as bicycle bugles and walking-stick trumpets enhances an already rich survey. Available only in hardcover, Volume 1 includes 358 pages in an 8-1/2" x 11" format and features more than 800 illustrations in full color. The book is accompanied by a DVD with illustrative musical examples performed on instruments from the Utley Collection. - Publisher.
