Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER • The acclaimed chef behind the Michelin-starred Mister Jiu’s restaurant shares the past, present, and future of Chinese cooking in America through 90 mouthwatering recipes. ONE OF THE TEN BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle • ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: Glamour • “Brandon Jew’s affection for San Francisco’s Chinatown and his own Chinese heritage is palpable in this cookbook, which is both a recipe collection and a portrait of a district rich in history.”—Fuchsia Dunlop, James Beard Award-winning author of The Food of Sichuan Brandon Jew trained in the kitchens of California cuisine pioneers and Michelin-starred Italian institutions before finding his way back to Chinatown and the food of his childhood. Through deeply personal recipes and stories about the neighborhood that often inspires them, this groundbreaking cookbook is an intimate account of how Chinese food became American food and the making of a Chinese American chef. Jew takes inspiration from classic Chinatown recipes to create innovative spins like Sizzling Rice Soup, Squid Ink Wontons, Orange Chicken Wings, Liberty Roast Duck, Mushroom Mu Shu, and Banana Black Sesame Pie. From the fundamentals of Chinese cooking to master class recipes, he interweaves recipes and techniques with stories about their origins in Chinatown and in his own family history. And he connects his classical training and American roots to Chinese traditions in chapters celebrating dim sum, dumplings, and banquet-style parties. With more than a hundred photographs of finished dishes as well as moving and evocative atmospheric shots of Chinatown, this book is also an intimate portrait—a look down the alleyways, above the tourist shops, and into the kitchens—of the neighborhood that changed the flavor of America.

Download or read book Three Little Birds written by Liana Stemp and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Little Birds is the raw and inspiring personal account of what it’s like to experience the devastation of infant loss. Written at the time of her experience and after, the book is based on Liana Stemp, whose life through pregnancy, birth and babies has been anything but easy. Opening with telling the story of the past seven years, it includes what it’s like to experience difficult pregnancies, unimaginable miscarriages, and the hell of going through birth trauma, including the consequences thereafter, which ultimately led to PTSD and post-natal depression. We experience the pregnancy with Liana, which turns out to be a nine-month emotional rollercoaster, from experiencing sudden prenatal epilepsy which results in a car crash with her daughter, to find out her unborn child had CDH, a serious health complication. Not only this but also the back and forth as to whether the pregnancy could continue as the baby continued to grow. The relief that it could continue, only then to discover the extent of baby Brandon’s condition and the subsequent ups and downs of the neonatal intensive care unit. Finally, this ends in the shattering experience of watching your baby slip away. We then glimpse the ‘after’ – brutally honest, it’s an eye-opening look into the world of grief and how others’ kindness can be beautiful and difficult at the same time. All in all, the book covers a lot of subjects surrounding pregnancy, miscarriage, birth trauma, baby loss and a year in the life of a mother living with grief, with the spiral of Covid-19 happening to fall amidst it all. Three Little Birds is ultimately an inspirational, yet a harrowing journey through infant loss and beyond.

Download or read book Todd Solondz written by Julian Murphet and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Films like Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness established Todd Solondz as independent cinema's premier satirist. Blending a trademark black humor into atmospheres of grueling bleakness, Solondz repeatedly takes moviegoers into a bland suburban junk space peopled by the damaged, the neglected, and the depraved.Julian Murphet appraises the career of the controversial, if increasingly ignored, indie film auteur. Through close readings and a discussion with the director, Murphet dissects how Solondz's themes and techniques serve stories laden with hot-button topics like pedophilia, rape, and family and systemic cruelty. Solondz's uncompromising return to the same motifs, stylistic choices, and characters reject any idea of aesthetic progression. Instead, he embraces an art of diminishing returns that satirizes the laws of valuation sustaining what we call cinema. It also reflects both Solondz's declining box office fortunes and the changing economics of independent film in an era of financial contraction.

Book Synopsis The Forgotten Ghost Soldiers of Wwii by : John A. Eisler Jr.
Download or read book The Forgotten Ghost Soldiers of Wwii written by John A. Eisler Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My father would always read to me or tell me stories from a picture book so one day when I was young I asked him to draw me a picture and tell me a war story. I enlisted in the military because these terrible men were trying to hurt my friends and family. They would make them walk on long marches then lock them up like caged animals. They would lock up everyone in their family even the little girls. Being one of the best hunters I was selected to serve on a team with men from other countries and travel all around the world helping free these people. One time we were dropped off in a little rubber boat to paddle our way to an island during the biggest storm ever. The wind and rain were blowing and the waves made it almost impossible to stay inside the boat. We went in to hunt down the bad guys like Daniel Boone or David Crocket. We were the unknown men with no faces or name tags that silently moved through the night being known for civil war tactics as the advance unit of Ghost Soldiers. We had to live off of the land eating whatever we could find like berries, fruit, or hunting the animals. We would throw hand grenades into the water that would bring up the snakes, alligators, fish or whatever was living in the water. The islands were the most beautiful places in the world with all the green plants and the most beautiful flowers and colored birds. We freed the people that were taken prisoner and one camp there was a beautiful young girl by the name of Virginia and she is the person I named you after. The dream of someday having a daughter of my own that I could love and protect gave me the willpower needed in combat.
