Book excerpt: In 1863, civil war is raging in the United States. Victorine Meurent is posing nude, in Paris, for paintings that will be heralded as the beginning of modern art: Manet's Olympia and Picnic on the Grass. However, Victorine's persistent desire is not to be a model but to be a painter herself. In order to live authentically, she finds the strength to flout the expectations of her parents, bourgeois society, and the dominant male artists (whom she knows personally) while never losing her capacity for affection, kindness, and loyalty. Possessing both the incisive mind of a critic and the intuitive and unconventional impulses of an artist, Victorine and her survival instincts are tested in 1870, when the Prussian army lays siege to Paris and rat becomes a culinary delicacy. Drēma Drudge's powerful first novel Victorine not only gives this determined and gifted artist back to us but also recreates an era of important transition into the modern world.

Book excerpt: This monograph of French art theorist and philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman centers around a single sculpture: Alberto Giacometti s "Cube" from 1934 (Kunsthaus Zurich), possibly his most peculiar and atypical creation, being his only abstract sculptural work within a wider oeuvre, which consistently had the exploration of reality as its main objective. By conducting a meticulous formal analysis of the sculpture, and consulting sketches, etchings, other sculptural works and texts of Giacometti originating from 1932 to 1935, the formative years of "Cube," Didi-Huberman unwinds a net of questions, hypotheses, and historical contextualizations in which he envelops his investigation to unfold for the reader a wide spectrum of new perspectives. "Cube," as it turns out, marks an exception. It is a self-containing work, barred from any stylistic kinship and functions prismatically at the same time, delineates Giacometti s transition from his surrealist to his realist phase and thus contains in nuce principles which underlie his entire aesthetic understanding: the relation of the body to geometry, the problem of dimensionality, the separation between face and skull, the question of the portrait, which, in regards to this sculpture, prompts Didi-Huberman to develop the new notion of an abstract anthropomorphism . Referencing the works of Freud, Bataille, Leiris and Carl Einstein, which had a lasting influence on Giacometti as well, this study presents the reader with an exuberant plurality of methodological approaches and readings. Out of a newly arising sensibility for a formal analysis, Didi-Huberman develops his very own anthropological perspective on the notion of the image."

Book excerpt: "The Palais Galliera is paying homage to the couturier Cristobal Balenciaga (1865-1972) with an extra-mural exhibition at the Musée Bourdelle entitled : 'Balenciaga, l'oeuvre au noir'. The exhibition resonates with the black tones of an alchemist of haute couture : variations of black repeated in over a hundred of pieces from the Galliera collections and the archives of Maison Balenciaga...The exhibition resounds with a black harmony of an Haute Couture alchemist. Black motivated Balenciaga : the backbone of his work was inspired by the folklore and traditions of his Spanish childhood. Black was this exceptionally skilled tailor's preference. Black was a monastic influence on the master, about whom Dior once said: "Clothes were his religion". Balenciaga saw black as a vibrant matter whether it be opaque or transparent, matt or shiny - a dazzling interplay of light, that owes as much to the luxurious quality of the fabrics as to the apparent simplicity of the cut. A lace highlight, embroidery, guipure, a heavy drape of silk velvet and, hey presto, you have a skirt, a bolero, a mantilla, a cape reinvented as a coat, a coat tailored as a cape... ...Every piece is magnificent, from day clothes to cocktail dresses and sumptuous evening outfits lined in silk taffeta, edged with fringes, decorated with satin ribbons, jet beads, sequins... more than hundred couture variations of black are the treasures of the Galliera collections and the Maison Balenciaga's archives. The exhibition is located in the Musée Bourdelle where the sculptures mirror the pure sculptural effect of Cristobal Balenciaga's stunning creations"--http://www.palaisgalliera.paris.fr/en/exhibitions/balenciaga-loeuvre-au-noir

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the significant growth of sculpture as an artistic form in Europe and America from 1900-1945. Using a clearly-defined thematic structure it identifies key issues and developments throughout this important period in the history of art. Individualchapters cover: public sculpture, the monument, the object, image-making, the built environment, the figurative ideal, and different materials. These themes broadly reflect the changing cultural and political climate of a turbulent period which included two world wars, each preceded by widespreadrising nationalism. The practice of sculpture is considered within the wider artistic context of painting and architecture and the development of international art markets. Auguste Rodin, whose ground-breaking exhibition opened in Paris in 1900, serves as the book's point of departure, and as arecurrent point of reference.

Book excerpt: Alongside Edvard Munch, Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) is Norway's most famous artist. He made his debut in 1889, and during the 1890's he established himself as one of Norway's most promising sculptors. His breakthrough came in 1908 with the celestial monument to the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, and during the first decade of the 20th century he made several critically acclaimed portraits and monuments. From 1907 he became gradually more preoccupied with his great Fountain, and what was to become the Vigeland Park in Oslo, today one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. In this catalogue, Gustav Vigeland will be presented with the following artists: Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), Constantin Meunier (1831-1905), Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) and Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929). The aim of the book is to place Vigeland's artistic development in a broader art historical context. Parallels will focus on Vigeland's own interest in the selected artists, the formal and thematic similarities and differences between their works, as well as Vigeland's development towards a more simplified form, contextualized by a juxtaposition with Maillol and Bourdelle.

Book excerpt: In this magically evocative novel, William Maxwell explores the enigmatic gravity of the past, which compels us to keep explaining it even as it makes liars out of us every time we try. On a winter morning in the 1920s, a shot rings out on a farm in rural Illinois. A man named Lloyd Wilson has been killed. And the tenuous friendship between two lonely teenagers—one privileged yet neglected, the other a troubled farm boy—has been shattered. Fifty years later, one of those boys—now a grown man—tries to reconstruct the events that led up to the murder. In doing so, he is inevitably drawn back to his lost friend Cletus, who has the misfortune of being the son of Wilson's killer and who in the months before witnessed things that Maxwell's narrator can only guess at. Out of memory and imagination, the surmises of children and the destructive passions of their parents, Maxwell creates a luminous American classic of youth and loss.
