Download or read book A Retreat written by John Cuthbert Hedley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-29 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following Discourses or Meditations are intended to furnish matter for a Retreat of eight or ten days. Each of them consists of devout considerations, followed by points for mental prayer. The considerations are to be read over slowly and with devotional attention; and the points are to be wrought out with as much fervour of affective acts as may be possible. Each discourse, with its affections, is calculated to afford matter for about an hour's exercise. The Retreat is intended for priests, religious, and persons in the world. Here and there will be found remarks addressed more especially to one or other of these classes; but the point of view taken is, on the whole, one which concerns the human soul in its relations with its Creator and Redeemer, and which does not depend on any obligation arising from vows or state of life. Even in such meditations as "The Religious Promise," "Obedience," and "poverty," principles are treated which lie at the root of all Christian practice, and aspirations are proposed which will be found natural and useful by every heart which seriously desires to give itself to God.

Download or read book Be Not Troubled written by Jeffrey Kirby and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 250 years, Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade has offered inspiration and spiritual balm for those plagued with doubt, anxiety, and fear. Motivated by his own life-changing encounter with this spiritual classic and the popular resurgence in practicing Christian mindfulness, bestselling author and retreat leader Rev. Jeffrey Kirby serves up six meditations, rooted in Caussade’s work, for today’s reader and presents them as a personal retreat. Perfect for anyone looking to renew their trust in God and live freely in the present moment, Be Not Troubled invites you to let go of what you can’t control and discover a place of deep serenity in God. How does the contemporary person who is constantly forced to multitask, is fragmented and torn in different directions, and feels more connection through technology than through face-to-face interaction come to know and experience God’s presence? In Be Not Troubled, Kirby draws on his decades of experience as a popular retreat leader and speaker to offer you the wisdom of Caussade distilled into a six-day personal retreat that equips you to embrace the present moment and shake fear from your mind—all by recognizing the power of God. This process begins with time-tested tools drawn from the renowned spiritual classic Abandonment to Divine Providence, which presents a series of influential spiritual reflections from Caussade, a beloved eighteenth-century French Jesuit. In popularizing this classic for today’s readers, Be Not Troubled rejects a spirituality of fear and shame by introducing you to God as a loving provider who knows you and wills your happiness; guides you in personally surrendering your will to God—an essential step in developing deep faith; helps you see God in the details as you recognize ordinary moments as opportunities to experience God and his love for you; and instructs you in embracing the sacrament of the present moment, dispelling doubt and anxiety from your life. Practical steps, invitations to practice presence, and reflective prayers guide you through these spiritual habits, which are broken out into six days of brief, accessible meditations that can be completed in the midst of your daily life. Rather than the future or the past, and rather than in cyberspace or somewhere else, God is found in this moment and in this place. The present moment can be lived and cherished as a sacrament, a visible sign of invisible graces. And it’s in this sacrament that we can most know ourselves and encounter the living God.
Book Synopsis The Spiritual Exercises of an Eight Days Retreat by : Bonaventure Hammer
Download or read book The Spiritual Exercises of an Eight Days Retreat written by Bonaventure Hammer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Exercises of an Eight Days Retreat But few people in the world understand what a spiritual retreat means. To separate one's self from family, friends and business in order to treat with God in holy solitude on the affairs of eternity, on the world which is to come, seems to the majority of men useful at most for religious. Have, then, people of the world not to think of religious truths? Are these subjects for the devout only? Can a man of the world say, "I am perfect, what more do you want of me?" Well, suppose he might say so: this conclusion would only be the result of a serious self-consideration. Now this serious self-consideration of one's soul is the work, the object of a spiritual retreat. Is it asking even the business man too much to lay aside for a few days his daily cares to settle the only necessary affair for which alone he is in the world; to see to and consider his eternal interests? Moreover, will not our very temporal affairs draw profit from the retreat? Is it not true that patience, freedom of mind, and self-control are great elements of success? Are there not moments in the lives of business men, when there is the greatest need of resignation and courage in order to avoid falling into despair? This courage, this confiding hope is the fruit of a spiritual retreat. It is true, we have at times in parishes the ordinary public mission exercises - excellent indeed as far as they go. But are the fruits thereof complete? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
