Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. The book is intended to provide a graduate level teaching resource as well as a mathematically oriented account for a general reader in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or scientific computation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow is started suddenly with a constant velocity and is parallel with the plate. This simple flow configuration is used to compare the accuracy and the speed of various numerical methods and to examine the effect of the far field boundary conditions and the variable mesh size on the flow. The governing Navier-Stokes equations are expressed in terms of vorticity and stream function. The (parabolic) vorticity equation is approximated by two finite difference methods. The (elliptic) stream function equation is approximated by two relaxation schemes. The details of the flow field around the flat plate are computed for Reynolds number equal to 4 and 993. One of the interesting results is that the velocity at the outer edge of the boundary layer exceeds that of the free stream and the maximum velocity overshoot is 9.5% at Re = 4 and 5.4% at Re - 993. The implicit alternating direction method is two to three times faster than the explicit method. (Author).

Gupta and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relaxation of the accelerating-gas boundary layer to the test-gas boundary layer over a flat plate in an expansion tube is analyzed. Several combinations of test gas and acceleration gas are considered. The problem is treated in two conically similar limits: (1) when the time lag between the arrival of the shock and the interface at the leading edge of the plate is very large, and (2) when this lag is negligible. The time-dependent laminar-boundary-layer equations of a binary mixture of perfect gases are taken as the flow-governing equations. This coupled set of differential equations, written in terms of the Lam-Crocco variables, has been solved by a line-relaxation finite-difference technique. The results presented include the Stanton number and the local skin-friction coefficient as functions of shock Mach number and the nondimensional distance-time variable. The results indicate that more than 95 percent of the test-gas boundary layer exists over a length, measured from the leading edge of the plate, equal to about three-tenths of the distance traversed by the interface in the free stream.
