Book Synopsis Influence of Distribution System Infrastructure on Bacterial Regrowth by : Jonathan Clement
Download or read book Influence of Distribution System Infrastructure on Bacterial Regrowth written by Jonathan Clement and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has shown that higher levels of carbon supported greater biofilm growth and planktonic populations on the materials that were tested, although the effect was most pronounced on iron pipe. Utilities with significant amounts of iron pipe in their distribution systems may be faced with the greatest regrowth potential. For utilities that also distribute water that is high in natural carbon, this problem may be compounded. Therefore, reducing the organic carbon in the finished water may be effective for any utility wishing to reduce regrowth problems in their distribution system. Other alternatives for utilities wishing to reduce biofilms in the distribution system can include any or all of the following: replacing or relining iron pipe in the system, increasing disinfectant, and implementing effective corrosion control. Book Synopsis Drinking Water Distribution Systems by : National Research Council
Download or read book Drinking Water Distribution Systems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting and maintaining water distributions systems is crucial to ensuring high quality drinking water. Distribution systems-consisting of pipes, pumps, valves, storage tanks, reservoirs, meters, fittings, and other hydraulic appurtenances-carry drinking water from a centralized treatment plant or well supplies to consumers' taps. Spanning almost 1 million miles in the United States, distribution systems represent the vast majority of physical infrastructure for water supplies, and thus constitute the primary management challenge from both an operational and public health standpoint. Recent data on waterborne disease outbreaks suggest that distribution systems remain a source of contamination that has yet to be fully addressed. This report evaluates approaches for risk characterization and recent data, and it identifies a variety of strategies that could be considered to reduce the risks posed by water-quality deteriorating events in distribution systems. Particular attention is given to backflow events via cross connections, the potential for contamination of the distribution system during construction and repair activities, maintenance of storage facilities, and the role of premise plumbing in public health risk. The report also identifies advances in detection, monitoring and modeling, analytical methods, and research and development opportunities that will enable the water supply industry to further reduce risks associated with drinking water distribution systems.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Water Distribution Networks by : Pramod R. Bhave
Download or read book Analysis of Water Distribution Networks written by Pramod R. Bhave and published by Alpha Science Int'l Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of a Water Distribution Network may be necessary to know its behaviour under normal and deficient conditions and the design of a new network. Various methods such as Hardy Cross, Newton-Raphson, Linear Theory, and Gradient for static and time-dependent (extended period) analyses are described with small illustrative examples. The book also covers analysis considering withdrawal along links, head-dependent and performance-based analyses, calibration of existing networks, water quality modeling, analysis considering uncertainty of parameters, and reliability analysis of water distribution networks. Brief description of available computer softwares is also given.
Book Synopsis Privatization of Water Services in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Privatization of Water Services in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-20 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the quest to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of water and wastewater services, many communities in the United States are exploring the potential advantages of privatization of those services. Unlike other utility services, local governments have generally assumed responsibility for providing water services. Privatization of such services can include the outright sale of system assets, or various forms of public-private partnershipsâ€"from the simple provision of supplies and services, to private design construction and operation of treatment plants and distribution systems. Many factors are contributing to the growing interest in the privatization of water services. Higher operating costs, more stringent federal water quality and waste effluent standards, greater customer demands for quality and reliability, and an aging water delivery and wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure are all challenging municipalities that may be short of funds or technical capabilities. For municipalities with limited capacities to meet these challenges, privatization can be a viable alternative. Privatization of Water Services evaluates the fiscal and policy implications of privatization, scenarios in which privatization works best, and the efficiencies that may be gained by contracting with private water utilities.

Book Synopsis Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply by : National Research Council
Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-17 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book Synopsis Waterborne Gastrointestinal Disease Outbreak Detection by :
Download or read book Waterborne Gastrointestinal Disease Outbreak Detection written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance to water utilities and public health agencies, showing how to set up locally responsive water surveillance programs. It examines two major settings which surveillance must address and their appropriate responses: variations occurring in plant operation or distribution systems, and the detection of disease in the community. A proactive approach is described, involving watershed monitoring, record maintenance, and planning for emergencies. Material on public health recommends augmenting laboratory-based notifiable disease surveillance and creating or improving an emergency room-based sentinel system. A communications and action plan in case of outbreak is outlined. Emde is affiliated with the Northern Alberta Provincial Laboratory of Public Health, Canada. This work lacks a subject index. c.
